I cannot seem to get this working on Archlinux 64bit. The game window just appears then disappears. Terminal feedback doesn't really tell me anything either.

Code: [Select]
[glen@arch df_linux-phoebus]$ ./dfhack

It seems really buggy at the moment. Very laggy at the start, random crashes especially when resizing the window etc

Ah okay. Would it be possible to do a version with a lightweight DE? not sure what graphics library's DT requires and if it would still be feasible on a Usb stick.

More features do not have to mean breaking the game.

For example the current feature set can already be made much more manageable using 3rd party tools, dfhack and user GUI plugins literally transform the game without changing the core mechanics. Thus development towards how the user interfaces with the game can allow for many new features without additional manageability issues (beyond what we have currently with the vanilla game).

In terms of the argument regarding purists. I personally do not see their point. they are considering the user interface as part of the difficulty of the game. This should not be the case, the difficulty of the game are in it's mechanics, not its interface. These are short comings unfortunately as a consequence of a single person dev team.

Seems like a nice idea.

What environment is running? Such as LXDE etc and thus could it come with essentials like Dwarf Therapist?

To late for me in the UK (00:30). Have fun though.

A thought for people:

While I was thinking about fuel, I realized there is something big missing in Dwarf Fortress' food economy - cooking requires no fuel!  Adding fuel use to cooking (heck, it is the largest fuel usage of pre-modern societies) might do alot to bring the cost of food production into line with the dwarf bucks you can get trading food to caravans.

Try having a side entrance also, only 1 wide and very long, traps on every tile and restrained animals if possible. That way your dwarfs will still have an entrance but early Invaders will give up.

Did you get the latest version of dwarf therapist working by splinterz?

How does underground farming work. I read the manual but crops never grow :| Do they need constant irrigation now?

Latest version works fine on ubuntu Linux with a few tweaks. Current working directory needs to be the root folder and launched as super user (sudo). Compiled from source.
