Great comic, that's great haha  :D

Also, I picture the bronze colossus like the colossus from the beginning of God of War 2, if anyone has played that.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Pumping magma
« on: June 30, 2010, 08:05:12 pm »
Alright, I'll need magma safe mechanisms. I wouldn't have thought of that. So if I lock my doors in the event of a flood, this should stop Urist McFirehazard from opening a door and letting the whole fortress burn.

How does pump stacking work though? The first one needs to be placed on the same tile as the magma source and then another one built a z level above it on the same spot? Does a hole need to be channeled through each layer that has a pump on it?

Also, how do you power the pumps? I've seen people mention windmills and stuff, but I don't even know where to make those at. What other options besides windmills are there?

DF Gameplay Questions / Pumping magma
« on: June 30, 2010, 02:15:20 am »
So with my most recent fortress, I finally dug deep enough to strike the cavern layer, and feeling confident, I kept digging down, bypassed the next two cavern layers and found the magma sea. This was my first time finding magma, as I've only been playing a little over a month a few times a week. I felt a sense of accomplishment, even though back up top my fortress was in the grip of a category 5 tantrum spiral. Finally the levies on the dwarven sanities broke, and I had to evacuate.

However, this has led me to a few questions for my next encounter with magma. How do you manage to pump the fiery liquid upwards? I understand the basic idea of the screw pumps but I'm clueless on stacking them, and the wiki wasn't very clear on this.

Also, how do magma proof materials work? Will I need to make floodgates out of bauxite, etc? And will bauxite doors stop the magma from flooding my fortress if I have an engineering mishap? Thanks in advance.

You probably dug in through the roof and the dwarves are refusing to mindlessly leap down from the ceiling into the cave. I did the same thing. Just mine out a hallway or something into a part of the cave that's on the same level you are.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Military, Hospital and Burrows
« on: June 30, 2010, 01:45:00 am »
have you tried activating them via (s)quad - (m)ove then cancer (o)rder later?  sometimes it resets things.  also, do you have barracks setup?  just for comparison, I have 1 with bed and chests and armor stands/racks stuff set to ZIQ (sleep, indiv/squad equipment) and two other "sparring" barracks made up of one of each of armor stand and weapon rack, both set to Train.

This will probably work. On the squad screen there is a toggle to switch active to inactive and back. Try that and use it to set them to active, I can't remember what key it is but you should see it in the (s)quad menu. make sure to hit a to select the squad first. For me, as long as the squad is set to 'active' and the barracks allows for training, I have no problem with them doing individual training.

I have yet to see these drills and demonstrations these others speak of. I wonder if they are more effective at gaining skills than individual training.

Maybe make sure your burrow includes the dining room/meeting hall and places to sleep if they are going to be there for any amount of time? And for the military they seem to train just fine for me if I set the squad to active/training (but don't change the actual schedule to train), and have the barracks set to allow training.

I dunno about hospitals though, still haven't figured that out really. All my dwarves keep dying of thirst instead of getting stitched up and taken care of.

DF Suggestions / Re: Ui fund?
« on: June 29, 2010, 11:45:03 am »
Game features > Improved UI or GUI.

I can tolerate the UI for the sake of gameplay myself, otherwise I wouldn't be playing this game in the first place. If the UI bothers people so badly, why are they still playing and donating? I don't think a DF clone project could really steal the fanbase that badly anyway. It'd probably end up being a watered down, crappy version with a flashy UI and mouse support, undeserving of a donation for lack of originality.

That's probably the reason that Toady doesn't export the UI, go open-source, or bring in outside help is because he doesn't want someone to pull a Bill Gates on him and make DorfWindows Fortress.

Hey guys, the guy did ask for a guide on the military.

I've tried reading the wiki but it is a lot of information with a lot of warnings about bugs.  I was hoping someone would be able to provide a very simple "here's how you kill things and train/equip your dwarfs" guide that works most of the time despite the current bugs.

I'm a new player too, and I think I've worked out how to use some of the military screen, but a simplified guide would be a big help for me as well.

Wouldn't be surprised if the farming mud drying up was intentional. It makes sense to me that mud would dry up after a few years..

DF General Discussion / Dwarf Management?
« on: June 07, 2010, 12:26:06 am »
Well, I'm new to this game, and while I was looking through various Wikis and guides for getting started playing DF, I came across a couple of different links for dwarf management third party utilities. The problem is, with all the links, they were at least a year out of date and none worked with my current version of DF.

Do any of you know a place where I can get updated versions of either Dwarf Foreman or Dwarf Manager, or similar programs? Preferably ones that work with 31.03?

I think I'll just stick to the version I have now, scrambled military system or no. Although I do hope sometime soon it is improved. For now though, I'm content just learning the game instead of bothering with what features are in what versions.

And the wooden spikes sounds like a great idea. I don't know much about the traps and mechanism combinations that are possible, but that sounds simple enough to start with. Pressure plates at the entrance is what I was planning on doing.

And this really is a great game. I love that it's so complex and difficult to master, and the possibilities seem endless. A masterpiece of a game, to be sure. I agree with TDSS, gonna send in a donation when I have the money to spare.

I'm new to the game too, just started playing a few days ago and I agree. It's freakin' amazing. I just downloaded the version off the download section of the website, 31.03 it says. Seems to work fine for me, and I'm runnin' with the mayday pack. The graphics packs really do help when you're just getting into the game.

The only real trouble I've had so far is the military screen is extremely confusing, and I've had a group of monkeys running into my fortress and stealing my stuff. Trying to learn how to use mechanisms to fix this and to prepare for the inevitable invasion..Not gonna that off though. Losing is fun, right?  ???

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Mundane Enemy, Epic Battle
« on: June 04, 2010, 06:01:44 am »
I just started playing Dwarf Fortress a few days ago, and tried out adventurer mode last night. I was in awe at the brutality of my first epic battle...against a defenseless fox. First it was smaked broadside with my sword in the head, had a back leg chopped off, front paw followed shortly, then I stabbed it through the throat. At this point, some how the fox started to put up a fight, hitting me once, and then again as I twisted the sword in its throat. Then I pulled the sword free, chopped off its ear, and it bled to death.

I felt bad for the poor critter..but after that massacre I can't wait to see how battles against real enemies turn out.

I just stick to the booze, but maybe I should consider drinking water for the injured at least...still though, booze would make a great painkiller and dwarfs don't get dehydrated from drinking it all the time anyway.
