DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / My Mini Magma Mega Monster Mincer!
« on: December 05, 2021, 04:16:36 pm »
This is a miniature (1x1 embark) magma-based mega-project monster mincer.

It runs magma sprinklers in a clockwise loop around a causeway.  Steel spikes run in the opposite direction, counter-clockwise around the causeway.

  • Does not block invader pathing.
  • Wagon accessible.
  • Runs indefinitely.
  • Mostly building destroyer proof.  Anywhere a building destroyer might stand to destroy something will shortly be bathed in lava or run through with masterwork steel spikes.
  • Kinda self cleaning.  The bridges retract, cleaning the magma, but the goblinite stills needs sorting.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Repeater design help
« on: November 09, 2021, 01:20:49 pm »
I'm having trouble finding a repeater that sends a steady ON signal when the repeater itself is OFF.

I want to line my entry with upright spikes linked to a repeater, but I want the spikes to be retracted when the repeater is not running.  Spikes retract when they receive an ON signal, and extend when they receive an OFF signal.  Every repeater design I can find defaults the output to OFF when not running, leaving the spikes extended.

I would prefer a compact minecart solution, powered or unpowered, but I will take what I can get if anyone has a repeater that meets these requirements.

Much appreciated!

Sure, I can make 2-3 layers of soil or sand work.

Need exactly one layer of heavy aquifer for the mega project though. =(

I am looking for an embark with the following features:
world size: 33x33
embark size: 3x3
100% flat
savagery: calm
a complete heavy aquifer
biome temperature: warm
sand
flux
iron ore
metal ore
lignite/coal
gold ore
candy
living dwarven civ
neighbor: goblins
neighbor: humans
neighbor: elves
neighbors: many towers
200 years of history
one cavern
biome alignment: 100% good

I need exactly one layer of heavy aquifer with two layers of soil or sand above it.

Been trying to generate this for a while.  I'm hopeful the wizards here might be able to help.

Thanks!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Minecart dumping water[833] down stairs
« on: December 20, 2015, 10:16:17 pm »
If you dump a minecart full of water[833] down a stairway, will it drop a boulder of water[833] down the stairs and resolve to 2/7 of water after it collides at the bottom (similar to a minecart shotgun), or flow 2/7 of water down the stairs?

I am dying to play on this embark...PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE upload something... a save... parms...anything

I would upload it...but exactly what does the DF map archive mean by "export map layers as bmp files".

edit: Scratch that. I put it on Dwarf Fortress File Depot in the pregenerated worlds section under "Volcanoes and Waterfalls"

Got it! Thanks so much!

Ok, so here is the mysterious construction I've been working on for the past couple of weeks. It's not perfect, but it's damn near close. It has:
- sediment/flux layer
- non-pillar volcano
- waterfall
- trade with all civilizations
- Sinister forests

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This was made using PerfectWorldDF, so the parameters are ignored. To get a waterfall on a volcano site, pretty much the entire world had to be hand-drawn. And for those who are interested; the trick to getting a waterfall is to have two rivers meet with each river starting and ending in vastly different elevations.

I am dying to play on this embark...PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE upload something... a save... parms...anything

One of my favorite moments involved a couple z-levels...

I was building a cast for an obsidian fortress, and had channeled out a massive ring surrounded by a curtain wall on the z-level above with one small entrance.  The invaders had to enter through the small entrance then immediately walk down a ramp to get to the z -level below, where my squad of legendary axe dwarves were waiting.

This caused a bunch of invaders to group up in front of the entrance waiting to get in.  After watching the battle start I went up a z-level to see what kind of invaders were queuing up outside.  It was then I noticed the body parts flying up over the wall from the level below.

It just creates a beautiful picture...goblins waiting to charge into a fortress get to watch the body parts of their friends who just charged in before them come flying back over the wall.

What if...

...instead of floor grates, carve down stairs in the entire three tile path.  Enemies can move forward over stairs, lava flows down stairs, and they're constructions, so building destroyers cant break them.

I'm not sure if you can build a drawbridge over stairs, but if you can wagons would still be able to come in.  Also, I have no idea how collecting goblinite would work on stairs.

Anyone know if you can build a drawbridge over the top of downward stairs, and if you can collect goblinite off of stairs?

Seems like someone must have tried this before, but I cant find anything on the forum about it.

If I carve a fortification into a natural wall, then flow water or magma over the top of the fortification on the level above, will it flow down through the fortification to the z-level below?

I would like to have a natural surface (no buildings, i.e. grates) that units can walk on but will allow fluid to flow through.

Anyone tried this before?

LOVE this trap, simply amazing.

Any ideas on how to counter building destroyers destroying your grates?
