DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / are siege engines useful in DF2012?

Per subject line, does anybody know?

In DF2010 I had limited luck with them...specifically a legendary siege operator using a ballista of only masterwork pieces made my a legendary siege engineer firing a masterwork steel-tipped arrowhead would routinely fire on a ~45 degree angle to the ballista...he couldn't hit targets 10 tiles away, much less 150. I'm hoping this is better in DF2012.

Also note that you can use prospector on the embark screen now to get an idea of what's actually present in the selected biome.

Hi folks, maybe this is more of a worldgen question, I'm not sure. I'm basically looking for a very particular embark site on my next fortress. I want to be producing most things of steel (even furniture) in the fortress, so iron and flux are a must. I've read from the wiki that the best way to get iron is to search for shallow metals. I also want a relatively flat piece of land (preferably totally flat and uninteresting), a ton of trees, and water of some kind (aquifer or river). I've gone through maybe 12 embarks now and can't find what I'm looking for (using prospect in dfhack to check for the iron). I'm just curious if there's anything else people can recommend in the way of worldgen parameters or other things to get the site I'm looking for. I've tried turning down the mineral rarity already to 750 without much luck.

Also, a bit of a digression...I found a site that had several marble layers, but was NOT listed as having flux in the world view. Is this a bug or is marble no longer a flux stone?


Edit: I forgot to mention, some form of evil (haunted, maybe) is preferred. I'm also very open to embarking on a desert landscape and creating a subterranean tree farm, so trees are not necessarily required.

Also possible is that you decided to take all the booze, plant seeds, and plant matter available with you. Once you have selected every item in a category the category is no longer shown on the new item screen, which means you may have ferhoodled our minds and eyes.

Indeed this is not the case.

I think it may have something to do with the caverns - I decreased the number of caverns in this one to 1. I genned another world with 0 caverns and there was indeed no booze - and this time no plants or seeds either. Looks like dwarves in that land are carnivores. A third try and there were two booze types available.

Just today I had a dwarf take over a craft workshop. He needed a LOT of bones (3 animals worth), some giant spider silk cloth, two stones, and three gems.

I went through pains to ensure the stones he used were platinum nuggets, and the gems were my three best at the time - star sapphires. I had to venture into the underground to harvest the silk and have somebody spin it. I lost three animals, as I mentioned.

For my toil:
Thebilalen, Silkymoths, a donkey bone earring
This is a donkey bone earring. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality.
Value: 1200.  :'(

Shame you aren't in a biome with undead. Silver hammers are awesome imo. :)
