If you don't see the passive aggressive jabs at DF in Ayroc's posts, then you really need to get out more.Assume makes an ass out of me and you.
He doesn't have to prove anyone and you don't need to blow this out of proportions. It's a game idea inspired by DF, and he set off to do it. This will not "run Toady out of business", because people can like two games of the same "genre" at the same time.Aryoc hasn't proven to me that he's not just some other sucker looking to ride DF's popularity while making veiled disparaging comments about the game and it's creator.I'm willing to admit I'm wrong.
Prove it. 2 out of the 4 posts above yours on this page were people calling you out on the most obvious way you were wrong, will you admit it?
Like I said, if he proves me wrong then I'll admit it. But that requires a statement from him and proof through his work and dedication to his game.
That'll take time.
ITT: people calling a very early pre-alpha build of a game worthless.I agree with this. There is nothing wrong with making a game based off of something you were inspired by. For example, Minecraft was inspired by DF, but Minecraft is not like DF at all so does that make it "miss the point"? No. Not only does having more games of a "genre" make competition, but it also adds new ideas to the table. Everyone's got their own vision, the guy making Goblin Camp may have a different one than Toady's but that doesn't make it better or worse.
Seriously, guys, stop it. you're making me feel bad about being a DF fan, and I've been playing since 2D. I'm just glad no other fanbase feels this way about a game, otherwise we might not have progressed past Doom and Akalabeth. He's making a game clearly influenced by DF and that's a Good Thing. I, personally, would like to see multiple projects along this line, so that there might be a bit of competition.
Over on the SA forums they're saying that DF is just a mad libs generator, and in a lot of ways they're right. The stated purpose of DF is to automatically generate a world, replete with legends, civilizations, monsters, and people. We like it because not only is it a madlibs generator, but it's a damn fine madlibs generator.
This Kobald Camp project already has some things that I think it does better then DF (and anyone who tries to flat out say I'm wrong is a moron. Toady is, in fact, human, and he'll be the first to admit he's fallible). Aside from the UI (which is great so far) I like the fact that the real work is done by your orcs, and all the menial labour seems to be done by the gobbos. I absolutely love the idea of setting a hard floor for materials, so that you never need to worry about running out of, for example, iron bars. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that if you have enough goblins when you issue a work order they'll bring all the materials to the workshop at once.
And finally, anyone saying anything denigrating about the gameplay: Don't be stupid, the guy only started it about a month ago, there is no gameplay yet.

Maybe there needs to be a FAQ, and question 1 can be 'what's with the interface' so we can finally cram it through people's skulls why interface is not a feature to implement at this stage of development. And I wholesomely disagree. Toady is at the stage of development of making Dwarf Fortress a playable copy. Of course Toady still has many things he wants to add into the game, but being honest no one knows when that will be. But a better interface isn't that hard to add and would actually be beneficial when adding new features, because instead of adding it to a broken one, your adding it to one that works. And yet again people saying that they don't get the new military screen are just showcasing that point. The new military screen is terrible just like the rest, but because the military screen doesn't have a bunch of tutorials explaining how to use it, it's seen as being the worst part. When we first saw it on .31.01's release no one understood it, but I'm guessing in a couple of months when people have explained it enough with videos and such, aka when people actually get it, it will seem easy. It's just that, an interface shouldn't take that amount of time and effort to understand. A 3rd party shouldn't be required to jump into a game. That's why an easier to understand interface/UI is essential and not a "throw-away bottom of the list" feature.
Eh, it's good to have some trolling once in a while, keeps people on their toes. Everybody here is soft, presumably from a year of no updates, and consequently not much to discuss. It's also true that Toady doesn't really care what the community suggest should be in the game, and that he would rather use his own ideas. But, an easier and more accessible interface I think is way more different than wanting another "cool" feature, and is something that really should be a high priority. When people say that the interface we have now is fine, besides the military screen, it doesn't really help their cause. You see, the interface besides military seem ok to us only because we've had it for a long time, and in reality the military screen is just as bad as the rest of it. I mean, with a better interface and/or UI could make more people see what's so great about DF, minus watching/reading a bunch of tutorials and possible losing interest, and hey more people means more money for Toady!
Unfortunately I actually can't think of much to say regarding that video. It would be excellent if we had that kind of thing in DF, but the community is so divided over it, and Toady's time/willingness so limited that I can't see us doing more then gazing longingly at it from a distance.
Like poor children staring through a department store window at all the beautiful things they will never have.
Just because someone knows who created a free game doesn't mean they will donate to them. Even more so if you keep telling a random person to give money to a guy he doesn't know it will make it worse.lol if they dont visit a second time they wont find this piece of software.
Stonesense got a great deal of attention and direct links from various sources. It's definitely plausible that there are players who never opened bay12games.com in their browser.
XKCD has stick figures that don't have faces.I don't get it your avatars a smiley face.
An unironic smiley face is what it is supposed to be. The smiley has every chance of being very ironic when compared to my actual feelings. It is, however, at its most ironic when the person viewing the smiley is aware of which xkcd comic it is from, and makes the reference. Unfortunately, it is a lethal reference, and with sudden knowledge of its purpose it could quickly cull the population of a message board.
