DF General Discussion / Re: Future of the Fortress

The question about writing being used in engravings made me wonder, will we also see graffiti on walls of towns and ruins, like the drawings found on walls in Pompeii? If so, might it also be possible for adventurers to make their own graffiti?

That's not to say folks with autism can't be geniuses. I happen to be autistic, you know. :P

Really though, I wish people wouldn't use autism as a prejorative. It's hard enough living in a non-autistic world without people assuming you're Rain Man.

...unless I completely mistook the meaning of this discussion, which is a reasonable assumtion to make when dealing with an autistic. :P

On a less defensive note, I love the art in this thread. There's some real talent here.

If you donate, Toady sends you an e-mail asking what kind of reward you want. All you need to do is reply to that e-mail.

Edit: You also get a separate e-mail from paypal confirming your donation. Toady's e-mail usually comes a day or two later. Might take a bit longer when he's in a busy period like now.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: January 30, 2012, 11:13:03 am »
Probably as a result of a forgotten beast spraying its bodily fluids all over the fort, my dorfs are all getting sick, and now there's a bit of a vomit spill going on, growing bigger and bigger and covering /everything/.

Is this what they mean by 'going green'?

DF General Discussion / Re: Your First Time (playing DF)
« on: January 23, 2012, 04:47:33 am »
The first time I tried DF, I gave up after a few minutes. I'd seen the wiki, but there seemed to be way too many things I'd need to learn before I could even start to play. I figured the game couldn't possibly be fun enough to justify all that effort.

A few months later, after reading some more awesome DF stories, I decided to give it another try. This time I used the tutorial that was on the wiki front page back then (early 40d era, I think). Things went much better this time around.

I managed to dig a nice little fort into a hillside, set up some farms and industries, and then decided to check out the river. At this point, I hadn't quite figured out that the world had multiple Z-levels. And that's the story of how my first fort was flooded and all my dorfs died.

I'd also love to hear a thing or two about Toady's plans for goverments and justice systems, both in Fortress mode and in adventure mode. Will we ever be able to write our own laws in fortress mode, punishing litterers by throwing them down the Tower of Death? Will our mayor and nobles ever perform an actual role in governing the fort? Will our adventurer ever be fined for wearing purple on the King's birthday?

Edit: Oh, and maybe something about quests and narrative in adventure mode? Will we see other kinds of quests in the future, like 'go to ruin X and find artifact Y', or 'rescue the king's pet fluffy wambler from the clutches of the evil dragon'? Will there be multi-part quests or overarching plots? Will we see engravings about quests?

I'd like to hear some more about the future of cooking, farming and brewing. There are some pretty interesting ideas in the Cooking and Brewing Diversity thread in the Suggestions forum, and I was wondering what Toady's thoughts on the matter are.

Another, maybe smaller subject I'd like to hear more about is crafts. Will dorfs ever wear the amulets and rings and so on that they make? Will there ever be particular pieces of jewelry associated with a particular position, like a particular crown worn by the king of a dwarven kingdom, or an amulet worn by the sheriff of a fort? Could an adventurer steal the king's crown, and will people who have never seen the king in person think he is the king because he wears that particular crown?

Hurray, update! =D

My first adventure wasn't very long. I was sent to kill a human lasher. The human lasher lashed my brain in with his copper whip.

Next adventurer! =D

Oh, I hadn't even thought of the HFS. I agree that there should be no warning when you're about to breach the funhouse.
