DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dwarf Fortress Video Tutorial *NEW DFLP2011*

Hi Captain Duck.
Love the new videos.  My husband recommended that I watch your tutorial back when I was first learning to play and they helped so much.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

Its the 6th of Timber, 263 in Beardedrings.  This is the 12th year of the Fortress.  After the first two migration waves I sealed off the entrance and called off any future migration.  We've currently  a population of 33, 18 adults and the rest are children.

There are now seven couples married, hopefully the start of seven clans that will have their own warrens in the future:
The Blackhollows, the Steelskins, the Rivenoaks, the Netherstones, the Hellforges, the Bloodhands, and the Bronzebeards.

We've managed to wall off the top elevation of the map which includes a large forested area where we keep the tame herds of cougars and racoons.  We've also managed to tap into a volcano for our magma workshops.

I'm trying not to dig out more than I have to until the existing stone and ore is processed.

Similar to DNA, Deer N/A are the building blocks of deer.

And I don't have a justice system since among almost 150 dwarves there's not a single one who has any skill needed to be Chief of the Guard......
I barely pay attention to skills unless they are legendary.  Just assign some dwarf who is not working and let him or her get on-the-job-training.  I've learned to just assign a wooden training weapon to the the Chief of the Guard to carry out justice so justice isn't a big deal.

DF General Discussion / Re: Any girls, women play DF?
« on: March 10, 2011, 11:18:47 pm »
I mostly play mmorpg type games when I play something on the computer but I do know how to play Dwarf Fortress and I play it sometimes.  Playing or not playing a game has nothing to do with femininity.  I would guess that the learning curve is what holds most people back whether they are male or female.  Anyway, I know at least one other woman who plays Dwarf Fortress and I know lots of other women who play online games.

Well what I do is replace all, and then I type in the full new name for each dwarf.  So when I type in the name, I type the first, a space and the last.  This means you have to take time to do it each time there is a new birth and during each migration wave if you want everyone to start off with their own custom name.

I've encountered dwarves from a previous abandoned fort in some human ruins where I was starting a new fort.  Awkward! ;) This was with 31.12 or maybe a little before that but definitely with DF2010.  In Legends I've seen dwarves from an old fortress stay at the same site and just change their group name.

Not a mod but what I do if I am planning to have generations of dwarves at the same fort is to rename them and give them family names.  When they marry I change the last name of the wife and all the new babies get the right last names.  Its easy to see the lineage that way.  In one of the init files, there is an option to have nicknames replace first and last names.

I always figured "oliphaunt" was just what the hobbits called elephants because they were so secluded in the Shire and they were just fairy tales as far as they were concerned.  A word they heard from a traveler long ago which got distorted in the retelling.  The movie took  Sam's imagination as literal.

My brother never made me any magmamen.   :(

Once I discovered that you can replace all of their names with some options in the d_init file, I started always giving them last names and changing last names when they marry.  Its kinda fun to watch the families grow and be able to more easily see the lineage.

Good luck on your fort!

I have things called scarlet lady, flame bell, shepherd's blessing, glorycap, and bronzecap.  If any of these are flowers I have them but I can't be sure if I harvested them or got them from the dead caravans.

EDIT: I do know for a fact I was able to harvest some things.  Before any caravans arrived I was able to plant Whip vines and prickle berries.
