DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Armor questions
« on: May 04, 2011, 07:58:03 am »
I ran a 10 vs. 10 setup in the area 10 times, both sides decked out in steel helm, plate, chain, gauntlet, greaves, high boots, axes, were grandmaster fighters + axe + armor users. One side additionally had an elephant leather robe. The side with the robe didn't win any more than the side without. If anything, the side without the robe actually won a little more but the endings always turned into a 3 vs. 2 or 2 vs. 1 with who got a lucky strike. Didn't try with any other weapons. Should the tests be done with different skill levels/combinations of skills as well? Would reducing the armor user mastery give units with more armor a bigger penalty?

DF Gameplay Questions / Armor questions

I'm trying to figure out if it's really necessary to equip military dwarves with clothing underneath their armor. I know you can get crazy and have like 3 suits of chain mail with 10 cloaks or something, but does it really have an effect?

From reading the wikia, it looks like chain mail is the only way to get armor on the shoulders/upper arm? There's also no eye protection, except maybe cloaks/robes? Is leather or cloth better protection as far as non-metal armor goes? (I assume leather, but I don't see any ranking for the two) Does quality of leather/armor decide how well it protects? If an attack manages to get through the steel high boot somehow, is there really a point to having the dorf wear socks?

Could someone tell me what the savegame_updater.bat does? It looks like it replaces the raws in the data/save/current folder with the raws in the phoebus archive? I've never actually installed the graphic set myself, it was done for me in the LazyNewb pack. And in the LazyNewb pack, there aren't any raws in the data/save/current folder, so I'm a little confused. I'm just trying to figure out how to do it myself now, when the 31.11 version gets released.

Thanks

So with every update, is it the same story: copy over my save folder and move over those 3 raws? Or were those 3 raws specifically because of this update? If so, should I just replace the whole raw folder in the save with the raw folder from the new version of DF?

Thanks!

I just started playing recently, the LazyNewbPack made it easy for me to avoid learned to read the ASCII and just play. But what I downloaded was 31.08, and there's new stuff out now. Is there a way to move the fortress to 31.10 (and future iterations), or do I just have to plain restart with every update? Is it as easy as moving the data/save folder from one version to the next, or are there other things that should change as well? Thanks.
