The Secret Weapon of the Bedroom Adventure.
There's only one thing that comes to mind...

Just a quick question:  If you had to redesign Dwarf Fortress's UI, how would you go about doing it?
Dwarf Therapist is a useful program, but how would you go about recreating that in DF?  And what about the other menus?
And yes, I know this isn't a quick question, but it seems a little more useful.

That's it.  They had already loaded, and in trying two different ways to get them to load, they tried to load two times.  I knew it was going to be something as simple as that :).  Another question, though.  How do I get colonies on other planets set up.  Do I need to tell my ships to load infrastructure, and dump it on the colony?  And do I need to make factories on a different planet, then ship them over to the new colony?

Did you select the right orders? You have to tell the ships to load mines from the planet that the mines are on, then unload the mines(or all installations) on the target location.
Are your ships not moving at all? Make sure they aren't in the shipyard taskgroup. If they still aren't moving, make sure they have engines.
Are the ships civilian controlled? You can't control civilian ships at all.
Ha.  Well, I set load automated mines as a primary order, and told the task force to specifically load mines from Earth (and drop them on an asteroid), neither of which work.  The event updates screen says "Cargo Task Group failed to load Automated Mine at Earth.  Please reschedule the orders for this fleet."  They are classified as commercial, so does that mean they are civilian?  They do have engines ;D, so I guess it must be that last option.  What do I need to do to make them actually carry stuff?

I started playing this game, but I'm pretty sure I've been failing miserably.  Can anyone give me some tips on how to get some mining facilities set up in my solar system?  I've got ships going around surveying all the bodies, but I can't get my commercial ships with 5 cargo holds to load automated (or not) mines.  I've created colonies on two asteroids and mercury, but nothing seems to work.  Should I just give up and see if mining modules on ships would work?  I'd have to research them, and I'm running out of Mercassium.

if a trophy system gets implemented, this could quite possibly be more of a reason to play then dwarf mode.
Make a trophy out of everything you kill.
fixed

All it does for me is exactly cancel out any benefit I normally got from using partial print.
Oh well. :(

By the way, the "df directory" is the main folder where df is in, right?  Just wanted to make sure I was putting it in the right place!

I would use books as a balancer.  Low level dwarves wouldn't be able to do everything instantly (as right now even a dwarf with no experience in a skill can do everything in the skill, if shoddily), but books could could be an easy and quick way of boosting a dwarf to, say, level 3 in a skill, where he could now do everything related to that skill.  For example, if you put a cow in front of me, I would have no idea how to milk it, but if I looked it up on the internet first, at least I would know how to start.

Unless my Physics teacher is secretly a df fan, I got df in the suggestions after just dw again on a classroom computer.  And I wasn't signed into my gmail account, either.

DF General Discussion / Download Count?
« on: February 22, 2010, 11:43:37 pm »
I'm always surprised at how few letters it takes to get Dwarf Fortress to appear in the suggestion list on Google (dw).  Which got me wondering, how many people actually play Dwarf Fortress?  I don't know much about computers, but how hard would it be to have a counter that would tell how many times the new version is downloaded?  Either that (which would probably be inaccurate because of mirrors and multiple downloads), or a number of the people registered on this forum would be pretty cool.

I think that the only way magic could be implemented into DF while keeping the spirit of the rest of the game is to stay away from set spells, like seen in most fantasy games.  From what I understand, Toady is aiming for an end result where each world generated is unique from others (dwarf-lung men, anyone?).  If there were set spells, people would get used to them fairly quickly, no matter how many there were.
