DF Gameplay Questions / can't get alerts and burrows to work

i followed the guide. this is what i can do:

designate burrow area
add people to the burrow
added the burrow to the alert screen
turned the alert on so that my dwarves all go to the designated area

and then I'm stuck, as the dwarves won't leave the alert area even after i set it back to inactive

help please

no thread nor buckets are getting stored in the hospital coffer, and when i press enter on the coffer after pressing (k) nothing happens, though it does now say that i have 1 crutch 2 splints and 4000 cloth(is this a bug?)

I made a stockpile in my hospital zone just for splints and crutches, but it shrunk my hospital zone to not include the stock pile(or at least it still shows 0 splints and 0 crutches)

hmm...maybe ill make an arena type thing and put like 5 wolves and a troll and unlock their cages and see who wins lol

how do i build the cage with the troll/other undesirables in a certain area? when i go to build a cage it just has the different types of cages and doesn't say anything about the contents of the cage

I've got a lot of trapped animals(wolves, sasquatch, gurlocks, moles, rats and a troll) and I want to get rid of them. every time i try moving them to a trader they break out until they are recaptured in cage traps as i do not yet have a military. if someone could help id appreciate it

ok so i got my dwarves to stand guard at a spot, but unfortunatly they are starving and thirsty...will they not take breaks for food/ale?

I guess I can't figure out how to make my squad active. I give a move command and tell them to stand there but they don't follow it

I've got a dwarf posessed and I want to set up a guard around him for when he goes beserk. So I tried to make a squad, which I think i succeeded in doing. but now I can't figure out how to make the squad stand guard near where this dwarf is sitting. as far as I can tell nothing that they do in their daily schedule has changed. thanks in advance
