Just hit year 2 in latest 42.03 fort. Accidentally uncovered first cavern, dug all the way down to the magma, leave df running while lunching... and I come back to realise that my lovely little fort of less than 100 dwarfs is crawling at 2-4 fps. turning temperature off does nothing. Sealed cavern access, magma accesses all blocked by smelters and forge impassable tiles.. Best guess is the various fruit/leaf/snow spatter murdered fps like whoa. .. If only dfhack 42.03 were out and I could run clean map all.

Carving out a new fort in the side of a waterfall, had to make an external staircase to go around the aquifer painlessly. Discovered a new thing about the fort's embark... the lower sections of the river that the waterfall empties into freezes over. The upper section doesn't. I now have a river  with a slowly increasing wall of ice, courtesy of said waterfall. Truly lovely.

Realised my fireblob FB was still alive. It's happily turning the first cavern layer's moss and beasties into fire, leaving a trail of ash, and steaming the lakes away as it wanders. I ought to either set up a collapsing trap or a caging set up to either dispose of it or to collect it for future use. Or leave it alive in the caverns as a punishment for dwarves and gobbos that offend me.

Edit: Realised that actually, the fireblobby has actually set the TREE-SHROOMS on fire. ... and probably roasted one of my dwarfs that got into the caverns somehow. Not to mention creating 'cave-in' notifications when it destroys a tree-shroom. Or at least that's what I figure happened with that collapse notification from an unrevealed cavern area.

I started a new fort. Exposed the caverns, blocked off the access, and go back to carving out all the bits of a functional near-surface fort. Then a FB visits, a flaming blob.. that can't get to me, so I ignore it. Then, after a while, I get a GCS fight notification, so I start carving down in preparation for a GCS/cave critter lure trap. That's when I discover that Mr Flameblob FB, apparently died or set off a gigantic cavern fire, as the cave floor is covered in ash and flickering fires at the edges. And there's a slowly drying pool of mud in one corner that looks suspiciously like it used to be covered in water until a FB-splosion happened... If I had the combat reports, I'd repost them for potential epicness. As it is, thanks to the fire I'm pretty sure most of the 1st cavern is clear ...

Cleaning up after a gobbo siege, putting the finishing touches on a drowning trap... and the necromancer tower decides to pay me a visit. With 4 human necromancers hauling along their entourage of dead human bodies. This is going to be fun... or !!Fun!!..

A were-ass child 'visited' my fort. A few dead animals, dwarf-children and emergency militia members later, it transformed back into a human child, who promptly gets chased all over the map by my surviving militia.... who seem to actually have some grasp of tactics today, and chased it into a 7/7 pond... whacking it over the head with their copper crossbows and bruising the flesh... and 1 z-level below, I see this:

An unconscious, over-exerted, DROWNING, human child were-ass
I can only imagine the scene.

A peaceful, tropical mangrove swamp wilderness next to the ocean, a slowly growing settlement abruptly disrupted by a werecreature visit...

And after said were creature transforms into something less troublesome, it gets chased into a deep pond, where the vengeful militia survivors are furiously drubbing it on the head with their metal crossbows whenever it tries to come up for air. Wow.

Have built and tested my GCS silk farm now. Works wonderfully. Was tested extra well by one of the fortress' many dwarven children, who went and stood right next to the GCS fortifications.... baiting the GCS to spit lots and lots and lots of web. Unfortunately for that brave soul, when the bridge went up to block the GCS from view she was crushed. Presumably crushed anyway.

But what a way to go.

Just caught a GCS in the cage trapped entrance to the caverns!

Now to figure out an effective way to harvest GCS silk....

I wonder which is better - leaving the GCS wild for easier silk collection, or taming it to feed sieges to it? Not that I've had sieges lately, mind, even though every liason visit has tales of my civ getting overrun..

Had a dwarf child claim a Craft shop, then berserk for some reason or the other. Probably because of lacking materials, not that I was bothering to check a child-mood. I set my fledgling military on the berserking brat, who promptly gets struck down... and while I'm leaving the mangled corpse there in my main stairwell to toughen up my dwarfs mentally, one dwarf or another gets upset and starts to fight each other... over and over. It'll be good to see how many dwarfs survive this... quasi-tantrum spiral?

Is there a way to turn blackberry/raspberry/whatever- berry plants into something usable?

They keep taking up space in my food stockpiles from farming and gathering, and I can't figure out how to turn them into useable components.

Got a nice little fort up and running in 40.09. Finally had enough of a military to actually try and fight sieges, as opposed to slamming the gates and waiting for them to go away.

I must say, it certainly feels as if in this version, if the enemy siege can't path into the fort, they give up and go away fairly quickly, which is minimally disruptive to the fort.

I had a trap corridor with cage traps up, to winnow out incoming sieges until my 2 squads can snipe and hammer them at leisure. The next siege promptly arrives in winter....  gets bogged down in the trapped corridor... and turned into goblin paste by one of their own, who was apparently a weremonkey. Said weremonkey gobbo then walks into a cage trap. I'm so amused at this point, I turn the squads loose with mop up instructions, and have my haulers set up the were monkey/goblin cage in the main meeting area. I like to imagine the fort idlers and children gather to laugh, point, and poke, especially when the transformation occurs....

I started a new small map, after reading that it might help with the fps issues. Less than a ingame year, while the first autumn caravan was visiting, I got visited by a werelizard, within a 12 square range of my still constructed wagon where all the recent immigrants were chilling.

Chaos and flying body parts ensued until some dorf got an axe where the axe would be good just as the werelizard turned back. Unfortunately, the death and misery triggered a tantrum spiral I'm currently trying to outlast at the moment...

This is the most 'fun' DF has thrown at me recently! Heh.
