Mod Releases / Re: Modest Mod v0.40.24-1
« on: February 07, 2015, 11:58:08 am »
Yes, but so are tame hyenas, tame cheetahs, tame lions, tame crocodiles...

The question isn't if individuals have ever been tamed, but if the species has ever been domesticated. Camels and elephants have been domesticated. Bears, hyenas, cheetahs, lions, and crocodiles haven't.

I agree with this sentiment. Elves, not Dwarves, are the nature lovers and Dwarves should not be able to tame certain animals.
BUT - Toady did allow it in vanilla DF.
So perhaps you can add a Modest Module on allowing/not allowing certain species taming?

Oh vmware.
a, Set print mode to 2D.
b, Figure out how to enable hardware acceleration/opengl drivers.

Not just VMWare. It happens to me on my Windows laptop and I have mentioned it at least two times in this thread in the past. Changing the Print Mode to 2D does fix it.
In that case: update your gpu driver.

Nope, sorry. That's not the issue either. I'm obsessive about up-to-date drivers. I think it's specific to laptops, because it happens with two different model laptops but not with any desktops I use.

I would suggest including Pedestals (a generic building that can be made from any type of artifact) from ModestMod

Seconded. I mean, what else are you going to do with an Artifact bracelet?

Ahh, you broke your streak... 40_17 came out before you released 40_16!
So you'll jump over 16 to release 17, right?

DF Gameplay Questions / Paved road and slopes/ramps
« on: November 12, 2014, 09:11:00 pm »
I'm building a paved road down my mountain, 3 wide for trade (even if they don't actually use it). You can't build a paved road over slopes/ramps. What to do there, then? The natural slopes are dirt and I want them stone instead. Construct ramps of stone instead?

Trying that I seem to get unusable upward slopes when I wanted a downward one...
Any suggestions, please?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Question on preferences
« on: November 12, 2014, 07:38:55 pm »
When a dwarf prefers a tree (say, macadamia trees), that is distinct from them liking macadamia wood, correct? In other words, would Urist gain any benefit from having a macadamia tree wood bed in his room if his preference was for the tree specifically?

DF Gameplay Questions / Butchering a minotaur skeleton?
« on: November 11, 2014, 02:37:09 pm »
I have a partially mangled skeleton of a Minotaur (he by pure chance got on an outside bridge just as it was raising and was catapulted 8 squares, then plowed the ground for another 4 bloodsmeared squares). It's all skeleton now, so is there any way to butcher the skeleton for the bones? I'd love to have a Minotaur head totem and some minotaur bone crossbows.

I also have some Hamster Men skeletons that aren't mangled I'd like to butcher as well, in case the partially mangled status of the minotaur means it is unusable.

All the skeletons are in a refuse pile near my butchers shop, and the butcher still won't touch them when I give the order to butcher a dead animal. But he did for a couple of camel corpses in there earlier.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Where did my dwarf go? Bridge-a-pult
« on: November 06, 2014, 08:50:28 pm »
I actually had this happen with a minotaur today totally by accident.
I have a bridge across a stream midmap, and "Zar Breachmoths the Lost Tenacity" appeared on the edge. I immediately had the lever pulled, hoping it would block him. Instead I watched as by pure chance he got on the bridge just as it went up. He landed 8 squares away, and then left bloodsmears another 4 squares long as he plowed across the ground. He went unconscious, with broken ribs and lungs.
I love this game.

DF General Discussion / Re: Dwarf Fortress 40_13 Starter Pack r5
« on: October 22, 2014, 11:59:36 pm »
TWBT still giving me problems. When I play on my Win7 widescreen desktop with r5, I still have the bug where the screen is off centered when it moves to a Dwarf after having baby, a mood, etc.
Playing r5 on my Vista laptop  (1280x800), everything loads but then TWBT causes the loading screen to scramble, with random characters all over instead of the menus appearing, and I can't start the game because nothing is readable. Changing Print Mode to 2D makes the loading screen appear as normal, and I can start the game.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Cancel job: item Inaccessible
« on: October 15, 2014, 03:17:12 pm »
It turned out it was a stockpile for Skull totems I had put near the entrance to my fortress on a ledge, and smoothed the ramp away so no one could climb up to it.

Thanks for the help.

DF Gameplay Questions / Solved: Cancel job: item Inaccessible
« on: October 15, 2014, 02:21:23 pm »
I am getting the repeating message: Urist cancels Store Item in Stockpile: Item Inaccessible.

Is there a way to find out which item it specifically is? I may have walled off an area that has an item still to be dumped, or it could be something else entirely.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Training multiple marksdwarves at once?
« on: September 26, 2014, 11:57:24 am »
You will have to make sure that the rooms designated from the targets don't overlap and are big enough so the dwarf can stand at least 5(?) tiles away from it. Make sure the firing direction is set properly on each target, and that you have enough bolts assigned to your squad (via m->f) and stockpiled.

So you can't make a line of targets right next to each other, but have to spread them out like 5 tiles apart? Because the room is square when designated by default, so 5 length = 5 width...
Or is there a way around this that doesn't require spreading out the targets so wide?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Homoesexual dwarves and the military
« on: September 26, 2014, 11:49:34 am »
Therapist (at least for 27.0) has this already. Group your dwarves by Gender and Orientation and it shows hetero, bi-, and homo Orientations.
It doesn't seem to be bugged in over representing non-hetero, since only 2 of my 27 were non-hetero, or about 7%.

Channels go down, yes, and serve as ramps.
Three wide if you want your Trade Depot inside.
