DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Saw-like fortress on adventurer mode?
« on: January 03, 2013, 04:29:41 pm »
Just asking, has anyone created a fortress which when played on adventurer mode is like a saw movie?

If not (and even so) then ideas for rooms here.

1) Upon entering the square stone room, the door shuts behind you. In the middle of the opposite wall lie vertical bars. Beyond these lie stairs. The ceiling is entirely made of hatches. There seem to be some creatures up there. To your left are some more vertical bars, but nothing is visible beyond these. Three levers lie to your right.

You pull the first. To your surprise, the vertical bars that lead to the stairs retract. But the temptation to know what the others do is too much. Upon pulling the second, there is a distant gurgling sound. Water slowly starts to fill the room. You know you can still escape up the stairs alive, so you reach for, and pull the final lever. Hundreds of cats fall from the ceiling.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: DF is Rough..
« on: January 02, 2013, 02:23:50 am »
So I began playing DF several days ago and finally had a decent fortress. Everything seemed perfect, but I forgot about preparing defences. I set up traps around the entrance to my base, but my military was terrible. It consisted of random dwarves with weak fighting skills and no equipment. (Good enough to dispatch the occassional kobold thief)
Suddenly, a goblin siege! My cages worked wonderfully; catching every goblin but one. Well..that single goblin tore through 30 dwarves before I lured it into a new cage trap. I also forgot that I had made dwarves ignore bodies(stupid me!)... The miasma collected and EVERY dwarf was unhappy. I worked to create coffins and increase the size of my graveyard, but dwarves continuously raged and destroyed every carpenter's workshop I set up. Finally! Almost every body had been laid to rest, but that wasn't the end.. several dwarves went beserk and tripled the body count. When those bodies were almost all buried and several dwarves were content..a legendary beast appears! As the venomous spider got closer, some dwarves rage and destroy every farm plot I had. I retreated underground and built walls to avoid the beast. My fortress ended as my dwarves starved to death. Why Toady, why?!?  :'(

I remember a very similar experience, except my last dwarf was a fisherdwarf who, after waking up from a coma, became melancholy.

So naturally he had a little walk, went and sat beside the river, thinking about life.

Then he jumped in.

DF General Discussion / Re: Caravan Arc poll!
« on: October 06, 2011, 05:43:42 am »
So the results are in. One third of people think that it will take at least three years before the arc is fully released, and sixty percent of the remaining voters estimated that the release will take between one and two years.

I guess we'll find out if we were right sooner or later...

There's too possibilities here: It'll be either less or more than 36 months. The others are subsets of less than 36. If this were a bet, I'd go with less than 36. Really though, we have no way of knowing. If Toady keeps doing this thing where he implements a ton of features to the extent that the actual caravan arc content in each release is almost a sidenote compared to the other stuff (as in this first one) then it will be more than 36. If he does that with only one or two others, it could easily be less than 36.

Really now? Who would have thought! :o
No seriously, I think everyone understands that there is no reason to fill up the options by writing zero to six months; six to twelve months; twelve to twenty-four months; twenty-four to ... etc. It's implied, just like like ln(x) has an implied domain of x>0.

And besides, people don't really tend to guess "This textbook will come in Thursday afternoon at exactly two hours and forty minutes past noon."
People just say "It will be in by Friday" But who uses textbooks anyway? It's not really between what times it will come in, more what is the latest date it will come in? ;)

This is just to view our community's guess at development rate... we will see what percentage of people actually guess correctly! - When it is released.

NO! Dwarf fortress will remain in development by a countably small number of people (by which I mean countable on a hand) for all eternity!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Best way to build an aboveground fort?
« on: August 12, 2011, 06:13:54 am »
I tend not to do this straight off, but gradually shift overtime to an aboveground fort.
As has been said previously, you need lots of stone. lots. I suggest walling off your fortress with a largish aboveground area. Of course include cage traps in holes in the wall every now and then so that your army has good quality training after they have disposed of the rest of the invaders that decide to try and ruin your fortress. (or town, eventually) Obviously, include two 3-z level ramps on either side of the wall, with a road (which will become your town's main road) leading to one, and a large bridge connecting the ramps. (bonus if there is water or arena below)

Next I build the nobles' houses, just so they can see the extent of damage for themselves if invaders come. Make sure you build a stone block stockpile next to the construction, otherwise the silly dwarves take years to build things. (make the non masons move all the blocks and stone) Be sure to include a few windows in the house, as no house has only walls!

Then make massive apartment buildings, with dining rooms every now again. You can designate different areas of the town for different industries. If you like order, or you can make everyone seem chaotic my building stockpiles (in storerooms, of course) at opposite areas of the town which need the supplies.

Make sure hallways go right to the end of a building, (facing a street) so that when another building on the other side is constructed, so can connect the two with a bridge. Have some more fun by building a jail on a high floor of a building only accessible by bridge.
I enjoy connecting each bridge to a single lever, and see how productive things are when there all the bridges are down.

DF General Discussion / Re: Gender Poll

After some of the comments, I made it a bit more light hearted, as I realize no one took this /will take this seriously anyway, (as we will be able to tell by the number of people who choose the third option.  :P

As I mentioned, this is more to see what the ratio is for people who do play, not for people who play for a month and then give up, never returning to the forum or DF again. :'(

(As only people who are active within the community will see the poll)

There has been a few polls like this, however statistics should at least be gathered every year, so that progress can be viewed.

You should only vote if you play the game or keep up with its' developments. (Please don't gather your friends, make new accounts, and distort the poll - you wouldn't like the FUN involved)

DF Gameplay Questions / main website?
« on: August 02, 2011, 05:38:05 am »
I am slightly confused, as I seem not to be able to access the main website, @ www.bay12games.com

I did not notice any indications of site change, maintenance, or the like.

Could someone please clarify what is happening?
