DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Game objective
« on: September 07, 2013, 01:49:29 pm »
Succession or community forts tend to have a set of rules or role-play style objectives, you may have more fun joining/starting one of those. We started one on another forum and it became an unwritten rule that each ruler would make an obsidian tower tomb before his year was up, in addition to whatever other projects they had in mind. The random stories that come from these forts are absolutely priceless, and one of my favorite things about this game. There's so much detail waiting to be found if you just look for it.

It sounds like you just need some structure to give you a goal, if you can't come up with something yourself (due to lack of creativity or lack of knowledge about the game) this is a pretty fun way to do so. However, it is possible this just isn't the game for you, and that would be unfortunate, but there's a lot to love here and hope you find a way to enjoy it.

Tilesets and Graphics / Re: Ironhand's Graphics Set (on Hiatus)

Right, you'll just have to play with it for some time to get used to the symbols, it's the same for vanilla DF. Even if the same symbols weren't reused for other things, there's no way to automatically recognize everything unless you sit and study a spreadsheet or something (which I don't personally find fun or interesting but to each his own, right?). I've used Ironhand's for so long that I have trouble recognizing things if I use Mayday's or even the old ascii.

I think you want the tile magic thread actually.

Have you heard the good news about Jesus?

No, who is that?

I hate to poke fun at religion (don't I?) but that was hilarious.

Cool, re-installing would have been my next suggestion. Glad you got it working, it's definitely worth the price. I would also recommend trying multiplayer once you really get used to the game. I never play anything online because of the sheer amount of jerks there usually are (and amount I know that like to brag about being one) but on a good server, this is possibly the best thing ever. Try to get a skin before that though, too many default skins online, have fun!

It's the blackscreen load problem. Looks like I just got screwed out of 15$, according to what I've been able to dig up on it.
Maybe try the offline client? Using mods this happens on the browser version, but the offline one works fine, worth a shot.

Nothing else to say, just reassuring the fact that Ironhand, Wormslayer, you guys rule the fort. Carry on lads.

Kind of surprised the call for screenshots hasn't produced some amazing works yet.  ???

Well it appears FRAPS doesn't like DF anymore, but I took a couple with the in-game tool. They are severely cropped, and kind of hard to see (damn FRAPS) but do show off some of the different tiles.

in the new fort

Some wilderness

Use them if you like, until some good ones come along anyway.

They break off from the bigger ones, it's unclear whether it's a random thing or dependent on fire. Some have said they split when burnt but not from swords. I've definitely seen them split from fire personally, but not sure about any other attacks.

No, the smallest ones move toward you and push you around, but don't hurt. They're great pets ;D

It doesn't seem the slime balls do anything yet, or at least it hasn't been discovered. The other thing is clay, which can be found around water(?) and sand. Put it in the furnace to create bricks, which can then be crafted into brick blocks (2x2 I think).

Also, tiny slimes are the best!

p.s Slimes do spawn/respawn in light, Notch mentioned adding a mob that wasn't afraid of light, I guess this is it.

...I don't think that would even be possible, considering that a Minecraft world isn't flat. Well, I guess it would be possible, but it would require one heck of a huge amount of sea!
Depending on what your view distance is set to.
-(yeah, ninja, I know)-

Regarding land claims, what happens if someone decides to surround your land with a ten-foot wall, then claim that? Though, I think generally they are a good idea, they need to be worked out quite a bit. Maybe limit the number that can be placed dependent on the number of players. Or allowing the number/possibility to be set by the person running the server?

It's very good too! ;D [/redundancy]

There are a lot of references in this game, and the ascii character in the video is one of the player created heroes that can be up/downloaded. It references Dragon Warrior/Quest, Demon's Souls, and also has a lot of programmer in-jokes.

Why was the king able to turn everything 3D just through will?
Ask him, it's funny. :)

Oooh...will probably start a new world tonight to take advantage of the new fun stuff.

By the by is there a way to use the custom textures WITHOUT using the hacked client?  I'd imagine we won't be able to login to multiplayer with a client that allows you to speedhack, fly, etc.
To use custom textures, open the minecraft.jar file and replace those inside. It should be in your %temp% folder. Check here for details. (old but still same process, pretty sure same thing for MP)

Also, besides the realistic texture pack Taels texture pack is pretty nice too.

And make a backup of the textures you use, they will be overwritten when Notch updates.
