I've finally got it installed but it seems to have had an odd effect on my graphics pack. Whenever I open up the Bentgirder save my dwarfs are all little red and yellow blobs and the animals are all the letters of the"plain" version of the game rather than the sprites i've installed. Odder still is the fact that this problem isn't occuring whenever I open my other save ???. Why is this happening? something to do with my version of the game or the graphics pack*?

*I am using the Lazy Newb Pack which has the Phobeus graphics installed by default if that helps.

First off sorry about my confusing use of file and folder interchangably I didn't really proof-read my posts. Now i've managed to use 7-zip on the file I downloaded. I now have another folder called data in my save folder. In this folder is the "save" folder and in that is the region0 folder.

So basically I have in my *DF directory*\data\save folder: The folders containing the data for my current save and the folder I got from extracting the file I downloaded using 7-zip which is named data for some reason, and in this is another folder( the "other" save folder) which in turn has the region0 folder in it. Did I fuck this up or is it just a matter of placing this "second" save folder in the appropriate place?

I managed to extract the file contents to the save file but I still can't play Bentgirder. It's set up exactly how you specified but still no change.

I've been reading a bit of your tutorial and it looks like a fairly good intro for a new player such as myself. However, i've been having a lot of trouble getting the fortress/world file properly installed. Is the download meant to only include the one file? someone suggested moving the file to the save folder in the data folder but I still couldn't use the save. I'm not really sure what the hell i'm doing.

The thing is the bentgirder download doesn't come in a folder for some reason. The only thing you download is the world/fortress (or whatever you'd call it) file itself. Or at least, that's what happens when I've downloaded it. I tried putting just the file into the save folder but it didn't do anything.

Because i've only recently began to play Dwarf Fortress the other day I decided to install the pre-generated tutorial world/fortress Bentgirder* to help me learn the basics of the game. The instructions given for installing the file said to just unzip it in my Dwarf Fortress directory and it would be ready to play. However, when I opened up the game I couldn't acess Bentgirder, only the fortress i'd already begun. Was there a specific place I should have extracted the file to? Do I need to delete my previous world in order to play the one i've installed?

I'm not sure what you mean by that. Do you mean that Mayday is semi-incompatible with the current version of the game? Should I just switch back to using Phoebus ?

I did run the save game updater but I haven't looked at the text files yet.The last time I tried to modify the tilesize that way I didn't really know what I was doing. Does Mayday have settings reccomended for more detail? . I'd like to be able to see this much detail in each of the tiles:

this is about as far as I can zoom in currently:

How up to date with the latest version of the game is Mayday though? does it actually matter?

I've been playing the Lazy newb pack version of the game and I decided to install the mayday graphics because I prefer the way they looked in comparison to phoebus(the default tileset for the newb pack). However when I went back into the game after replcaing the appropirate files I couldn't zoom in as far and the replacement tiles were tiny. Do I need to increase the size of the tiles? if so, how?

14
I managed to manually replace the files instead. disregard my previous post.

I tried installing mayday instead of phobeus by following the instructions on the front page but all it did was change the tile colour of my dwarfs and replace all the animals with the letters that represent them. What exactly did I do wrong?*

*It also messed up the save game updater until I restored the raw folder >:(
