For those players who don't see anything wrong with sleeping their way to the top, prostitution can offer a source of income and, oddly enough, popularity with the NPCs that are their "clients".

[NOTE: worldgen recipe won't work without editing dwarves to use CITY as their default site]
Being trapped on a laptop from 2008 tempers everything I do, so, with that in mind..

Here's my most recent (yet always-pocket-island-sized) worldgen setup:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The main changes:
*no site cap (but balanced by 'total civ pop 27')
*reduced cave depth
*messed with cavern layer openness (but not sure if desired effect was achieved)
*4 complete-edge oceans
*no night trolls/bogeymen/megabeasts/semi-megas (the main sources of conflict will be necromancers and kobolds/gobbos)
*enhanced good/evil square count
*lastly, outside of these settings I also make all civs default site type to 'CITY' and turn off most aquifer tags :> Which leads to the next one..
*NO mountain peak, since dwarves can embark anywhere via city due to my changes ;) Sooo ye, this setup probably wouldn't work for fort-maps :o

High elevation rejection, lack of rivers, lack of mountain caves, but after those it gens some nice fragmented island maps :) Leads to a civilization-based world (usually with a good-sized chunk of evil and necromancers) that is CPU friendly and with no stanky mountain range to complicate travel :>

I keep hoping Toady will devote a dev cycle to adding more raw "dwarflyness" to the game, like the ability to make use of venoms/ichors/syndrome-liquids, an overhaul of siege weaponry (including the ability to fire new things out of the catapult, like living creatures and barrels of venom), the ability for blood to pool and flow, some integration of divine metals into adv mode, interaction between fire/smoke/grass/trees/people (like how campfires/grass fires won't burn anything and the smoke has no negative effect)..

Really, I think Toady values the emergence of it all over making it more "gamey" (and therefore more satisfying as an "RPG"..). Also, we've been given some unprecedented depth in adventure mode now and it'll only leave us wanting more.. For instance, each sentient being has feelings and such, but there is no over-arching consequence (like a town full of happy, healthy citizens can be ruled over by a disgusting creature posing as a god with no ill effects..)..

If I were Toady (and assuming he doesn't want Dwarf Fort being "gamey"), I'd "play it safe" and keep the potentially gamey stuff "dwarfly" :> Can't go wrong with firing elf corpses over the wall (and into an army of elves) to damage morale, to make a moat full of carefully harvested paralyzing venom, to raze a (wooden!) village to the ground in adv mode (or to bash it down with picks and warhammers, if its stone)..

Just my dingy two cents, anyway ;)

Fun with arena mode (its Choose Your Own Adventuremode)! :> Made a Grandmaster swordsman in full steel armor to take down the dragon.. he didn't make it..

All the 'm's in the screenshot are spider monkey corpses from a free-for-all bar fight where all monkeys were equipped with iron knives :D

Minor contribution, but I had my starting dwarves (all!) hauling stone and noticed one was moving at nearly 2x the speed of the others.. and on examination that single dwarf was the most muscular one of the seven :) Pretty powerful difference!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: 0.42 Most Difficult World to Generate?
« on: February 01, 2016, 06:53:56 pm »
No expert at all, but it might be a "living space" issue.. Seems like each semi/megabeast requires its own cave or underground region to live in, so if you're genning a small world (with a standard amount of caves) that could be an issue..

I just genned a fresh world and embarked.. and there are two rope reed fiber buildings here :O They're complete except for doors and indoor floor tiles, but they have roofs.. I saw something in mantis about cloth walls genning (usually at the edges of maps) and causing problems, but these two buildings aren't trouble.. Thought it'd mention it, in case any mantis-people see it ;)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Miner standing on SMOKE

Gonna steal this thread to mention.. :) I recently embarked on a volcano near the ocean and grabbed a group of dwarves with the intention of running lava into the ocean.. All that went well, but before the flow reached the ocean I pastured all my yaks in front of it (for fun!), and one of the yaks somehow managed to stand around in the lava.. He smoked rabidly, but he didn't die for a very long time (pretty sure he was in 4/7 by the time he died..)..

All the other yaks died quick enough, though none of them ever showed any melting or burning damages on their description readouts (even while pausing the game and moving a single turn ahead and re-checking for damage).. Also, of the ones that died quick, a few of the corpses hung out for quite a while without ever burning..

If some kind Mantis-using soul would report it, I'd appreciate it :) At least Toady and Co. would have fun testing this one, heh :D

Yeah.. I'm desperately hoping that a (soon!) dev cycle will be dedicated to !!FUN!!.. Poetry, dancing, scholarly deeds.. All amazing gameplay elements, but not very dwarfy, and not very good harbingers of flaming, toxin-soaked, jaw-gnashing FUN..

I'd like to see more weather (like earthquakes or sinkholes or meteor impacts, and the much-loved yet long-lost flooding mechanic), more forgotten beast skills, swarms of 50+ migrating animals, more depth to the science we all enjoy performing so much..

At this point the temple, the library, the mead halls, in the end, as far as Armok and FUN are concerned, will just be a new room type the same old forgotten beasts will murder dwarves in.. To me "The forgotten beast killed them all while they were at the temple!" or "The beast killed them while they were in the middle of a dance!" is just the same as "The beast killed them all!"..

Another thing to keep in mind is that any overly cruel new mechanics could be on/off toggle-able during worldgen, so you could still get the relatively peaceful worlds we have now, if desired.. Also, on mods, they're fantastic, but!! Sir Toady is a truly unique individual, and even though the potential of modding is endless, the way Toady approaches things is one of a kind.. Certain gameplay elements would only "feel right" if they came straight from The Toad :)

I'd trade all the new features gladly for something like a research facility (complete with all the woes and wonders that real science conjures), or a deep Dwarven Sacrifice mechanic, or some official control over the stance/mindset of our dwarven empires.. or gunpowder..

For Steam refunds, I think the "rules" are: you can refund a game as long as you've not played more than 2 hours, and have bought the game in the last 14 days.. For a game pulled from Steam there might be exceptions, but I'm not sure (doubt it, even..).. I did refund a game, so be warned that you'll probably have to wait most of 7 business days before receiving your refund..

Another exploit is.. (don't look! Once you know you can't un-know!) ;)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

But yeah, I love me some CataDDA :| I'm thinking, as the game progresses, we'll be able to totally remove zombies and insert any enemies we want.. In the end it'll be a World Simulator, and modders will be able to make it into vastly different things..

Strip out all the buildings and start on a Caveman mod..
Strip out all the supernatural stuff and add in a realistic police system and create that "controversial" serial killer rogue (or flip it around and play as the cop/detective)
With enhanced illness transmission it could be a viral outbreak sim, modern-day vampire sim
Dino mod is already there for fun
Strip out all NPCs and zombies and just have fun in an empty Langoliers-style world (you can already do this)
With the current in-game digging mechanics it might end up possible to recreate SimAnt :O

You can already rid the world of living humans and zombies, and lower the city size down so that "civilization" is barely represented.. Add in the ability to play as non-human characters and the potential goes up by magnitudes.. Just surviving the cataclysm as a dog would be an amazing ride all by itself!

The possibilities are too much!! :| My favorite playthroughs so far have been when I (cheat)spawn myself a folding bicycle and a military rucksack and just bike :> Never settle down or set up a base, only stop for sleep or gathering, and just cover ground on the ol' bicycle :)

Other Games / Re: Terraria - 1.2 now out!
« on: June 25, 2015, 10:43:18 pm »
Was trying to hold off til the next update, but.. I can't! Must shove more things in more boxes!!

932 hours logged by Steam, probably 300-500 more offline :| I've got problems.. :>

Seriously, though, I've still got lots of stuff to do on Terraria, without 1.3 :| Many megaprojects unfinished, plenty of the rarer equipment still unowned, and about 25% landmass left to go on the largest sized world that I'm mining everything out of :>

1.3, especially "expert mode", is going to be absolutely insane :| Also, if they add in white Christmas trees, or purple garland/X-mas lights/decorations then my suggestion made it through (again!) :> I was the guy who suggested (and received!) the ability to name your storage chests :D  Or I think I was, anyway..

Heh, my monthly cap is 10gb and then we get throttled to "dial-up" levels (that're less reliable than any dial-up I ever had..) THE FUTURE!

inb4 the "Ugh, they dumbed down Fallout 4!" Skyrim vs Old Elder Scrolls arguments ;) We'll see about this, since they did add the ammo crafting element to New Vegas, which actually added more things to the game (and may have confused some people, even!) ;)

Lastly, all this talk is totally useless to me because it'll be another year or two before I purchase my first (used) next-gen console :> Bought my 1st PS3 for 150 bucks used and am still playing it today :> I also paid no more than 20 bucks each for all the "heavy hitter" games (excluding GTA V and Dark Souls 1 + 2, which I gladly pre-ordered..) Just bought my brother a copy of 360 New Vegas from the local GameStop for 3 dollars :> I'd like to be financially cool enough to buy all this stuff fresh at new-price but it isn't in the cards :D As a side-effect, though, the games are nice and  patched (or as patched as they'll ever be) once I get them, and the consoles have had some time in the market to show off all their worst/most glaring problems..

All that useless stuff said, hell yeah I'm hyped for Fallout 4 :D Hopefully the non-VATS gunplay will be a lot more "grounded" and usable in this one :>

Forgot to mention that there's a demo on Steam, for any interested, but you may experience main menu lag.. The lag has already been fixed in the indev version currently, but the demo still suffers from it..

For honesty, and clarity, currently the enemy types and weaponry types are a bit thin (though the random-gen attributes do provide a pretty rich variety).. which is why I relate it to 3089.. But its indev, and the dev seems pretty proud of his work, so here's hoping that it'll grow richer :)

But for weaponry you've got 6 or 7 slots you can equip stuff in (RAM serves as a unusable stat/skill item similar to armor, separate slots for running equipment and for jumping equipment.. and then 6 or 7 slots you can equip with whatever you want.. One weapon and lots of RAM cards, or no RAM cards and 7 10-projectile shotguns that you can fire off 70 bullets per barrage simultaneously :O With the "FIRE ALL BARRELS AT ONCE!" it steps a bit farther than Borderlands, but overall I'm hoping for more variety in weapon types (which the dev has stated are definitely in the works, along with more enemy types..)..

I've also suggested that multi-shot/barrage homing missiles would be a welcome addition :> But the dev responded with "Try finding a "drunken" prefix rocket-launching shotgun and see if that's what you're after :)".. I haven't even seen a "drunken" weapon yet, but I'm intrigued :>

One other thing to mention is the "hacking" aspect, and how it isn't really present in-game.. Each building/tower/server has a "danger level" and when you poke that tower with your icebreaker it creates a radius around the tower that you have to stay inside of during the fight.. and then the tower starts puking out enemies.. kill the enemies and you've "hacked" the tower.. I don't mind, because I'm not sure how to make it more "hacky" without relying on some kind of mini-game-esque element, and I love 1st-person twitch-blasting enemies anyway..

Another saddening thing I read was that the dev has to pay an "outside source" for (Unity-based) graphics assets for the game, so he can't really run wild with ideas/suggestions that require graphical representation :( That's the kind of thing I feel like a healthy, dedicated community would create for free, just for the honor of adding to an already good game..

Okay! There's some negatives to balance my original post ;)

Other Games / Black Ice (on Steam)

Trying to help this game gain some fame!

Recently discovered the game Black Ice on Steam and it scratches all the same itches that 3089 does (for me, at least!) :) The Steam page covers the game pretty well, so I won't go into that here (don't have much time at the moment!).. The dev is friendly and always willing to chat with fans/customers, and when I see that I always feel like doing a bit of free advertising :D

So! Check it out, give it a glance, see if what you see hooks you in.. Its an Early Access game but the dev plans on supporting it after final release too..
