That thing looks very neat, very cool design! Too small for my spidery fingers though. It reminds me of those tiny GBAs you could get.

Well, I ended up buying a Wii U Pro pad which should arrive on the 9th for pretty cheap . If it doesn't work out, then I'll just get a Logitech controller.

I realise not many people have talked about the Wii controllers, but I was won over by how attractive it is. I am an awful shopper, even after days of research. :(

I didn't notice any lag with my wireless F710 controller versus a wired 360 controller. The first article I found on the subject suggests a 4-8 ms additional input lag from the wireless transmission, though I don't see any sources for that. A more interesting article, with actual test explanations and results, suggests that the average console game has input lag of at least 67 ms and often variance of up to 133 ms, so 4-8 ms is almost entirely irrelevant.

That's good to know, you never know when people on the internet are exaggerating about their problems or whether they expect perfection. I'm not sure how relevant the article about consoles is, but if it is relevant, then even 133ms sounds negligible to me. I would hope it is. I suppose the main issue would be comfort and ease then.

Started looking around myself. Looking online I discovered that getting a Bluetooth Dongle would allow me to use my Wii Classic Controller. So been using that...

I am very interested in your experiences with the Wii Classic controller! Any issues at all?

I have a Logitech F710 and I've been pretty disappointed with the signal strength. Anything in between the controller and the receiver (such as my knees, a desk, the computer itself) results in horrible lag, as does being more than three feet from the receiver. A lot of people even say they tape their receiver (it comes with a little USB extension cord) to the controller to make it a wired controller. I actually really like the buttons though.

I've seen some other people saying their F710's were also abominable in terms of signal strength, and some people say it's no problem, but it seems like most people who returned their controllers for another one didn't get any improvement. I feel like compared to a console controller, it's amazing how poor the reception is. You may have also seen some people complaining of dead zone- I have not had that problem and I think that it's just misattributed signal lag.
Agreed on the F710's signal strength. Turns out there's a reason the tiny dongle is provided with a long USB extension cord; you need that thing on your desk if you want to use it. On the other hand, the battery life seems to be really long. Which may be related to the terrible signal strength.  ;)

Not sure about dead zone issues on the F710 controller, though. I just tried it with the Dolphin configuration tool, and it seemed to be detecting even the slightest movement of the analog sticks. That said, the sticks are slightly 'sticky' - you need to apply slightly more force to move them from rest than you'd expect, which might be reported as a dead zone issue. And the sticks have a convex top instead of the concave design of my 360 controller, which makes them feel slightly harder to control (maybe compounding the static friction problem...).

I definitely want to be more than 3 feet away! Thanks for your input on the F710, since it was a controller I was considering. I don't think it would be any good if it has problems with objects being in the way since we have dogs in our house. Sounds like it would be a good controller to have at your desk though.

Huh, wireless controllers for your PC, really? How far are you sitting from your computer? Or are you hooked up on your TV?

If I were to be using controllers, I'd probably sitting anywhere from 1ft to 8ft away depending I've got it connected to the TV or whether it's in my room. I want to use it in both scenarios. Generally, I don't think I'd be more than 4ft away though. I'm not opposed to wired controllers at all, as long as the wire is long enough.

I have an F510. It's the same thing as the F710 except it's corded so you don't have to deal with batteries or any other nonsense (and it's cheaper). One thing that's neat is the switch on the back that allows to you switch between D-input and X-input, which means the controller can act as a generic plug-and-play controller where you can also set custom inputs for various programs, or switch to X-input where the computer will recognize the controller as an Xbox controller with rumble functionality.

I like the controller, it's pretty similar to a dualshock controller except the triggers are pretty bad. Instead of being wide like on a dualshock there's a plastic bit that comes down the controller that the triggers protrude from, and the triggers are pretty narrow. On a dualshock I can easily press the triggers but on the Logitech you kinda have to curve your finger around that little plastic bit in order to get at them, and coupled with the stiffer triggers (driving games where you hold the triggers will tire your finger very easily) is a pretty strange designs decision.

The location of the analog sticks doesn't matter so much to me, I've used both an Xbox and dualshock and I could get used to either position, but if it;'s really a problem there's a controller made by Cyborg I believe that allows you to swap which position the left analog stick and the D-pad are in, but I don't know how well that company can be trusted given my joystick from them is pretty cheaply made.

As for the D-pad itself, it is pretty strange. On a dualshock the d-buttons are very close to the frame and they're almost like buttons, but the design makes pressing diagonally pretty strange. I forget what the Xbox controller is like since I don't have one in front of me, but on the Logitech the D-pad is all one plastic casing kinda raised up from the controller. This normally wouldn't be so bad, except it seems like you have to press pretty far down on the directional before an input is registered. This is very bad if you need to double-tap directional buttons. Diagonals feel good though.

I like the buttons on the controller. I am most familiar with the playstation/dualshock button layout, so it is very handy to have Xbox style buttons I can look down and refer to since most games seem to use those.

Hey, interesting stuff. This is a better review of a controller than I've seen on most reviewing websites!
It's been a few years since I last used a dualshock but I vaguely recall the layout being uncomfortable, I imagine this is probably just one of those things one gets used to though, enough people use dualshocks, so the design can't be that bad. Unfortunately, double-tapping on controllers is something I want to be able to to easily, so I guess I can rule out the F510. Thanks.
I had looked at some Cyborg controllers, but they were obscenely expensive. I'm not paying over £99 for a single controller!

The D-Pad on a 360 controller has the same plastic cover as the F710 (and, I'd assume, the F510). The main difference is, when you press on the F710, you can feel actual buttons under the casing - there's an audible 'click' and the matching tactile feedback. The 360 controller has much less in the way of resistance, so it feels much smoother but is considerably less responsible during gameplay.

...damn, before this thread I'd given very little thought to the differences between controllers. You guys are making me do work for my daily posting quota.  :P

Hah, last time I looked I was on 0.07 posts per day. I'm sure that number is skyrocketing thanks to this thread. Controllers are serious business!

I've owned a logitech F310 for a few months now and I'm pretty happy with it. It's perfect for platforming games, the D-pad is great. The triggers need to be pushed in a bit further than feels normal and at first it's a bit off putting but once you're used to it is easy enough to compensate for. The main weakness of that controller is its analogue sticks. I can't aim for shit with them. It's fine for 3D action games like Dark Souls or Darksiders 2. It's pretty sub-par for FPS games though. Any game that requires fast precise aiming I've given up on playing  them with the controller.

One of the nice features of the F310 is that it has switch that lets you change modes. This allows the controller to be recognized as an Xbox 360 controller making it compatible without any set up for a lot of recent games with controller support.

I can't imagine why you'd play a FPS with a controller rather than a mouse! I tried playing dead island on my friend's X-Box, but I really couldn't get over how slow and imprecise the analogue sticks were compared to a mouse. The F310 sounds like a great controller other than that small matter though.

At the moment, I'm considering getting a F310 and a Wii U Pro or just 2 Wii U Pros. Hopefully Neyvn can impart some of his experiences with the classic controller today, because I think I'll make my decision by the end of this day.

I've been looking at the Wii U controller, and it looks pretty nice. Does anyone have experience with the amount of lag one gets using wireless controllers? Would it be negligible or not?

The usefulness of Plug-and-Play depends entirely on how comfortable you are screwing around with drivers or third-party software. If you don't mind fiddling with (or buying) a third-party system, then don't worry too much about it. On the other hand, it's nice that, for instance, I can hit one button on my 360 controller, and instantly all the prompts in (for example) Batman: Arkham City switch from keyboard controls to XBox buttons.  :)

I don't imagine myself minding fiddling around with software. In my imagination it's just the case of opening an .exe or a text file and setting certain keys to buttons on the controller. Is it a lot more complicated than this?

The Steam Controller is still pretty far from release - the only date Valve's given is "next year", and this is Valve we're talking about. If you want a controller now, the Steam Controller isn't too useful.

Ah, thanks for the info. I don't think I'll be waiting for that one then.

Ultimately, try out a few controllers. Do you have any friends with PS3s or 360s? There's no point dropping $60 on a controller that you've never held.  :D

This is my problem! I know people with X-Box 360s and Wiis (and I would quite like to have more than 2 buttons!), but that's about it. I really don't want to regret my decision, so I hope I can be informed by other people's experiences.

You're right about the XBox 360's DPad - it's terrible, period. On the other hand, pretty much everything besides the D-Pad is useful. And it's plug-and-play on PC, with most major game releases supporting it right out of the box. The analog sticks are well-done, and might work well on a platformer.

I don't know how appealing being able to "plug and play" really is, is it so difficult to configure a controller to play with a game? If it is, I might consider the 360 pad, but I still find the poor reviews of it's d-pad quite off-putting.

I also have a Logitech wireless controller (F710). The D-Pad is a little better, IMO, but it's still not amazing. It's got a Dualshock-esque analog placement, which I frankly find uncomfortable and awkward. (I don't have a WiiU and have never touched their controller, but I think I'd prefer their layout with the analogs near the top.) My F710 also has very stiff triggers, and I have a tough time using the analog buttons... though I've never found a controller where the analog buttons were really convenient, so that might not be an issue with the F710 in particular.

I didn't consider the Wii U controller, it looks pretty nice... It's a shame about your Logitech, since I was leaning towards that for analogue control.

Honestly, if you're looking for a 2D platform controller... consider waiting for the Steam Controller. It looks weird as heck, but the Meat Boy dev used it and gave it a moderate approval. If you're interested in controllers for 2D platformers, hearing directly from the mouth of Meat Boy's main developer is probably the best feedback you'll get - he has a lot to say with regards to the Steam Controller versus the XBox 360 controller.

This looks very cool. And very expensive. Any idea when it comes out? I would have to read more reviews before considering it.

I have a Logitech USB controller, the one you have in the link.  It's worked for several years without incident.  The only problem I ever had with it was configuring some drivers or something; it's been a while.

That doesn't sound so bad. Thanks for the response!

I'm not sure how well this will apply to anyone else but I found using the XBox 360 controller's left half with my left hand while using my keyboard's number pad with my right hand to work very well. The 360 controller has far too few buttons on the right half for my liking.

The 360's left and right triggers are set up like opposite directions on a single joystick axis so they can't be used at the same time.

Unless you need joystick input or just really want a controller I'd suggest using a standard keyboard and WASD+Number Pad for controls

That sounds like a very interesting set up! The reason I want to buy some controllers though is so that I can play with people in the living room and I think using a keyboard in that situation would be cumbersome.

For a couple of days now I've been researching into PC controllers, the last one I bought was about 16 years ago and I don't really know what I'm doing. I want two controllers, one solely for 2D platformers (which I will probably use the most) and the other... Also for 2D platformers, but preferably with an analogue stick in case something 3D catches my eye.

I would have thought looking for controllers would be fairly easy, but it seems to me that everyone is using an X-Box 360 controller, which apparently has a bad d-pad and is no good for me. The other popular one is the Sega Saturn controller, but I'd worry how responsive this would be considering I would have to use an adapter. Lastly, I came across Logitech's Gamepads, which generally have good reviews, but at this point I would like to hear about other people's experiences.

What are your favourite game controllers for PCs? How is the responsiveness and comfort? How long did they last?

Ah, I did use Mod Organiser for some of the mods but not for others (I had discovered it a little after I had already installed some), so that could be the problem.
If I edited those .pex files or reinstalled Skyrim do you think the problem might become fixed or will it be linked to the specific save file?

I have a bunch of mods (perhaps I shouldn't, but I always end up doing this), I'll list them in order of lowest to highest priority:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This is a very long list, so I doubt that anyone will root through that if a mod is the problem. It'd be pretty nice though. I don't know what some of these mods actually do, I just looked at a recommended mods list.
I tried disabling SPERG, Deadly Dragons and both Skyrim Immersive Creatures mods because I think these may affect dragons but nothing changed.

Edit: Okay, I disabled every single mod except the official ones, the unofficial patches and SkyUI (Jesus Christ I had no idea this game had such an abysmal UI without this mod) but the problem still persists... :\
Could the problem be load order or something? I don't know anything about that.

Just recently got this game and I seem to be spending a ridiculous amount of time playing!

I was wondering if people could help me with a bug (maybe two?) that I've encountered:
When I go to loot the corpse of a dragon, I don't absorb their soul- to progress past the first dragon fight I had to input some complicated console command and every dragon since I've simply put in the command "player.modav dragonsouls 1"; this isn't a big problem.
The big problem is I can't progress past the fight with Miraak because he can't absorb the dragon souls either, so the corpses of the dragons just flop to the ground and he freezes in place because I guess for the script to continue he needs to absorb a soul or something. I've literally done everything the wiki recommends regarding this bug but nothing works, the only way to progress I've found is to use the console to set the quest as finished but then the fight music never stops and it's pretty annoying.

Anyone know what I can do?

General Discussion / Buying from US Amazon from Outside USA
« on: May 26, 2013, 03:49:51 am »
According to many guides on the internet, buying from US Amazon for downloadable content is as easy as changing your address but for some reason I just can't seem to figure it out.
I've tried a few times now, using two different debit cards and 2 different US addresses (one of which is a made-up Borderlinx address), but I always receive a message saying that I need to enter a new card number or edit it. Both cards definitely work.
I e-mailed Amazon about it and received the response:
"Hello,

I'm sorry for the inconvenience caused.

I've looked into your order, and it appears there's a problem with the payment information. The current payment method listed for your purchase is your Visa card.

After some research, I've confirmed that you're trying to use a non U.S. payment method for this order. Since Amazon Games & Software Downloads are only available to U.S. customers, a U.S. credit card is needed to be entered to verify a U.S. billing address. "

Can anyone help me solve this problem?

I'm trying to buy the amazing Crusader Kings II deal if anyone is wondering. :)

Never played it. My first Elder Scrolls game was Oblivion

Get Morrowind. It is the best Elder Scrolls game. You only get to learn about made-up foreign cultures, but as a person who plays games, you have been missing out on one of the best.

@Pakhawaj: Like HoI2, I've heard it's better than the game I play, but haven't gotten around to getting it. Probably would have suggested it myself if I played it, considering how much I hear people making brainlove to it.

I think Europa Universalis III (with expansions) is better game than II, I just found II to be a lot more immersive which seems to be what Neonivek is after.

If you're going to recommend a Europa Universalis game wouldn't II make more sense than III given that it's a lot more historical?
The time period covered in Europa Universalis II is modern rather than ancient but it still gives a good historical perspective of things, and you will learn a lot. Try it out, it's pretty old so it's probably very cheap now (maybe even free?) and download the AGCEEP mod for even more historical events- particularly in Asia.

I wish Chinese companies would translate more games into English, there have been quite a few games set in the Three Kingdoms period that've interested me but there's no way I'm tackling all those squiggles.
If you can read Chinese (and you're watching a Chinese let's play, so it is possible!) play Legend of Wulin Heroes, it looks so interesting, but it's so text driven that there's no way I could play it. :(

Edit: Just read the second page and you already mention it, haha. What are the chances. :)

I'm creating a small mod which creates a Nubian culture because it's one of my favourite areas to play with in the game and I think it's silly that Nubians are just lumped in with Ethiopians despite having a very different culture.
I'd like some help with a couple of things:

1.) Finding names of Nubian female nobility. I could easily just copy from the Greek list of female names but I think that'd be a tad boring and I could potentially lose out on some interesting African names.

2.) Location the file which equates one name to another, for example- Yahya:John. I'm almost certain this file exists (it used to at least in the very early builds) but I can't find it for the life of me, I'm probably just being dim.

If anyone would like to help, I'd be appreciative.
Also, these are the male names I have of the moment, all are taken from either Kings, high ranking nobility or high ranking priests, I also have one or two commoner names in there just because I thought they sounded cool. If there are any inconsistencies with spelling (I've tried to use Greek Latin spelling as opposed to Old Nubian-Latin since this is what Nubian Kings in the history file use) please call me out on it if you can!

Code: [Select]

}

I'm also unsure whether "Ourouêl" is just a variant of "Orounkouda", I'd get rid of it, but I'd like to have at least more than three lines of names. Anyone here a scholar from 11th century Nubia and willing to help me out?

Edit: Figured it out. :s
