You can also wall off a portion of the above ground for a statue garden with its only access point being stairs from inside the safety of your fortress. Idle Urists who desire some time outside will chose this area over the unsafe, outer gates.

How do you think your dwarves see YOU?


They see me in the last, grisly moments of their lives as they cry out my name in worship. I am EVERYTHING!!!

My migrants dump stone into a quantum stockpile because I hate clutter. By the time everything is clean I usually have my glass industry and barracks operational so the women become glassmakers and the men become soldiers.

I had this same problem. They were using stairway to get to the construction (the up/down stairs) and standing ontop of it as they deconstructed the constuction. What I did was designate something next to the stair to be deconstructed then,  when the dwarf got to this designation, I would cancel it and then designate the stair to be deconstructed; this would allow the dwarf to approach the stair from an angle, rather than from the stairway path.

I always put my butchers in a room with either a door or with a diagonal entrance to prevent miasma spread. Also make sure you have enough barrels/pots, nearby stockpiles (food and refuse), and some idle dwarves. I run into the this same problem early on because I keep my dwarves too busy.

Mod them to be domestic if you want to embark with an army. They are fun, but you really need to control the population.

Give them the ability to shoot webbing if you want them to be super effective haha

2x2 embark, severely limit your mining to only what is necessary (avoids mass stone), construct everything out of glass (solves the problem of having no stone), no moving fluids, destroy all unnecessary items, and block off all unused areas.

Diagonal connections, if I remember correctly, also depressurize water.

Super easy and sort of cheaty, that's the way a bererez does things!

edit: actually, a bererez would just use dfliquids and move the hell on. Super lazy and totally cheating.

To dig the pits  for the dodge fall trap I just channel one layer at a time starting from the top. You can also dig each level out and then remotely trigger a cave-in to remove the floors. I prefer the channel technique even though it takes more managing because dealing with cave-ins can sometimes be messy.

Use weapon traps with 10 giant spiked balls (I don't like disks, but that's me) for maximum dodge chance. I use glass so the balls are less deadly (most of the time).

This should work. I stopped using floodgates all together in favor of bridges.

I also read somewhere that a raised bridge could not be destroyed by a building destroyer, but I have no idea if that is true.
