Tholtig is exactly the one I was looking for, thank you.

I've had some trouble using the search function to find this tale, because I don't remember it well enough to wrangle through the results.

A long time ago someone told a story about something they saw in legends mode, about one old battleax of a female dwarf who led countless battles and singlehandedly saved her tiny empire from ruin again and again, at least that's how I remember it. I may be embellishing details here, but if memory serves she dropped dead of old age during her last duel, and her empire was crushed soon after she fell.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Military Frustrations
« on: July 29, 2011, 05:06:58 pm »
So I start an embark missing a few things, like dogs and cats. No big deal, I'll just survive without.

I'm not even finished building my farm when I realize that 1) my pack animals are Yaks 2) they need to eat, all of a sudden.

So I set them out to pasture, and before they're even in the pasture a skeletal mountain goat starts harassing. I set the woodcutter to military to go take them down (since he was out there pasturing the aforementioned Yaks). . . and he goes and puts his axe away before coming back out to take on the goat barehanded, who has since given up and wandered off, so I cancel him as a military commander. He then goes off to fetch equipment, only to be interrupted constantly by skeletal hoary marmots. I have no idea what he was trying to get, but he was bound and determined to bounce off of those marmots until he got it ( it can't have been the axe since he had a clear run back into the fort). He also won't drop the military commander designation.

he's also getting thirsty, and I've already lost such enthusiasm for the venture that rather than help him out or watch him die, I just abandon the fort and call it a day.

I can't stand dealing with the military most of the time.

Is there some technique to streamlining the whole process?

I can mostly confirm that. I have a sample of several hundred doses of mutation potion, and not once have I ever gotten saprovore.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: January 18, 2011, 03:17:41 pm »
Bored.

Maybe it's because I don't make mistakes anymore, or those that I do are so catastrophically simple they suck all the joy out of the ensuing carnage. (top two causes of fortress crumbling in my games: not able to patch caverns fast enough to avoid an onslaught, ambush getting through my defenses before I locate them)

My farming is immaculate, I am never short of supplies that exist, the majority of my forts end up being stone haulers as I hew a massive labyrinth out of the rock, my military is well trained and adequately armed, though rarely enough to take down the Forgotten Beasts that have claimed the largest share of my forts.

Most of my forts are abandoned because there's nothing to do, and I get bored halfway through and large projects and decide to do something else.

*shrug*

So what's happening is nothing in particular.

Ah, whoops. I seemed to remember it being done the hard way, but then, my experience mostly comes from 5.1

I did have fun in the swamps though: set some trees on fire. Lucky me, I can barely be touched by steam even though I have no particular resistance to it.

I wish.

Mainly, it doesn't count because "alive" just means "dude heartbeat and everything, tell me I am not alive. Hear that blood sloshing around? Totally the heart." The vampire isn't actually alive, just passing for it.

Edit: found my answers

Edit: But not before someone replied. >.<

Yeah, all undead are absolutely fixed, and just rot. This isn't an issue for Ghouls and Vampires, but Mummies can get into deep shit doing that.

Also, Deep Dwarf magic mapping happens anyway, like the Demonspawn. I also thought there were layers of Saprovore, because Ghouls seem to be way more psyched by it than Kobolds. Kenku do get flight and such, but I think most of their stuff is already maxed.

Hm. The only ones I can think of where that's an improvement are:
Demonspawn (always better, I think the closest they have to a "negative" mutation is +1 -1 stuff)
Kobolds (Saprovore 1 -> 2 -X> 3)
Ogre (Saprovore ; tough skin)
Minotaur (Horns 3)

There's probably some I'm missing, but most of them are on the cusp of misfortune from that.

Earth Magic doesn't totally cut you off from the high-power spells, there's the crystal spear for lategame single target kills, Shatter for anyone who doesn't fly, and it also features Bolt of Magma which enables easy Fire crosstraining.

That said, looking at the table of spells, I note two things: Earth doesn't have many spells, and several of them have been cut on top of that, and Divination seems nearly redundant as a school of magic.

@celem: A few tips: Running /down/ isn't necessarily a good idea, as the power of enemies increases drastically at the start. It can be a better idea to flee up to a cleared floor and strand a tough enemy there until you can take them down later. (Enemies who could theoretically use stairs (not skeletons) who are adjacent to you will follow you up or down stairs, which of course leaves the question of /how/ you'll extricate yourself from them if they're the same speed as you).

I do have a question about mutations: Do characters ever get mutations that affect the "mutations" of their species? Like spriggans becoming able to digest meat or trollish metabolisms slowing?

@Leafsnail: Earth elementalists actually have one escape spell in the starter book - passwall. It's more situational than most, but combine it with magic mapping and you're a god. It becomes something of a moot point with LRD, though.

Finding the morgue in the installed version was hell. I knew where it had to be, but because hidden files are somehow impossible to view (yes, I am the admin and I know how the settings work) on this Windoze machine, I have to somewhat know where to start. So, if anyone else finds themselves up a creek on locating this stuff, seek out C:\Docs & Sets\Relevant User\Application Data\crawl

Also, I'm playing stone soup, so I'm stuck with the nature of my earth elementalists. Ironically, I've found them to be my favorite class despite being "weak", but then my other top two are Mummy Necromancers (admittedly a powerful combination, if finding Necromutation redundant), and Kobold Summoners (whatever their potential is, it isn't many that get to live up to it).

And I kind of like the whole setup of Earth Elementalists with regards to transmutations (it also makes it easier for transmuters to branch into direct damage when Evaporate's power starts waning), in that they're not just pulling this crap out of thin air, they're using the environment (which you have to admit heavily favors the earth, being UNDERGROUND) to screw the foe over. LRD is one of my favorite spells, because it's part of a group along with Ozcobu's Refrigeration and the Somebody's Lesser Intoxication or whatever it is of spells that are intended for nonviolent purposes, but have been noted to be /really useful/ for ruining someone's day.

I also support Cherbyshev for the simple reason that it is more accurate to reality given our representation (there is no fixed X or Y to be moving diagonally to in real life, you know), and the point here is reality - but cooler.

Yeah, I've NEVER had problems with imps :o but Ice Beasts are fucking terrifying (sadly, never gotten a summoner strong enough to summon their own).

@Leafsnail: Yeah, I guess that's likely, but it's a serious problem as an earth elementalist, as the primary spell is anywhere from 1-3 squares, depending on luck (3 squares is with high vehumet piety and Stoneblast), and the nearest Long Range spell is Stone Bolt or whatever it's called, which is really short range for a long range spell, and I haven't found it terribly useful in my runs. I'm not sure what all to do about it.

I have at least learnt the lesson of roguelikes: stat boosts can actually accomplish something (as opposed to RPGs where they're a laughingstock). I don't think half my Earths would last anywhere near as long as they do without Stoneskin.

I did have one of them get up to like 17 AC with all of its gear. Still died, though. Think a yak got that one?

THAT DAMN SIGMUND

I would also like to note that I am somewhat annoyed with the loss of an easily purged morgue. I've got so many ghosts wandering around the early levels who do pretty extreme damage -.-

And I was doing so damned well too. Was up to my ears in gear, but got one-shot by a hill giant. - How did that happen? Was stoneblasting a squadron of orcs, and didn't think the burly looking fellow was going to be able to do that much more damage. Meh. I suppose my demonspawn's mutations sucked anyway (I had claws and ice resistance. Woo.).

I use diagonal movement just fine thank you, that's never stopped anyone who's the same speed from being able to keep up.

And yeah, Sandblast is a weird spell, but it's basically useless without turning it into Stoneblast. I've confirmed this using a Demonspawn Earth Elementalist, who got to be quite powerful (I found a use for the semi-random magic mapping mutation - Passwall testing), before being taken out by THAT DAMN SIGMUND (incidentally, while being chased by an Iguana). I couldn't kill anything with Sandblast if it wasn't possible for me kill it /without/ Sandblast. That is, the only ones my mage could kill using Sandblast instead of Stoneblast were the type of guys who'd fall against an unenchanted knife wielded by a mage.

And, the reason I end up killing everything:
Meet Ijyb on dlevel 2 - Orcs are, what, dlevel 3? If I can't take Ijyb, I have no chance of taking a squadron of 5 orcs backed by an orc priest and a pair of orc wizards. I have never had an experience where skipping a level to avoid a powerful enemy has paid off. Of course, I haven't gotten deep enough in the dungeon that the power differential between floors is negligible.

GRAH! Luck is so frustrating in the early levels. My first character in 7.1 (previously I'd played 5.1 exclusively) was a Kobold Earth Elementalist, due to the great fun of zooming in, shanking the enemy, and then sandblasting them into oblivion if they're still alive.

So this one died with 61 stones in her inventory.
Why?
Cursed sword.
The sword wasn't cursed when she equipped it, and she managed to play a hugely long dodging game with Ijyb (who I've discovered is basically impossible for this character build to touch without Stoneblast (Sandblast w/ Stones wielded)), escaping him no less than three times, twice due to scrolls of teleport and the third time by managing to lose him in the corridors, thanks to a wand of slow.

What killed her? An iguana, because it could hit for 3/4ths of her HP in one hit, was *slightly* faster I think (believe me, I expended the charges of that wand trying to lose this damned thing), and she'd used up her overt escape options on Ijyb. It was at this point I stopped having fun. I knew running was a losing strategy, and so I kept running the iguana in circles until I was at max power, and expended about half my mana on resisted or missed Sandblasts before being taken under.

It's this sort of thing which really bugs me.
