DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Flat map
« on: June 26, 2009, 02:19:48 pm »
The site i'm currently using is a mostly-flat marsh with several pools which I will in time drain and fill. And then build floors over. About the biggest problem I am encountering is goblins, as I lack steel and iron has more important uses in this fort.

I have a map that ~might~ work - it's 6x6, and the top 2 rows are level, with 1+ more of the next (and several lower on the same.)  About 8 of the rest are +1, and the last are +/-1 from those.  (Almost too flat for me, but might not be enough for you.)

It has a lot going for it. A half dozen savage-good biomes, long brook, magma pipe off-center, long central UG river, gobbos, HFS.  Mostly obsidian, with 4 area blocks of sand across the north edge.  Steel heaven - 3 magnetite pockets found (so far) plus many veins of hematite, plus 3 levels of flux. Lots of bauxite, & even has garnierite (for nickel, for those who've never encountered it in person.)

Only "downsides" are minor - it's a desert, so few trees, but block-wide TC farms are easy in any of the 6 soil blocks.  One very quiet (so far) Giant Eagle, a short sealed chasm mid-map and very little other interesting wildlife so far.  Vanilla 40d w/ cat mod.
That sounds very interesting, especially if it can be recreated on vanilla DF d11. Trees are only good to me as a source of fuel - which I don't need, with magma.

But this map doesn't have magma, and thus, no obsidian. Oh well. Tantrum spiral ensued, so i've gone for a nearby, but still similar site. This one with magma (the site finder chose me a site 3 tiles away from a magma pool, hah)

We also came across another problem. I neglected to notice it was a terrifying biome. With an aquifer. Now I need stone for the megaproject, dorfs are unhappy due to dead miners, and I can't engrave to cheer them up. This'll be the shortest megaproject ever. So any advice for getting through the aquifer? Never dealt with one before.

Hey, would you be able to upload that map?  :D  I've been looking for the same thing!
Sure, I can upload the map and site easily enough. The only issue with the site is no magma I can find and a lack of flux stone.

That Morul is beating the Captain is, at the same time, very very wrong and oh so right.

Site found, spread over 3 z-levels but all sand so easy digging. Will get started now
EDIT - And forgot rule number 1 of undermining several tonnes of sand - do so from a safe distance. Miner dead.

Are swamps low drainage areas or high?

For flat places you may want to try a glacier, but both magma and wood be scarce there, on the bright side you can make EVERYTHING out of water.
Can't make metal out of water.
...oh gods am I going to be proved wrong on this?

I'm looking to try out an idea for a megaproject I had. To do it right requires a map with either magma or lots of wood, and also needs to be FLAT. I mean very flat. I can "flatten" it myself, but some of the more stringent requirements of the megaproject and the sheer time-consuming nature of such a task make it difficult. So I need a very flat map. One whose ground surface doesn't vary too much (over 2-3 z levels is best) and with either lots of wood or magma. Surface river alright, underground perfect. Gobbos and orcs if possible good for the associated Fun. I've tried random genning, but I can't really think of a way to find such a spot.

Man, now I really want the history seeds.

The Bronze Gates is the dwarven civilization I was talking about. These parameters in vanilla DF.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I can't seem to get these working...any advice?

? - well, you can still build them.

If you can't dig a channel, then you build the equivalent one level up - needs a floor and 2 walls to hold the fluid in.  A top is optional. (How hard can it be?)
A TOP IS NOT OPTIONAL. DEFINITELY NOT OPTIONAL.

From Mayday, or did you put it in? Because Mayday has updated to the .40d11, (I think), which is different from .40d, from the perspective of reveal, and the other utilities.
I cannot get reveal to work under .40d11, but can under d10

When my ultra-strong drowning trap of drowning hit a small flaw.
There were 3 levers, one to block access to my fort, one to seal the enemy in and one to unleash the water.

Guess who accidently pulled the wrong lever (I sealed them in) and then forgot about it until 30 dorfs were dead?

Direct square relationship to how far away it is and how long it needs to be.
