Also... how is he old enough to have an adult kid? His poor unsatisfied wife* had to crap out his shitty kid?

Baffling, dude looks like he's 12.

Yeah he's like 40, and was famously a proud adult virgin in the Bush era, I think it's his sister people are horny for.

Your problem is that you have parties... only designate meeting areas from zones, not wells, statues, cages, and don't make meeting areas out of tables.

Yes, this worked! I had never heard of this before, but I freed up my well and memorial halls and the liaison went straight to the mayor's office. Thanks for the help!

Hey ancistrus, did you ever figure this out? I've been trying to get my mayor to meet with the liaison for many months with no luck, and just noticed that the liaison has some injuries (I guess sustained during a tantrum, but I didn't see).

I had another hypothesis as to what might be wrong (a walled-off depressed weredeer had an "Attend Meeting" job for a long time with no path to the mayor, thought maybe it was ahead in the meeting queue or something), but trying to address that didn't work (no meeting after releasing it, and still no meeting with the liaison after the full moon came and the weredeer was put down).

I interpreted the "some specific hundreds of thousands of stanzas" problem to mean like a form that requires exactly 314159 stanzas of 26 lines each or something.

Thanks, after the next full moon your understanding appears to be correct: the same dwarf transformed again and the other three "were" fine.

DF Gameplay Questions / werebeast bites and transformations
« on: February 05, 2015, 10:53:44 pm »
I quarantined the wrong dwarf after a weredeer attack, and as a result had a few more get bitten during the next full moon. I walled up the four bitten survivors in two groups of two. At the next full moon, only one of the four transformed, but it did not attack the dwarf it was locked in with.

So, are the three who didn't turn definitely okay, or could they start changing at the next full moon? Is the one who didn't transform but was not attacked by the one who did a weredeer who is just lying dormant or something?

According to the wiki, a werebeast bite victim "has a high chance to change when the next full moon comes" and "[w]erebeasts of the same species will...not normally fight." I guess I'm confused whether "high chance" means a high chance of being converted to a werebeast, or just of transforming at the first opportunity. And whether the same species cooperation would apply in that case, so that a werebeast who transforms can recognize one who doesn't (provided it's possible to be a werebeast and not transform if it's a fresh bite).

Any ideas? I could just leave everyone locked away another month to be sure, but would rather not have to lose any more souls than necessary, I'm already having trouble finding enough places to stash coffins. Thanks!

We're going to deal with any remaining issues with multi-species forts for this release

Will this release fix bug 4692?

On adding gay dwarves to DF:

Obviously, that'd be a touchy and controversial subject. It's a "hot" political and religious topic right now.

Haha, legal gay marriage might be controversial (in some places), but the existence of homosexuality is pretty well settled at this point, I think.

The "Readings" include all sorts of short texts and excerpts of longer texts, sometimes Internet stuff, but also poetry, court transcripts, speeches, short fiction, government pamphlets, corporate memos...generally off-beat, amusing or poignant, and offered with minimal commentary.

Not sure if anyone's posted this, but the O'Reilly DF guide was excerpted in Harper's Magazine's "Readings" in the March issue: http://harpers.org/archive/2013/03/high-low-high-low/

It seems sensible that goblins who have been very active snatchers/slave breeders who have large non-goblin populations do develop rather sizable slave farms to feed their masses.

Yeah, that was my thought on the matter, as well. It's not like the goblins have to start plowing the mud themselves. Slaves and all.

I think this is relevant:

Can you say a bit more about what sort of flavour each of the races will have? E.g. humans being similar to ancient Greece or Rome or to medieval times or the Renaissance or whatever; I hope you know what I mean

I'm trying not to do it like that -- ideally humans will end up with enough parameters to end up like various different civilizations, and the other civilizations will probably become more alien to humans as humans take up more of the slack.

Since having farms worked by slaves was a common characteristic of historical human civilizations, I imagine it would still not seem "alien" enough to fit with Toady's ultimate vision for goblins.

I think aside from the general medieval time period, Toady's goal is that the societies of non-human races should not resemble any historical human societies.

I remember this specifically in the discussion of whether goblins need to eat: some people suggested goblins could be nomadic herders patterned after historical Mongols, and his response was that goblins shouldn't act like Mongols because the game should be able to make human civilizations that look Mongolian. The impression I got was that the simulation should account for the full diversity of historical human societies, with non-human civilizations looking like something else entirely.

There several items on the dev expunging on players being tracked down and captured all that jazz.

I think you mean "expurgating."

plus it would let people create a semi-accurate simulation of D-Day

Seems like a weird design goal for a fantasy world simulator...

Well... There goes a few of my friends... Dang!

Kind of harsh dumping your friends just because they give up Dwarf Fortress.
