DF General Discussion / Re: What brought you to DF?
« on: January 25, 2014, 12:57:48 am »
Back in the 2D days, I heard about a game that was hard.  Really hard.  I'm not sure where I heard about it, some forum somewhere on the internet.  But this intrigued me.

So I tried it.  I embarked, and after figuring out how to do something(anything), I set my miners to mining.  I also started building walls around the wagon.  I think it was listed as a 'room.'  Pretty soon my miners drowned as I dug into some water. (i had no idea how right i was playing the game, so i was a bit frustrated)

I didn't try again until 40d, then I used a tutorial and learned pretty quickly.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Pump Stack
« on: September 30, 2013, 05:47:45 pm »
If you want to pump it manually then you need a dwarf on every pump.  And if when just one of them gets tired/thirsty/sleepy/hungry/moody the stack doesn't work.

Well I was planning to jump into Adventure (which I think I've spent about 0.00001% of my DF play-time on to date) but with latest log entry I'm considering just starting up a fort and reading the personality pages for a while and structuring my fort and its functions around the dwarves' personalities.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Way too many giant bugs and insect people

Yes, there are way too many animal-people and they are far less interesting than the animals themselves.

Yup, birch is the [B ]uilding material.  Your dwarf just needs cloth and leather now.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Can't find guy I'm supposed to seek out

You're more likely to get help with this over in Adventure Mode Discussion.

There's nothing wrong with asking for adventure help here, but the other forum has more players who play adventure.  Quite often people only play one mode or the other - I've tried adventure but I usually do Fortress as I'm really bad at adventuring.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Adamantite (Armor v/s Weapons)

Battleaxes are blunt or edge?.

(sorry for the stupid question)

Edged.  Swords and axes are the best adamantine weapons, spears benefit too.  Hammers and maces are (part of) the reason they call it "cotton candy."

Yur-ist

Never imagined it any other way, though I can totally see now how it can be read any number of ways.

Sure thing.  I'm a composer of sorts myself (working on someday being professional - still got a ways to go) so I love this kind of stuff and will be sure to keep an eye on it.

(I'm not sure what your level of expertise/knowledge is, so if you need me to clarify anything I will)

EDIT: made a comment about drums that was due entirely to my mistakes not the song lol

Some ideas:

-add more percussion, gradually.  I know you said you were lacking though, so that may be the cause.  If you can, some syncopated rhythms would be great.

- The second half is a bit odd, feels rather empty.  There may be too much space between the hits (experiment with it) and maybe make the chords bigger.   Some strings added to the brass in the upper and lower registers could make it feel bigger - the brass alone feels kind of thin right now.

- If you want tension, more complex, dissonant chords in the first half could help.  Again, you can gradually build up to that starting simple and getting more complex.  Some higher parts, like violins or woodwinds if you can, moving quickly in runs or arpeggios could add to the excitement.

As for samples, decent free stuff is a bit hard to find.  Sonatina Symphonic is one I found recently, just looking at what was out there, it seemed to be alright, though not without it's problems.  Not sure how much percussion it has with it but you might check that out.

Overall I like the potential here, keep working at it man.

I've noticed that when I gen a region, as opposed to an island world, I get fewer z-levels.  I seem to have no problem getting 100+ with island worlds, though.  Not sure that's actually got anything to do with it...could be like rooth said and you need to change the #s for distance between caverns.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Kobold Invaders Exist
« on: March 12, 2012, 11:19:59 am »
Yes, this has technically been around for a long time, but for most of 0.31.x, kobolds were very rare, as they had a tendency to starve to death during world gen. 40d had kobolds much the same as .034 but if you've not played that long you're not likely to know that.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: My Big Question of the day:
« on: February 20, 2012, 09:37:43 pm »
I can confirm that engraving for a dead caravan guard, whose corpse is in a river, will not work.  Neither will simply building a coffin, with no way to access the body.  Divert the river or live with the ghost, unfortunately.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: What category is stone mugs?
« on: February 17, 2012, 01:28:01 am »
It's a lot simpler to move bins to the depot.  So rather than moving mugs, move the "Finished Goods Bins" which contain the mugs.  If you don't have bins, make some.  Makes thing so much easier and keeps stuff from slowing down workshops.
