Question:

Of you mine ice, you end up with a ice bit like if ou mined stone right? I haven't actually gotten to mine ice yet.

Could you throw the ice into a chamber and let it melt into useable water? Sounds unlikely.

Isn't Platinum supposed to be really good for blunt weapons because of its density?

So you need to make sure that the z level above is covered over to protect against flying going up and over.

Gotcha. Wah~ I have a lot more floors to build @_@

I never understood how flying creatures worked and how to keep them out.

Since the question has been answered I'll add a caveat that some enemies avoid traps so you will need additional defenses. You probably already know that but some of the things that are immune to traps are dangerous enough that it is worth repeating.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Making good rooms
« on: January 06, 2011, 12:17:48 pm »
I built my Dining Hall in a large room that I had dug out to get Magnetite. So it has good values for size and material (Magnetite has a good value).

I plopped some nice statues in it. And have been filling it with chairs and tables. EVERY SQUARE of the room is smoothed and engraved. Dwarves love their Legendary Dining Room of Awesomeness.

I think anything can be used. The trick is to use Quality and to match up stuff to their Likes. Don't forget you can smooth and engrave the floors and walls (usually).

If you want to put a hurt on a Tantrum Spiral you either need to remove the Disgruntled Springs (The dwarves that are going to start the tantrum) or if its too far gone for that try and get something big and fancy setup like a nice statue garden and an awesome dining hall with lots of tables. Think of it like a big scale. Happy Thoughts are small marbles. Unhappy Thoughts are like heavy blocks. You wanna pile a lot of happy thoughts onto all your dwarves' scales to outweigh the occsional unhappy thought.

Its 4am here so if this doesn't make entirely good sense slap on a Sleep Deprivation Filter and re-read it  ;)

My dwarves' thoughts generally read like this:

"Has slept in a good/great/awesome/royal bed lately. Has ate in a Legendary Dining Hall lately. Has had a decent/nice/great meal lately.Has had a good/awesome drink lately.Has been disappointed by the lack of tables lately. (Damn dwarves! Don't take your breaks all at once! hehe) Has admired one or three nice pieces of construction lately (I have a good quality drawbridge and they like that XD).

So you can work on your problem in both broad and targeted ways depending on what your current situation is.

I think you can fish through Floor Grates. Its something to try. Slap a floor grate over the hole and see if your guys will fish through it. You don't need to be more than one level over the water then.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Making a 'Dwarf Wash'?
« on: January 06, 2011, 03:19:46 am »
Rain cleans contamination too right? If you built one dwarf wash at the entrance to your fortress, outside, it'd take care of some of it itself.

Having several washes would probably help the contamination problem. Another is setting up several wells with only one access point and a draw bridge that lands on that spot. Dwarves wash at the well then you Atom SMASH! the contaminants left behind.

Depending on what version of DF you play there are different programs you can run alongside the game. I play the latest version of Dwarf Fortress and with that I use DwarfTherapist and sort everyone by their combat skills on that. You can sort dwarves by individual skills on it as well by clicking on the skill and it'll display the dwarves in order of their skill with that particular skill.

Ita not a bad idea to have a secure clearinghouse for your artifacts while you prepare a home for them. Whether its an axe, a chair, or a bucket, its good to have a secure place to hold stuff while you work out what you're gonna do with it. You don't want it lifted by a thief or grabbed to haul water or lye or something.

But yeah, I made a stockpile that accept all artifact quality stuff regardless of material, type of item, etc. And given the uselessness of the artificats I've recieved so far, its never going to be emptied.

There are several metalworking skills. Make sure you have someone assigned to the correct skill. I had the same problem til I checked the wiki and the skill I had assigned didn't line up with the task I wanted done. Light dawned on marble head indeed.
