Tilesets and Graphics / Re: [0.40.24v00] Phoebus' Graphic Set

Oh good lord, yea, I thought i'd be a clever boy and just sorta drop in the Phoebus' tileset into the current vanilla DF art folder and rename a few things, but... not quite  :o
Folder structure has changed a bit more drastically than i'd realized.
Bit of a shame, this and Mayday were the only tilesets I really used much at all.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

Things have been going well in the peaceful land i'd created, a little 'too' peaceful, so I decided to start digging down to see what sort of trouble I could stir up beneath my fortress.
Kept digging till I breached a cavern quite a bit closer to the surface than I was expecting.

Webs, webs everywhere, and a big, fat cave spider lurking off in the distance.  Hmm.. can't have that.
So I send my copper-garbed military in for thier first big fight in the 3 years since they were drafted.
The 4 of them that showed up first immediately got webbed, poisoned, and shaken to death, fancy armor be damned.  Spider just bit right through it.  Well, this certainly sucks.  I made a mental note for the future to wait for all them to muster together before charging into danger.

Meanwhile, one of my 1st wave stone masons shuffled over to grab the gear from his fallen comrades before reinforcements arrived,  casually beating the spider into a pile of gore with nothing but his bare fists as he did so.

...I just..  :o

I recently created a world with hardly any mega beasts, no necromancy, were-people curses or any of that, just to see what would happen in a more “relatively peaceful” sort of world.
Turns out, with no giant beasts to cull the population and give people something to do, the population of humans and elves exploded, and they went to war with each other instead.
250 years later, Half a dozen wars with thousands of casualties on each side, less than 100 kobolds remain in the world, even less goblins.
On the bright side, The dwarf population seems pretty darn healthy, so hopefully all this equates to a pretty easy-going and laid-back fortress mode.

Oh neat, i've been using the Mayday tileset on and off for years now, i'm a big fan of the look.
Also glad to see Mikes still around and in the forums.  :D

Also, the steam release is gonna be pretty darn interesting, i'll give it that

This thread has been read over 2 million times.
2 million.
It's hard for me to wrap my head around that.

Hope you all have a warm, safe holiday and feast until you need to loosen your pants!

..unless you're not wearing any, which is fine, but might lead to some awkward family situations.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dwarves cannot find materials
« on: August 20, 2015, 05:11:46 am »
Sorry to bump an old thread, but i'm having similar issues with my gem shop.
I've got plenty of uncut gems in my stockpile, but when I assign the task to cut or encrust something, they say I don't have that particular gem.
I'm wondering if its a bug, or if the dwarves just lost them or something, or if my manager isn't keeping his records straight.

[Edit] I had the soap problem as well, but I solved it by giving oils, lye, and fat thier own little stockpiles and forbidding them from my main food pantry.  Suddenly cat soap everywhere.

I started as a dwarf, and I suddenly feel ashamed because I don't know how the hell to get outside.

The whole fortress is a winding freaking maze, and I feel like i'm going in circles.

Edit - I finally found the entrance.  That was quite an obscenely, unnecessarily long staircase.

Dwarves have an unnatural tendency now to climb trees and fall out of them. Mine also have a bad habit of climbing around down inside the mouth of the volcano I embarked to. I'm about to lose my carpenter to dehydration because the frozen pool on the north side of the volcano is the only source of water available to me. I should have foreseen this. I may need to dig down to the lower cavern layers in search of water...

I'm feeling slightly uncomfortable with this whole 'climbing' thing in my fortress.

I don't like the idea of people things I chuck down my garbage pits being able to 'possibly' climb out again later.
Guess i'll just have to make them that much deeper to make sure everything breaks when it hits the bottom.

...or make the top narrower than the bottom..   stuff can't climb on ceilings yet, right?

Wood.
Wood everywhere.
Cutting down the trees keeps giving me upwards of 20+ wood each, and I have a feeling these weren't even the 'big' ones.
I'll never have to worry about charcoal ever again.

One tree has already filled my starting wood stockpile.

On the left is the remains of the 'Welcome home' party an alligator threw for me moments after I'd settled in.

If it makes you feel any better, in my very first fortress in this version, within 5 minutes I lost 3 dwarves and 2 dogs to a single alligator who then became 'named'.

Stinatot is now waiting quietly on the riverbank, chewing on the remains of my former fisherdwarf.

"WELCOME BACK."

Question...  does this mean that we shouldn't hit the big red "DESTROY IT ALL"  button on our fortresses when we get tired of them?

I'm gonna be slightly worried about singlehandedly wiping out the dwarven population when my megaprojects turn lethal, or when I feel like casting my whole site into the magma.

Hopefully the number of dwarves/hilldwarves or whatever remains abstract, so i'll keep getting a steady supply of test subjects migrants to try out my steam trap help around the fortress.
