Other Games / Re: Steam/Valve Cracking Down on Regional Gifts/Trading
« on: December 20, 2013, 03:15:40 pm »
Disappointing. As a person that owns 500+ games on steam, in the past couple years I've been coming to regret a lot of purchase decisions on it as a platform. Overall I'm satisfied with how Steam functions despite it's quirks here and there, but it's really just the fact that I've got digital titles attached to a single "user" account that makes me worry. If anything should happen to Steam, whether simple policy changes or complete shutdown of the platform, it's the consumers that pay the price. This is one of the big factors that's kept me a firm console supporter- PC games have no resale value (even if they are physical copies, there's very little market for selling). If I purchase a console game it'll be the same price on release as a digital copy, but I have the option of selling it for anywhere from 25-60+ percent of it's value when I choose to be done with it.

Other Games / Re: Your Gaming Setup for 2014 and beyond
« on: December 20, 2013, 02:34:54 am »
PC, PS4, PSVita, 3DS, and PS3. I'm set for all the gaming consoles I'll be buying for the next...  5+ years minimum I think (not including a couple of PC upgrades; mine's already slipping down into the low-end). Sony and Microsoft aren't going to push a new console for at least 6 or 7 which looks like the current trend. Both the Xbox 360 and PS3 are still very much active and have new game releases coming well into fall of 2014, and I don't think people are going to make a significant new push to the current gen until prices come down and the software starts piling up. As for the WiiU, well... It's definitely Nintendo's game to lose, and if they don't make some miracle marketing ploy for the WiiU that rejuvenates some interest in the platform I could definitely see Nintendo switching to some new hardware in the next 3 or 4 years. It's kind of irrelevant to me though, I don't plan to buy any of them any time soon. Don't get me wrong, I love Nintendo and I would definitely play a WiiU if I wasn't already utterly swamped with games to play.

All that really leaves is handhelds, which are kind of on their own flow. I only get a new handheld like... maybe once every other generation? Even less than that depending on where my personal interests are at a given time. They tend to endure through generations much better than consoles, and they even tend to have a much larger selection of "gotta play" software, which is kinda interesting.

It's hard for people to offer decent suggestions when you're so limited by what you can play. Moby Games is one of the most robust game databases I've ever seen, and I think you'd have a lot better luck utilizing it's search definitions to find something that appeals to you.

Life Advice / Re: Monitor Recommendations for Cyber Monday
« on: November 16, 2013, 02:59:22 pm »
Not sure what kind of price range you're looking for, but I got a dell ultrasharp u2412m and I'm extremely pleased with it. I did quite a bit of research when I was looking to replace a broken monitor last year and settled on that model as the (relatively) cheapest option to get a monitor using IPS panel technology. All the Ultrasharp monitors appear to be a pretty solid choice at first glance, but if you pick one out I'd definitely recommend looking into reviews just to make sure there are no better alternatives.

...I was about to comment on how I didn't see any pack for the Mechromancer class, only the Psycho Pack. Then I noticed it has 34 total DLC. Wow.

So anyway, Borderlands 2 + Season Pass + the Psycho pack+ mechromancer pack and it all totals to three dollars less than the default Borderlands 2 game on a normal not sale day. Steam sales, man. Must be some kind of magic.
I hadn't played BL2 since around their second DLC or so, and noticed someone complaining that it had terrible DLC practices. I thought to myself; "Are you serious? Each DLC is at least 10 extra hours of gameplay!"

Then I looked at the DLC list and saw so much garbage. What the hell Gearbox?

Sleeping Dogs is basically just GTA: Asian Edition, as people said. It's not a bad game by any means, but I personally wouldn't give it a great recommendation when there are so many other games that are more worthy of playing (and usually at a lower price-point).

Related yet admittedly off-topic, I hugely recommend the True Crime series which Sleeping Dogs is the spiritual successor, despite the fact that it has virtually none of the mechanics that made the original series such a dynamic entry to the sandbox genre.

Life Advice / Re: Dealing with Schizophrenia
« on: July 11, 2013, 05:29:06 am »
I've been diagnosed with schizophrenia as well, and I've got a pretty good idea of how you may feel with that issue in doing... Pretty much anything. Sadly, it's still an issue I struggle with daily, though it's certainly gotten better over time as I learn to deal with it. Very slowly, very gradually, and still very frustrating.
I've been diagnosed with Schizophrenia

Would you clarify? What are your symptoms? Preferably from your point of view rather than what you've been told.

To not go into extreme detail, I have trouble doing stuff. Not being able to get up to feed myself and such. Being motivated, so to say.
You should try to go into more detail if you can. There is more than a single "type" of schizophrenia, and a fairly wide range of symptoms that aren't necessarily always present in a person. As far as help goes, all I can really offer is the same advice I give anyone with just about any type of mental health issue- seek a psychiatrist if you haven't already. If you've been diagnosed it was probably a psychiatrist that diagnosed it in the first place, but I really can't stress how important it is to see a professional on a regular basis, even if money or insurance is an issue. It should absolutely be your top priority, as well as the priority of your parents/guardian. The earlier you get help, the better you will be able to cope in the long term. Medication isn't the only way to cope, but I strongly believe it's the least destructive route: my father managed to find some semblance of normality through trial and error of different mental techniques to calm his mind and reign in his irrational thinking, though that took a good 40+ years and a multitude of ruined relationships, jobs, and likely enough mental anguish to crush the average person's soul.

Personally, I've found medication to make a very noticeable difference in the way I think, the way I feel, the way I communicate, listen, and engage with people. It's not perfect by any means, I'm still a very awkward and eccentric person, but it helps break down a few bricks in the indescribable fourth-dimensional-esque social barriers that always inhibit my behavior when dealing with people, regardless of whether it's face-to-face, on the phone, over the internet etc. It took me roughly 8 years to find the right combination of medications that actually helped, but some of those years were spent with psychiatrists that honestly just flat out sucked at their job. I would also recommend having a therapist as well, though medication is still top priority. It's important to engage and interact with your psychiatrist in the same way you would a therapist, you need to talk to them and ask questions, tell them how you feel, what bothers you etc. It's the only way for them to gauge what kind of state you're in, and the more information you can communicate to them the better, even if it's hard for you to really say what you want.

Life Advice / Re: Recommend me some earbuds
« on: July 05, 2013, 03:23:37 am »
Ear buds tend to be one of those "get what you pay for" kind of things. There are always some sets that sound better than the others at their price point, but they generally don't sound much better than something you could get at a higher price point. I would highly recommend looking at slightly more expensive models and trying to find a used pair, audiophiles of every price-point are always trying to upgrade.

A handful of recommendations shamelessly ripped from this guide:
Philips SHE3590, $12
Brainwavz Beta, $13-$29
Meelectronics M6, $17-$23
JVC HA-FX40, $20
DUNU Trident, $30-$40

I'd also recommend Shure ear-tips, depending on the buds you buy they might take some work with needle-nose pliers to fit over the flange, but getting the right fit as pretty much the single most important aspect of getting the most quality sound, as well as blocking out external noise. I hear the foam ones get recommended most often. If you weren't looking for in-ear style, well... The only ones I'd recommend are Yuin PK3's. If you're moving around they aren't likely to stay in your ears, and they don't really block any noise... But they sound pretty damn great for their price.

This guy's first 7DRL was You Only Live Once back in 2006... That's a seven year YOLO! Does this guy know how to predict trends or what?

Well I feel dumb, I've only been equipping a single sword at any given time.

In my defense though, I haven't been in a single battle that required more than the one.

We’re very sorry, but Windows XP does not meet the minimum system requirements for Dragon’s Prophet.
Well fuck this shit.

Sounds like a personal problem.

I'm leery of free to play East Asian MMOs.  Is this gonna be some agonizing pay to win grindfest?
I've only been playing a few days so I can't really give first hand experience for the end-game, but from what I've heard it's kind of along the same lines as PlanetSide 2 in terms of necessary unlocks. Shelling out a bit of money will let you upgrade some equipment faster, but you can just as easily not pay any cash and invest some time into farming. The only things you really "need" to pay money for are a couple bag + bank space unlocks (You get two free unlocks at levels 10 and 20, but from what I'm seeing it doesn't quite cut it if you play long-term), and one or two unlocks in the Dragon Lair are required to max out skill slots.

I'd ballpark the bag + dragon unlocks to come in between $8-$15 depending on preferences, less if you buy Station Cash during a double or triple sale day (Fourth of July is coming up, and should have at least double). I haven't gotten into the upgrade system so I can't really comment on that.
