usually through the stress/stability measurements which replace the "happiness" meter
Does this mean there's no "positive excitement" (like joy of giving birth, which should be neither "stable" nor "stressed") status anymore?

General Discussion / Re: NSA Leaks - All your WoW are belong to us.

Judge Richard Leon declared that the mass collection of metadata probably violates the fourth amendment, which prohibits unreasonable searches and seizures, and was "almost Orwellian" in its scope. In a judgment replete with literary swipes against the NSA, he said James Madison, the architect of the US constitution, would be "aghast" at the scope of the agency’s collection of Americans' communications data.

"What if" is perfectly valid too, esp. in case of intentionally making encryption weak. Vulnerabilities, thanks to NSA, are already there and just waiting for some outsider to be found. And they WILL look hard, now knowing that they exist. Considering how easy nowadays is to build custom numbers-crunching rigs (see BC mining rigs people have), its not that hard to achieve enough computational power to exploit w/e vulnerabilities NSA built in.
And we better ask and prepare for "what if" scenarios now, rather than after some rogue hackers crash world economics.

General Discussion / Re: I like anime, do you like anime?

I've been meaning to get into the Visual Novel scene for quite some time, but haven't really done it yet for reasons unknown to the world. What is this MLA you speak of? All a Google found me was this one? (Which could be it.) I've probably asked this before, but any other VN suggestions? I've only played a few small Ren'Py ones made by English-speakers (including Katawa Shoujo, which was pretty great, in my humble opinion) so far...also I probably have asked this before, I forget. :S (Also, I have Windows now, so these things will work! Yay!)
MLA is one of best VNs in existence, but together with MLE and MLU its VERY long (up to 100 hours of reading), and quality differs a lot between games. MLE (Muv-Luv Extra, which is bundled together with Muv-Luv Unlimited in a single game "Muv-Luv") starts as generic romcom in school setting, and then it gradually becomes more and more epic.
Although if you didn't play any jap romcoms before, MLE shouldn't be too painful for you, and you probably would even enjoy it.

Recently released in English Grisaia should be good choice as well, I've rated it 9/10 myself.

Otherwise, just look at top games on VNDB and choose any that has tags/descriptions you find interesting.

Also from my understanding the worst and most unlikable characters in Grisaia (Makina and Amane) have the best routes...
You finished Makina's route and still don't like her?
First half of her route (before shit got serious) is best part of game, she's so adorable there with all these military pranks.
Worst character for me is Michiru, only saving grace was Michiru-2, but writer fscked up even that.

You had to take breaks?  I think the only time I ever had to stop playing a VN because I was too upset was in MLA, and you all know what I'm referring too if you've played MLA.
I believe I got CHOMP and aftermatch w/out breaks, but it was shorter than Angelic Howl and not as exhausting.

Amane should hopefully be at least entertaining, I hope.
Its most depressing route of them all, I've had to take breaks each 30-40 minutes to finish Angelic Howl in one sitting, not something I've expected after all that happy comedy in common route and silly, but still happy Sacchi route.

the problem being that they are both yet to be translated.
Well, koestl said that it shouldn't take too long for him to tl them and its reasonable to expect release of at least one of them within year.

EDIT:
I really wouldn't mind if they continued Makina's Good End in some way.  I can't believe it ends just like that.
Well, there's afterstory in Meikyuu.

There's apparently more on that Guardian story,
Quote
The man was unmoved. And so one of the more bizarre moments in the Guardian's long history occurred – with two GCHQ security experts overseeing the destruction of hard drives in the Guardian's basement just to make sure there was nothing in the mangled bits of metal which could possibly be of any interest to passing Chinese agents. "We can call off the black helicopters," joked one as we swept up the remains of a MacBook Pro.
I wonder if Reporters Without Borders or other journalistic associations will dare to call out Cameron on these crimes.

Climbing invaders would be best thing in the release if we get it. We would finally be forced into putting some thoughts into defense design instead of relying on same old setups that worked back in 40d, and it would make me actually play the game again.

Is it a case of the minister not having yet been properly briefed, changing plans or deliberate ambiguity?
Neither, its just diplomatic way of telling Kerry to shut up and stop his insane demands. Putin wouldn't have to be that straight if Kerry would listen to Lavrov.

if the whole missing flight thing is true.
Snowden not being abroad that Havana flight was confirmed by ~30 different news agencies, including CNN.
Also, apparently "White House spokesman Jay Carney" believes hes still here in Ruissa.

USA granted asylum (or, to be precise, bribed him to defect in the first place) to russian defector Poteev in 2010s under Obama's regime. Demanding Snowden's extradition now is too hypocritical even by statedepartment's double-standards, there is no chance we will even consider such requests.

Other Games / Re: Towns

Bought this one on linux steam.

Some major issues for me:
 - Building aboveground stuff is as annoying as in DF. At least make it possible to queue rectangular areas of walls/floors with automatic order resolution, so I would not have to micromanage it row by row.
 - Citizens rushing ahead of heroes in dungeons. Even providing everyone iron/spider armour and weapons doesn't help, as monsters tend to gang up on single civvies.
 - Dungeons tend to be too long, civvies starve while walking from one end to another. At least needs df-like backpack with food feature.
 - Animal farms. I've built about 10 cow farms, they didn't produce enough cows, so eventually I've added 6 more and then went to manage dungeons. Only when civvies started dropping dead from starvation I've noticed that something went wrong. My farm area was flooded with dozens of cows, and everyone was busy feeding them instead of making food for themselves. All produced wheat went towards cows, so bakery was disrupted. I've managed to butcher them all in the end and make tons of steaks, but this should be automanaged like rest of food production.
