I honestly can't say I've ever seen anyone undertake a project quite like this one.  But you are right in saying it should be both awesome and disturbing.  Please do keep photographic record of your progress.

It might not be all the advice you'll get on the Internet, but it is very likely the best you'll get.  Don't mess with what could potentially be a serious issue.  Get a competent diagnosis from a doctor and follow the prescribed treatment plan.  I realize none of us will make it out alive, but there's no sense cutting your lifetime short.

Your opportunity sounds exciting.  That is a part of the world I have never visited and would like to see it at some point in time.  Obviously your studies are most important, but being able to tour the countryside with citizens of Japan will be a tremendous bonus.  You will get to see things the regular tourists will miss.
