I'm finally back from vacation.  I got back yesterday to find that dwarf fortress apparently paused while I was gone.  I'm not sure why, since it is only supposed to shut the monitor off and lock the computer.  Either way, I let them continue running for a while and both crashed.  One was 1.9xx gigs and the other was 1.8xx gigs.  They always seem to crash around the same amount of memory usage.

Maybe with 31.04 if I get bored I'll give this another shot.  Busy for the time being though.

I just want to say that I'm extremely excited for zoom.  Many times when I'm showing my fortress off to friends or family (who also play, not just random ones :p) I often pine for the zoom ability so they could more easily see what I'm showing them.

Also I'm stealing this:
Toady Standard Time has no fixed relationship to UTC.

I find this strange.  On one occasion I had dwarves who I ordered to move just stand there but kill gets them moving.  I've even ordered them to kill wild animals just to get them on the surface...

Or you want more than about 3.5 gigs of usable memory.
DF is still 32-bit, a 64-bit OS won't help DF use any more memory.

If you have a 32 bit OS the system can only identify 4gigs worth of addresses minus everything else that is addressed on your system.  Leaving most systems with about 3.5 gigs.  I'm using 2.5 gigs idle which would leave with only 1 gig for any extra game/application.  Because I have 64 bit I have 8 gigs of addressable memory, and leaves a full 5.5 for anything extra I want to do such as DF.

/e: Dagoth.  That sounds great to me.  I use genesis and have been running vanilla for this experiment because I wasn't sure what the differences were in world gen and if many people even used genesis.  The current plan then is to run 3 instances.  The two I mentioned earlier and the one you brought up with genesis.  If they all max out at 2 gigs (hopefully they won't)  it will cause a little paging as I idle at 2.5 but it should have plenty of time to work it out.  I'm going to start one running right now and the other 2 when I leave tonight so that it will hopefully finish before the other 2 get towards the end and free up some memory before they need it.

/e2:  Last update before I go.  My genesis install is not able to find a suitable site for some reason.  It rejects about 500 and then gives me an error.  I'm not sure why.  It was doing so before when I was trying to get maps with really high magma chance, but I'm next to positive I set everything else back to normal.  So no genesis.  However the other 2 are still running and if this works out hopefully we can continue the thread and more ideas in a week.  Maybe .04 will even be out when I get back :)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: The Moses Effect and Aquifers
« on: May 15, 2010, 04:23:34 pm »
Disclaimer:  I'm not positive either way but here is my guess.

I don't believe you can mine right up to the edge of the map and so that last bit of aquifer would still let water flow in :(

Hopefully a more experienced player can verify or correct that statement.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: how often is the game updated?

OP, my dearest, I suggest you demand your money back and inform the media! This atrocity should not go unpinished!

Don't be a dick.

Hi!

Thank you, Draco18s for the verification. Too bad that is blocked at the moment.

Thank you for your testing, Tieme. Could you do exactly the same gen, only with less than half the number of civs? I want to see how reducing the number of civs and/or events will impact this. Thank you.

Deathworks

Yes.  Would love to.  It makes it much easier on me when you guys tell me exactly what you want :)

Here is the plan then:

1 world with the same params as I originally did but 5500 years.
1 world with the same params but half the number of civilizations.

Unless anyone else has any input.  Would be glad to hear it.

It just crashed :( :( :(

7197 years and 1,918,208 KB of memory used.

Over 6 million events and 200,000 historical figures.

Given this info, what do you guys want me to do next?

I could try re running with 6000-7000 years for a couple of instances (3 should be fine).

I'm leaving later today(in about 6 hours) so let me know what you guys want and I'll report back in a week.

Are you using a 32 bit operating system?
Yes, I am.  Wish I had 64bit but well...
Irrelevant until DF itself has a 64-bit executable.

Or you want more than about 3.5 gigs of usable memory.

Thanks!

I'm at 4300 using 1.4GB memory if anyone is curious.  I think it will be 2 generations at a time unfortunately :/

I have 8 gigs so hopefully I'll be able to run at least 2.  I'm just about to start a gen up and I'll report back with mem usage results.

/e: Params: 257x257 region
10000 end year (from 1050)
100000 population cap after civ creation (from 50000 i think)
Ignore percentage beasts dead for stoppage
0 titan number (from 33)

Just started running, very laggy but mem looks good.  Any advice if partial print will help world gen too?  I normally keep it off because my screen starts getting all messed up but would turn it on if you think it might help.  My guess is no since the screen doesn't update much at all anyways, I can't imagine partial print would save much work.

/e2:  Just an update because I'm bored.  It's year 350.  650MB of mem used.  That's up about 70 megs from when it started.  Will update again soon.

/e3:  Year 950, 850 megs used.  So far it's an increase of about 1 meg per 3 years.  If this holds for the whole simulation I should be able to do 2 of them.  We need to get Toady to add multi core support...

/e4:  Year 1340 with only 920 megs used.  That's a significant decrease in usage so hopefully it will continue to fall.

I'm not leaving for another day so I'll run a few tests before I start the generation.

I decided, in the name of Science!, that I'd try to generate a '257:257' world that would have a bit of history for me when I embarked.
10 000 years of history, in fact! I completely botched all megabeasts so that there would be no risk of them razing every civilization by year 2000... The World of Enchantments started to generate.

52 rejects, alright. Nothing to worry about. The 'recounting legends part, where the ages add up one after one, would be a bit tougher. It worked quite well up until 1700, where progress slowed down slightly. I eventually left the computer alone and went outside (!). When I came back, late-night-ish, it was on 2600. Damn. So I decided to leave it on while I slept to the sluggish drone of an overworked laptop. Incidentally, my good laptop is being repaired in some computer rehab in god know's where. So this ... five-year old laptop, defragmented to the point that not even it's own metaphorical mother would recognize it, carried on with the cumbersome task of creating this Old & Huge World.

I woke up after a good 13 hours of dreaming about gargantuan bees living in a world of heavy machinery, ...for some inexplicable reason. 3400? Oh yeah! I did feel a bit disheartened, but it went away when I experimented with using other programs while DF was running in the background. It worked! Success! I played a wee bit o' Morrowind, and finished Planescape: Torment. Two games I heavily recommend, by the by. I left the laptop alone for the rest of the day, and set the 'dwarffortress.exe' process to RealTime through Windows Task Manager. By the third day it had reached 6549: By the fourth it was 7108. The fifth; 7463. I could see that it wasn't marching forward anymore, it was more of a crawling close encounter with the floor. My laptop felt tired too, and so were I. I reasoned that I could let it go on a bit more, since Toady One hadn't released the update yet (And still hasn't! :c) By the seventh and final day I had to pull the plug from the laptop due to it going into some catatonic state where no input whatsoever seemed to affect it.

It was stuck on 8621. 86% complete. Damn. The experiment failed, the dream shattered. Oh well. What's your thoughts, feelings, threats? Have anyone done anything like this before, and are there saves?

I just happen to be going on vacation for the next week and would be willing to donate my spare CPU time to your endeavor.  PM me what you want for params and I'll set it to start genning.  I actually have a quad core and since DF only uses one I could easily set 3 or 4 running if you want to experiment with maybe 0,5,20,33 megabeasts or whatever you'd like.  This goes for everyone else as well.  PM me if you are interested in taking advantage of it.

Hopefully someone will take advantage of this, would love to see the ideas and the results!!

I believe that regions will be compatible in the new version (someone correct me if I'm wrong) so you can continue to use them in the future :)

How did you botch megabeasts?

In the world gen with parameters you can set megabeasts to zero.

DF General Discussion / Re: Abandoned mine tunnels

I live in the area where they were taken. Theres loads of that type of stuff aorund here, and we kind of take it for granted.

I'm lucky enough to have gone on 4 cross continent trips to see a variety of different places.  And as beautiful as all of it was, it also made me realize that I have just as beautiful locations locally, but like you said - we take it for granted.

Traveling is great, and I hope to continue doing it but if you take a minute to look at what is around you, you can discover many amazing things.

Ahaha.  I hope not :p

At least it would be a lot of fun if it does end up that way...
