DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How do end a fort

Basically do all of the above and at least one should work.

Busy chefs tend to get Legendary pretty quickly and start cranking out Masterpiece meals, especially if they're the gourmet kind.

DF General Discussion / Re: A Scholarly Dwarf Fortress?
« on: November 17, 2009, 02:40:25 am »
I really think Dwarf Fortress deserves to be called a work of art. It's being made by a lone man who's determined to make exactly what he wants to make without outside interference (though accepting suggestions), it has subject matter and detail unlike any other game in the world (there's some similar but nothing truly close), and isn't made with any consideration for profit or widespread appeal, it's something that the player has to make an effort to understand, and what they get out of it depends on what they put into it. (not necessarily a good or bad thing)

At the very least, there's nothing else like it. That alone makes it worth study.

I'm pretty well prepared for sieges so most of the death and mutilation tends to happen to any slow civvies. I've got a blind butcher who's the fortress invalid.

You people are sick.

Now if you'll excuse me I'm trying to figure out how to get my entire fortress killed.

Ugh, the fort where I can't find any gold at all and my dungeon master loves electrum, and the duchess demands platinum. At least when I finally got it the dungeon master built his own armour stand himself and that was kinda cool.

I hope next version brings us more stuff worth trading for. Or just nerf the price of crafts so I can actually sell stuff.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: 8-year-old kid playing DF
« on: November 09, 2009, 08:34:13 am »
If this thread's still on topic, you'd be surprised what an 8-year-old is capable of.

She'll probably need a lot of help, but with practice and a lot of experimentation she'll probably get the hang of it.

And when I was 8 I was much more foul-mouthed and loved blood and guts so I really don't think DF will tramatise her. It's not that violent.

I don't think censorship would be enforceable at all, given that DF is a freeware game from the US.

And Australia has problems with apathy, most people don't give a damn about the government and there's not quite enough activist gamers to make a difference yet. Most of the country doesn't even seem to know about the planned internet filter, but everyone who knows about it is against it.

sewerage?
Corpes maybe, DF doesn't have real "sewerage" ...yet.
Dear Armok, when this finally gets implemented there will no doubt be utter hilarity.

Loki also mothered Sleipnir, the eight-legged horse.

That's right, mothered.

As soon as I found out the King would be an elf, I began constructing various selfdestruct devices.

This fort's going out in a blaze of glory. And magma.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: My First Self Destruct Mechanism

Actually, given that I've got some decent artifacts and gear, I might leave the fort just devastated enough to be beyond salvage but enough to be fun to explore. The place will be a maze of mining tunnels and poor planning with magma traps around every corner. The earthquake machine idea is nice, but it might not work given the fort's kinda built around the magma funnel.

I've got some goblin prisoners lying around, I might put them in key locations and watch the fun. I think I'll wait til the King arrives to kill everything though, and even then I'll build a magmaduct directly to his location.

DF Suggestions / Re: Musical Instruments and other sounds

It would be beyond awesome if dwarves could have visible dance moves.

Of those instruments you listed, I have to wonder- which ones would be made out of what materials?

I imagine stone would probably only be good for the existing ones, piccolos and other wind instruments. Most string instruments, drums and also woodwinds could be made out of wood, I imagine. While trumpets, cymbals, triangles and similar would have to be forged out of metal. Things like bagpipes would need leather or cloth, too.

DF Gameplay Questions / My First Self Destruct Mechanism
« on: November 05, 2009, 02:38:25 am »
Okay, I've started to tire of my first successful fortress, and the King I'm working for happens to be an elf so I figure rather than deal with the shame I'll prepare for a glorious death of magma and madness sometime down the line.

So, I've got a magma pipe and I'm pretty good at working with it, but how would I go about making sure I can cause sufficient flooding to kill as much stuff as dwarvenly possible after pulling one lever? I've got no natural bauxite on the map so I'm gonna have to go easy on the floodgates, and I assume the most efficent route would be to create magma reservoirs near where I want it to flow, to make sure it gets going as quickly as possibly.

Other things I could take advantage of include a caged Fire Imp and a lot of Fire Snakes (well placed cage traps work wonders), I want to leave as much glorious destruction as possible.

DF Suggestions / Musical Instruments and other sounds
« on: November 05, 2009, 12:16:19 am »
I couldn't find a recent thread on the topic, so I'll share my recent ideas;

Now, last I remember I think we can build musical instruments but they're just trade goods like the rest, but I don't think it would be too hard (I could very well be wrong) to implement a system where musically inclined dwarves perform in public places (and hopefully practice in private) with the instrument of their choice, which gives a happy thought to any dwarves that are listening. If a dwarf particularly likes the instrument or the song, they might even give the performer a coin or two, so we don't have starving artists but buskers (and maybe nobles could pay them for private performances, or to follow them around mariachi-style).

Another music related idea I had- I want to forge and ring a great big bell. Probably using metal (brass in particular), we could order a large bell to be forged, and to use it requires it to be constructed like a building. Ringing the bell could work like a regular performance, maybe not using the skill of the dwarf but mostly the quality of the construction, and the bell could maybe also be set up to ring when a lever is pulled, maybe to alert the dwarves when things are happening (as opposed to automatically knowing what's going on as they do now I guess), or just so you can set up Norte Dorf. Note that a gong could probably serve the same function as a bell. The bell/gong may be rung whenever a noble arrives (or says so), a child is born, etc.

Apart from that, what instruments might be possible to build in DF's setting, and where would they be crafted? I can imagine drums and horns would be the easiest to make with wood or bone (and metal drums aren't out of the question), while string instruments might require wood, and trumpets and the like needing metal.
