I've had a problem harvesting Goblinite, so I built myself a trap of sorts.

1. Tether bears to the insides of a courtyard (10x10).
2. Station military in 5x5 rooms extending from the courtyard, separated by forbidden doors.
3. When siegers gather to attack bears, unforbid doors.
4. Raise entrance and exit drawbridges.
5. Laugh.  Maniacally.  No matter what happens.
6. (Optional) If military is quashed, mass conscripts and charge, like under equipped Russian infantry.
7. Laugh harder.

I was browsing the update schedule of DF in general, and near the end of the page I saw that at some point more detail would be given to traps and mechanisms.  Highlights:

1. Weapon traps covering multiple squares
2. Z-level chicanery needed for rock traps
3. Rolling boulder traps
4. Traps requiring specialized parts

What would you like to see involving traps and mechanisms in the future?

I think that referring to them as clowns (and the circus motif in general) contributes to the comedic sociopathy that we have become so enamored with.  It's more entertaining to read about someone gorging themselves on cotton candy before getting their bellies split open by Barnum & Bailey anyway.

I suppose this place is as good as any for an unusual question.

Playing a vanilla install of 40d (2010 military continues to confound me), I found an excellent embark.  Plenty of flux, woods, unicorns, etc.  I built a trade depot and awaited profit, but I found that the entire map was wagon-proofed.  Wagons could not even enter the area.  I had a couple of dedicated woodcutters smack mother nature around to clear some space, but it did not help.  Any advice?

I recently started up a 40d fortress called Woundlabor. 

It happens to be the one in which I dorfed several friends of mine.  Hopefully we'll live up to the name.

Lurker here.

New to adventure mode, and the wiki has been helpful.  I've been seeing a lot of talk about bandit camps and kobold caves, and I'd like to get in on the pogroms with a vengeance, but I've only been able to find bare plains, rivers, and the occasional noob-killing vile groom.  How would I find something a bit more my speed?

Hey, forumgoers.  I have a problem.

I'm running a new install of 30_18 with Mayday graphics, and my miners refuse to dig after the first designation on any level below the first.  I can get them to expand the first floor, and in the first designation they dug up a few stairs.  After that, they would only dig above a certain z-level.  This is a consistent problem for me.  Is anyone else having this problem?
