DF General Discussion / Re: The DF 0.31.04 Work-In-Progress Thread

I have the same issue with the small version.  Couldn't even find the temp/weather settings in the init file.

Wait, they left the baby behind? ???

They tried, that's for sure.

Why do the wounded deserve to live?

I would argue that part of the game development process is to make something more fun as you go along.

Indeed!

Losing is fun.
It's easier to lose in the new version.
Thus the new version is more fun.

I concede.

He has a point, you know. Some random kid's rant about how a one-man show in alpha stage didn't meet his expectations after seven years of work really shouldn't create a thread 12 pages long. Sure, it was an immature and ignorant OP, but come on, don't you have better things to do?

Being the OP I would really like to know what was ignorant or immature about it.  Or did you even RTFOP?  After nearly two years I don't see an improvement to actual gameplay.  I would argue that part of the game development process is to make something more fun as you go along.  Apart from the combat logs, this version is not much more fun and in some ways significantly less.  Also not a newb (or a kid), saw that somewhere too.  That's all I got, back to lurking.

Yep just to confirm, no Dungeon Master needed.  Just trained war animal (R) at the kennels.  They were traded from the Elves, released from cages.  Came designated "tame".  I have had one kill a raccoon so far, which was cool.

The difficulty in the old DF was the interface.  The difficulty in the new DF is the interface AND the bugs.  I care about the game and want it to be successful and relevant.  It won't be at this rate.  I'm not angry at all, just disappointed.

???  DF is great and thanks to Toady for making it.  But I don't get this release.  This is not what I have been waiting 2 years for.  It's great that goblins have been seriously improved but he's also seriously weakened DF standbys: marksdwarves, wardogs and traps.  The game plays the same as the 2008 release, except the player is totally screwed.  Where that release became too easy quickly, this release becomes unplayable due to the military interface.  Goblins did need to be tougher, but I need the ability to train my dwarves to fight them.  I need a fair fight where if I build the right fortifications for my guys and and give them the right training facilities and equipment, they will succeed.  Currently not the case.  Frankly the improvements to the world generator don't make this game better.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Hermit
« on: September 04, 2009, 09:05:52 pm »
Well at this point I enjoy my fortresses more for the stories than anything else.  I can't get motivated for mega-projects, etc. So I was working on a mature fortress (>$1million wealth) and out of boredom decided to undermine my trade depot while the humans were there trading.  End result was a hole through 8 plus levels of the fort, human and dwarf injuries, humans and their animals on various levels.  In order to increase the pain, I quickly walled in the surviving traders in their various tunnels, along with a particular unfortunate dwarf whom I named "Hermit".  All this in an attempt to get the humans to besiege me.  I would occaisionally dump beer and food down for Hermit.

When my "Hermit" finally died of neglect and my dwarfs broke into his prison, they found that he had built a mason workshop, crafts workshop, carpenter shop, his own dining room, bedroom, office and....tomb.  They proceeded to bury the poor guy in the tomb he had built from himself and move the countless skull totems he had created to the stockpiles.  The humans remain ambivalent about their lost trading party.

Build random spikes and pressure plates all over the place.   Wait for the pain.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Butchering Pets...
« on: October 07, 2008, 09:23:08 pm »
Here I go out on a limb.  Pretty sure the answer is yes, that once the owner dies they become butcherable.  If this is not true, not sure how to explain events in my fort.

DF Gameplay Questions / Spike symbol
« on: October 01, 2008, 12:23:08 pm »
Can anyone tell me why the character representing a couple of my menacing spikes changed from a line to a sigma or big "E"?  These are connected to pressure plates.  Thanks!

Well I just decided to put a few pressure plates linked to spikes in the hallways.  I figured this would inflict maximum suffering with a chance for survival.  And least effort on my part.  Down to 148 and counting.  Pretty much everyone's freaking out.  Got a legendary buckler made with image of dwarf striking dwarfs with plaintive gesture too.
