The best creepypastas should be somewhat believable, but totally unusual. Dwarf fortress has its share of horrors and excursions into uncanny valley. I'm leaning towards something creepy about an oddly behaving dwarf, with semi-plausible events and a terrifying conclusion.

hm, maybe I'll take a crack at this...

Oh, and here is a nice thing. Not a video, but a serie of article, each rebutting a common argument by the climate deniers. If you think global warming is an hoax for such and such reasons, check it against this list, I'm betting it's there somewhere, along with the rebuttal.

ARGH, THE CURIOSITY, IT BURNS ME IN THE HEAD. LINK PLEASE!

General Discussion / Re: An Essay on Male Suicide
« on: May 20, 2012, 12:21:41 pm »
IMO the biggest problem these changes have brought is that there really is no safe and successful way to court now. If a guy comes on a bit too strong he's a Neanderthal creep. And if you get this reputation in a small town, which doesn't take all that much, you may as well become a monk because you're dead to women.

I think it's better than we tell ourselves it is. Girls and guys are equally as awkward about their intentions and feelings, and attraction is so complicated that it would be self-defeating to just say that either you're a creep or weak. Part of transcending this is learning how to communicate with girls effectively, and it is difficult, but it comes with time and these sort of problems fade eventually.

Quote from: Kilroy the Grand
The thing is, society still treats women as if they are poor delicate little flowers, in need of constant protection.

...um, yeah, those are exactly the sort of gender roles that feminists want ended.

Quote from: Kilroy the Grand
Feminists want "equal" rights, they want the perks with none of the down sides.

Strawman. You have built an enemy in your mind, one that does not reflect reality.

Quote from: Kilroy the Grand
If a woman hits me, assaults me, want to know what society expects me to do? Take it like a man.

You keep citing the same youtube user: one with a clear agenda. "The Happy Misogynist"? That is hardly credible.

Quote from: Kilroy the Grand
Do you see any feminists saying women should have to sign up for the draft? No, you don't.

How is that the fault of feminism? The reason that females are exempt from the draft is because people believed that women were unfit to serve in the military. And besides, you're just plain wrong: The feminist National Organization for Women passed a resolution in 1980, stating: "We oppose any registration or draft that excludes women as an unconstitutional denial of rights to both young men and women". More and more it becomes clear that you have no idea what feminism really is.

Quote from: Kilroy the Grand
Yes, the idea that people can discriminate against males, or white people is completely absurd and never happens, I feel just ever so privileged.

Did I even use the world privilege once in my post?

Radical feminism being a specific category of feminist ideology; the militant branch who DO think all men are evil and are serious when they say they want genetic engineering to make men obsolete so that all men can be euthanised without the species dying)

This is a strawman, plain and simple. I suggest that people actually learn about REAL, credible feminism (not the conservative-spread stereotypes meant to support their social values). Here's a good start: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feminism

The idea of misandry is so absurd.
It's a little like "reverse racism". That somehow, the dominant group is being so cruelly oppressed and held back in society by some group attempting to achieve equal rights. It's such a self-serving concept, and shows a fundamental inability to see the context-- women have been pushed into subordinate roles for HUNDREDS OF YEARS, and there are still all sorts of attitudes that hurt them: look at Rush Limbaugh's 'slut' comments. There are problems with male sexual identity, but for some reason women are blamed, as if equal rights are something we have to divide like a pie.

Another thing: why are feminists blamed for male-identity issues? Male gender roles existed long before feminism did. The "anti-misandry" movement latches onto feminists as some sort of cultural bogeywoman, talking about them in hushed whispers without ever actually researching what feminism is or talking to one. Their irrational fear of the mythical "man hating feminist" gives much more insight into their own personal bias and insecurity than the real issues at hand.

PCP or LSD would, seriously, just reduce DF to a bunch of flashy lights with no particular meaning.

Showing DF to someone in that frame of mind would be like showing someone a book in a language with a totally different alphabet than the one they understand - they wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the raving confessions of a mass murdering cannibal from a recipe to bake a pie.

PCP, maybe. LSD, not quite.

You'd able to understand what you were seeing, but it would just mean something different to you. You might notice the colors as being infinitely beautiful, or the content of the game being more horrific than usual. The controls would definitely be confusing due to disorientation, and the rows/patterns would be hard to see because of the visual effects of LSD. The entire Dwarf Fortress window would probably melt and sway, and you might see faces in the ground tile arrangements.

You would see the visuals, but the conclusions you drew from those visuals combined with enhanced abstraction of thought would make you feel differently about dwarf fortress. You would still be able to understand it unless you had taken a much higher dose, when you would probably just become lost in your own mental world.

...I don't see a significantly above-average proportion of video-game-playing peace activists, so...

This is a good point, and I should add the disclaimer that this is all casual discussion, based nowhere in scientific fact or held to any sort of research standard. And of course videogames wouldn't be the sole cause of someone "opposing" violence. Culture and environment have a much greater sway over that. The question is whether video games or violent media could contribute towards that attitude, or reinforce it in some way. As in, "Yeah, blasting the demons of hell into gory bits is fun in DOOM, but if I had to do this in real life, I realize it would really suck,". So the exposure towards fictional violence would reduce the tendency to believe in the "glory" of actual battle.

General Discussion / Videogame-Induced Pacifism?
« on: April 12, 2012, 03:56:04 pm »
I grew up with video games. Most of my childhood and adolescence were spent stomping on or shooting a variety of virtual monsters. I immersed myself in the worlds of Mario, the lone wanderer, Gordon Freeman and Master Chief.

Once in a while, probably after watching me mow down counter terrorists in counterstrike, my parents would come to me and voice their concern for my sanity with the usual remarks:

"Now don't go thinking that shooting someone will solve anything,"
"Son, are you upset at something?"
"Why don't you go outside?"

Between their (reasonable) concern and the numerous news stories written about how violent media was destroying the moral fabric of America's youth, you'd think that the "gaming generation" would grow up and begin to bunny hop down the street, busting out a flamethrower after every disagreement.

We all already mostly agree that violent media doesn't make people violent, and this topic has been discussed to death probably everywhere on the internet. But another interesting question arises... has videogame violence generally made gamers more opposed to violence?

My videogame-playing friends have expressed similar feelings now that most of us have grown up into generally well-adjusted adults. Video games seem relatively existential, in that while you may become immersed in the action, you're still generally aware that you're playing a game and you will usually know that it isn't really that important. Does that perspective cross over into our perception of the real world?

The absurdity of violence in games like Postal and DOOM seems to have made real world violence look even more absurd. Violence seems to belong on a screen, and not in the real world at all. This may just be part of the maturing process, but it seems strange that a culture so obsessed with fictional violence would reject it in real world affairs.

I'm guessing most of us here enjoy violent videogames. I'm also guessing that most of us here also play dwarf fortress, maybe one of the most "violent" (as far as ASCII goes) games in existence. How do you feel about real world violence compared to media violence? Do you believe that videogames have affected your attitudes towards violence in general?

As a community, we've all forgotten the most fundamental part of adventure mode. We've been distracted by all the new, flashy towns and vampires, but exploring your old forts and plundering their treasures is still one of the most fun things to do.

Oilywilted was destroyed by a brutal goblin siege. The war party steamrolled over my defense and massacred my entire populace of 140 dwarves. I was pretty angry, because I loved Oilywilted. So I rolled up a dwarven adventurer and made it my goal to avenge the fort's demise by killing every one of the jerks that had defiled my glorious community.

After hiring a crack team of human soldiers, I made the long journey to Oilywilted across jungles, rivers, savannas, and multiple continents. I left a trail of justice in my wake, taking odd jobs killing bandits and vampires to build up fame and supplies.

Eventually, the party made it to Oilywilted, and it was (predictably) infested with goblins. My entire party was killed in the initial attack, and I sank into the shadows to avoid the goblins' arrows. I then began a guerrilla campaign of strangulation, arrow-chucking, and goblin stabbing until my eventual killing of the goblin war party leader, by crushing him under a drawbridge during a prolonged duel in which he severed my left foot. I grabbed a crutch and hobbled back to a human town, adored by its people, scarred, and wealthy beyond my wildest dreams. I had even picked up the corpse of my former mayor's pet goose and beat a few outlaws to death with it later as a victory celebration. I retired the adventurer, and his name was prominently displayed in legends mode.

Adventure mode is very satisfying when you manage to claw and scratch your way to fame and glory.

I really love the colors and font, but the dwarves should have beards!

Ironhand graphics + Truetype

I like it. Looks to be clean and clear.

A while back, I set out to design a "democratic" fortress, with wide hallways and aesthetically pleasing "council chambers" and "Public forums", where my citizens could exercise their freedom of speech and have a voice in the community's political discussion... or at least I could pretend that's what they were doing when "attending parties" in those places.

Anyway, things were going well until a goblin ambush squad brutally slaughtered some of my bee-keepers and woodcutters as they wandered around the forest. By the time my soldiers had chased the invaders off, five or six pretty popular dwarves had been murdered. Although many dwarves were saddened by this event, the blinding beauty of the freedoms they enjoyed kept them calm and understanding. The same could not be said for the trouble-making daughter of the militia commander, Rakust Gatinlik. She took the news pretty badly-- so badly, in fact, that she decided to kill everything in her path:

Well, that didn't last long. Let's take a more detailed look at what happened.

And now, let's take a more detailed look at who was involved in this battle.

What happened becomes clear. Rakust went berserk, then attacked her mother's cat. Her mother comes out from the barracks and proceeds to smash her daughter's brains out.

Mom must be striken with grief over such a tragic death...  :'(

NOPE.

I am glad not to live in the brutal world of Dwarf Fortress.

DF General Discussion / Re: What is your favorite type of Iron?
« on: July 28, 2011, 10:50:13 pm »
My favorite iron ore is magnetite:

I took this photo at the Rushmore Cave gift shop. A lot of gift shops have cabinets full of small polished rocks and ores that kids (or geology/DF fans) can buy, and there are also whole stores dedicated to selling rocks, ores, gems, fossils, and crafts made from all those. I bought a 2-pound chunk of Obsidian from one in Keystone, South Dakota. It's pretty cool to have something that you deal with in dwarf fortress on a regular basis.

Lost Sea (Sweetwater TN)

An underground lake?  :o
I've got far too many terrifying childhood memories from Hazy Maze Cave in Mario 64 to ever set foot in that cave.
