Can I make a suggestion for the embark-assistant? Or maybe this doesn't fall under its scope, idk.

Give us an option for a random embark location. Just plop the fort down somewhere in the world and good luck surviving in whatever conditions are there.  Frozen evil biome with no metals?  Good luck.  Temperate hill country with an aquifier?  Better start checking the wiki.

I know nothing prevents us from doing that by throwing a dart at our monitor, but it would seem to be more reflective of the Will of Armok if the computer generated one for us.

Are you bringing your dwarfs inside with a burrow and a civilian alert?  I find there's usually plenty of warning when a siege comes, and I don't lose any dwarfs on the surface.

Well, except for the one militia guy who goes Leroying off into the mob.

I'm pretty sure that I've seen clowns move through upwards diagonals. I.E. I mined a tile above the one of the tiles bordering the hollow of a spire, without revealing and releasing the circus, and clowns that wandered into the map from the underworld edges somehow managed to slip through that non-existent gap and wreak havoc on my dwarves.

This.  They can squeeze upwards through a vertical diagonal into a stairway, if that makes any sense.  Did you have any stairways above and adjacent to the breach?

A line of 10 or 20 x10 upright steel spikes linked to a repeating lever, with a 10x10 cave in room at the end to take out the survivors.  Bait animal chained up in the cave in room.  Easy peasy, and you end up with more addy then you know what to do with.

I've read that after the initial wave is dealt with, more will occasionally spawn.  As long as you floor over the hollow space at the bottom of the spire, you should be fine.

I like 'em.  They are horribly inaccurate, but when you get that one ballista bolt plow through a file of trolls...  Immensely satisfying.

You have to channel your enemies through a 3 or 4 wide corridor to get them to bunch up, though.  And use fortifications to keep the operators from wandering into each others' line of fire.

The stair on level z-2 should have been an up stair.

He can build one (b-C-u) to get himself out of there.  Or dig another stairway next to it if you're still in soil.

Did you designate the water itself as the water supply, or the land at the edge of the pond?  "Only tiles adjacent to water qualify as usable water sources - thus, if you want to place a single-tile zone, place the zone onto a ground tile next to the water, not over the water itself."

Do you have a fertilizer stockpile set up near the farm, and full of potash?  Until I got one set up and stocked, I found that my farmers were spending all their time wandering around hauling the potash to the fields, and no time planting.  Try turning off the seasonal fertilization and see what happens.

You could create a therapy room - a legendary bedroom or dining room, like you would make for a noble, and then assign the unhappy dwarf to it.  Kind of tough to do if they're unhappy in large numbers, though.

In your data/init folder, there is a file called "init.txt"
Simply change the MACRO_MS value, and suddenly macros go as fast as they should:
[MACRO_MS:1]

Makes them faster than lightning.  Does anyone know if this causes any problems with the game?
