DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: October 05, 2010, 02:50:19 pm »
The goblins have gone all in with this last siege, 48 goblins, 8 of them elites, 12 of them on mounts, 20 trolls and their daemon law-giver has come to lead them. I was able to capture nearly 8 of them in cages, while about 25 were served the gruesome death sentence of being atom smashed. I was unable to get their daemon to come towards my fort (apparently she wouldn't path through the trap maze )
It would have been oh so satisfying to kill the leader of the gobbo civilization.

hearken back to my days of playing Warhammer, I shall not rest until every dwarf killed by goblin hands is avenged seventy times over, Until every name is crossed from the book of grudges.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Weapon mixes in squads?
« on: October 02, 2010, 06:31:44 pm »
Though it may take a little bit more time than a uniform weapon squad I like to outfit dwarves with the weapon they are best at, or if they have no previous weapon skills at all what the squad needs in order to keep a good balance between sharp and blunt weapons. In this way I usually get squads ready to handle most any situation. In my current millitary I have 3 axe dwarves 3 hammerers ( 2 of which have silver mauls captured from humans ) 2 spear dwarves 2 sword dwarves a lasher a longsword dwarf 4 mace dwarves (go figure) 2 wrestlers and a lone Knife dwarf.

on a related note one of the peasants in my first migration wave was a competent wrestler, I names him Norris (after chuck of course)
in the hopes that he would kick as much ass as his namesake, he has survived all seven battles that he has participated in losing an eye and a few toes but doesn't have a single kill to his name, I  made him captain of B squad in hopes that one day he will redeem his uselessness and maybe kill a titan or something.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Your best artifact ever
« on: October 02, 2010, 04:46:07 pm »
Got the worst artifact ever yesterday. My novice bonecarver goes into a fey mood, I didn't have any butcherable animals available but my militia had just killed a mountain titan. Long story short it took my butcher nearly a season to drag the titan all the way to my butchershop and just as the bonecarver is ready to go insane the thing gets butchered. Urist McBonecarver has started a mysterious construction! Im thinking "Awesome yes! this is going to be great! I mean titan bones have got to be worth alot right?"
well he made a titan bone scepter, no images carved onto it, no spikes menacing from it, no decorations of any kind. Total value 1200 dwarf bucks, Needless to say I threw him in the warthog pit.

Had my first titan show up yesterday. "Oh fuck a giant eyeless horse with a knobby shell!! SEND OUT ALL LEGIONS!!" (legions meaning twenty odd recruits without proper training or equipment.) well the horse waltzes right past my trap corridor and starts biting the kitten screen I have set up to spot snatchers. For two entire pages of battle log the kitten lived, two pages full of "the titan Atu Ota Mottrath bites the cat child in the left toe shattering the bone!" the kitten died of course but not before bruising the belly fat and leg muscle of the beast, he also stalled it long enough for my militia to hack it to death.
I shall never forget your brave sacrifice cat child.

I would like to see a new skill introduced, Nannying.
set a playroom zone just like you would a hospital, fill it with toys and stuff.
Could also maybe increase the children's skill levels before adulthood, nothing above adequate.
maybe make the nanny a minor noble, a novice nanny could look after 2-3 children whereas a master nanny could look after 50+ children. all this so that Urist McHammerlord doesn't run out to fight a goblin siege only to have her baby skewered through the head, causing her to tantrum, possibly starting a tantrum spiral.

Dear Human mcNotadwarf: king of humans
I realize that your gemcutter/trader died on my front lawn last year. this was in fact the direct result of a double goblin ambush. For one reason or another he refused to scurry to the safety of the inner walls with his comrades (who all lived without injury) Rather he chose to stay out and take fifteen crossbow bolts to the neck.
You'll be happy to know we successfully drove off the retches and avenged your comrade fifteen times over, we also traded lucratively with your merchants buying booze wood and weapons in abundance. I humbly ask that you withdraw the fifteen hammermen you have stationed outside my keep, I am certainly not going to lower the drawbridge and your hammermen are certainly going to get a few boulders catapulted at them.

In short you are actually HELPING the goblins, you are helping the ones who killed your loyal gemcutter in cold blood.
Frustrated at your incredible stupidity and misguided rage- Lord of Bent Castle

third year fort, human caravan arrives along with a goblin ambush.
the goblins waste time killing wild warthogs as the humans make into the relative safety of my walls
one of my animal traps at the top of the map goes off, another ambush, now have 8 goblin bowmen and 7 goblin crossbowmen coming towards my entrance. I set the atom smasher to repeat, well turns out I set the bridge to retract, rather than raise/lower, so the atom smasher is more of a retracting carpet, needless to say the goblins strode right in, several getting caught in cages, others getting pummeled by rocks. the goblins wasted most of their ammo on ten odd warthogs and a human bowman, so I sent my 10 man militia to help the human hammerer and swordsman, not a single dwarf sustained a major injury (though the human swordsman vomited well over 100 times leaving a giant trail of green across my rock stockpile).
all told seven goblins captured, 3 in fort traps 4 in traps intended for animals as they fled from my axes
9 goblins lay slain in the courtyard.
This day shall be well remembered, and each goblin life taken shall be recorded in the book of grudges.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: The DF2010 Little Questions Thread
« on: September 29, 2010, 05:34:06 pm »
About 3 years into my current fort and I have about 19 capturd goblins.
two questions.
First how do I take away the goblins items, I want to use them as military training but I don't want to risk injury.
I tried the reclaim then dump method suggested in the wiki but my dwarves didn't haul anything away.
Second if I build a goblin cage elsewhere, say, in my arena can the goblins escape? I know this works for animals but I'm worried about setting a goblin hammerer loose in my fortress.
