DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Bedrooms: Have I've been wasting time
« on: October 02, 2011, 06:57:37 pm »
Holy crap, someone needs to sticky this!  I didn't know either, I just assigned dwarfs their beds since that was how it was done in the tutorial and no one's mentioned anything to the contrary.

You're supposed to be covered head-to-toe in metal armor for that btw, and I usually prefer steel just to be sure.

If you made custom stockpiles, make sure you enabled max barrels and/or bins, whichever applies.  I used to have a problem with that before I noticed the problem.

Works for the X-men, works for me.  Both Xavier and I don't have ~4 years to get these slackers into shape; more like two weeks.  Plus I'm guessing it'd be hard to fix considering that'd involve reworking xp from battle (if not the whole system).

DF Gameplay Questions / Turning grazing down/off?
« on: July 29, 2011, 11:51:35 am »
Is there a way to edit the raws where creatures either don't have to graze or have to at a negligible amount?  After reading a good bit of boatmurdered I like the idea of just trading elephants for a ton of stuff, but apparently they just die when they're tamed.  Plus I liked not having to worry about animals with everything else that goes on.

DF General Discussion / Re: Anyone try the DF clone on steam?

It's a 2d game. It's kinda funny that you start a thread without researching the subject, looking at how avaliable the info is (tons of trailers, discussions etc.).

There wasn't any discussion, I started this the day it came out, and the trailers look exactly like DF with better graphics.

I play both, but comparing which is better is like comparing CoD with Mass Effect 2 or something.  They do their different things quite well.  I personally prefer DF since it's MUCH easier to get cool "looking" stuff done without wasting all my time, but really there's not the same genre so you can't really say one's better.

Can you dig down at all or is it just outward?

DF General Discussion / Anyone try the DF clone on steam?

I'm hesitant to try it since "casual" and "in the vein of Dwarf Fortress" seem like an awful combination, but Dwarfs?! literally looks like they took DF and made it casual.  I guess its just the digging and fighting aspect or something?  The trailer actually shows death by water and lava at the same time, so it could be cool.  I'm reserving judgment since just thinking about it is starting to bring up all kinds of "whats the point of you can't do x" scenarios.

Anyone try it?

Is this a feature now or what?  For some reason my cloth guy always turns any thread I have into cloth automatically, and I distinctly remember needing to manually do that in .18 before the mineral change.  Is this a new feature or is my guy just being really proactive?

PS - If this is a feature, I'd be all about setting stuff to automatically work assuming the fuel and/or supplies are there; this would make farming much less tedious and I wouldn't have to worry about SO many things.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Best way to find metal now?
« on: April 21, 2011, 08:24:19 am »
Good info guys, thanks a lot.  Also, are all iron ores deeper down?  There should be flux on my embark but I've yet to find any; trust me when I say I've torn apart z-levels looking and just find more useless stone (way more of the blue than I ever used to find).  I did have "deep soil" if that matters, but those layers seemed to stop forever ago.

Oh yeah, you can still use the finder to look for flux... derp.  I mostly was looking for iron when I said "metals" since who cares about non-steel metals before later in the game, so it seems like giving up early when I don't hit any in the first few layers after the soils might be the new plan.  Or you know, using the finder like I forgot about.  ::)

EDIT - I always wait for a jeweller in migrants, I've never bothered leveling it up by itself.  He/she would usually go in the military since not choosing what to encrust is pretty retarded, but there ya go.

Minerals are generally pretty abundant now, if default worldgen settings are used.

Basically use exploratory mining if you want to find a specific metal.

thanks for that link, there's definitely some awesome patterns I'll have to try.  Might skip all the useless gems I accumulate with that too.

DF Gameplay Questions / Best way to find metal now?

Literally as I clicked new topic my guys ran into copper ore, but what do you do if you want metal by mining now?  I turned minerals one notch up, but minerals seems like it can mean any number of things.  Is it literally just trial and error for actually mining metal now?

Not that I'm really complaining, but is the bug where metal armor and such only take 1 bar to make regardless of how many it's supposed to?  Also, if it is, what's the best thing to make and melt down to train armorsmithing and weaponsmithing?  I saw something about breastplates but figured I'd ask since I never looked into weapons that much; used to have way more steel than I'd ever need.
