I do not think dwarf fortress needs any garekeeping or elitism. Everybody is welcome and should play as they wish, if you want to write a guide, good. But please do it in a more considerate way.
That is only my opinion on it, take what you like.
Well the "elitism" is just kind of a joke. The section on difficulty settings mentions that you can just do what you want and set everything up the way you want, including disabling attacks and anything else like that.

Ok, I fixed #1

#2: Regarding tombs, you used to be able to just put down coffins and enable them. I would think at some point there would be a better option to create a mass tomb without having to enclose each coffin with walls or click tomb zones one by one, but I don't really know so I removed that.

#3: ok fixed that

#4: I tried to mention that in the text but I think I want to redo the screenshot for this at some point anyway. I've noticed cabinets and chests not getting used for equipment storage and I'm wondering if they actually need one armor stand per squad member and maybe one weapon stand per squad member too. So I'm still a little unsure about some stuff here.

#5: Ok, I removed that

#6: It might not be anymore. This is based on me remembering stuff from 10 years ago when it did seem to take one or more ticks per z-level to raise the bucket. It was pretty obvious if the well was 30+ levels above an underground lake or something, but I haven't tried long distances like that in a long time.

#7: fixed that

I didn't seem to notice them using a dormitory hospital as a sleeping area when I tried it but maybe I just had rooms for them all.

Been working on this guide and figured I'd ask people here for feedback.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Best embark combat skills for one dwarf?

So some ideas are:

Dodger: 4
Axedwarf: 2
Shield: 2
Fighter: 2

or

Dodger: 3
Axedwarf: 3 (or maybe Fighter: 3)
Teacher: 2
Leader: 2

or even

Swimming: 3
Teacher: 4
Leader: 3
and just train as a squad of one full time to gain the combat skills.

With only 10 points it seems like you can only pick like 3 or maybe 4 skills or something to get any of those skills high enough to be helpful.....

I know it gets more complicated if you decided to have several start with combat skills, because some might be able to teach the others their speciality, but what is the best set of skills to start one combat dwarf with when you only have 10 points?

It's kind of interesting to see what happens to articles on the wiki after this much time!

If you've never played before then you may want to try this first: http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Adventure_mode_quick_start

That way instead of dying 50 times before figuring things out you'll only die maybe 10 or 20 times before then.

Bows/Crossbows seem to be pretty useless in this version, if you ask me. Last time I tried either one the enemies all moved like 5 squares for every shot I got off, and I had skills trained up to legendary. My speed was also at least 1800 or more.

If tested, I'm betting throwing pretty much anything would be more effective just because you can throw several objects in the time it takes to shoot an arrow. And throwing doesn't require a (cross)bow or specific ammo. If nothing else you can get infinite rocks off the ground almost anywhere.

It was the most anticlimactic fight I've ever had.

That's hilarious. I wonder what the chances of that happening are...

Yes, that's what I was describing how to do. Something like that should result in a few islands of the right size.

I usually collect all the crappy spears, swords, etc (anything with a point or edge) that I find in lairs and such and throw them at enemies as they approach me. A thrown sword can chop off limbs. (It seems like when you throw a weapon that has multiple possible attacks one of the attacks is made at random.)

Once they get up next to me I chop off a hand, arm, foot, leg starting with whatever is easiest. If I get a leg then they are usually screwed and so I just move on to the next guy while staying out of range of the guy crawling along the ground missing a leg.

For large creatures like megabeasts I tend to just use stabbing attacks to the head or body. Being so large, it seems difficult for slashing to do much damage, and I'm pretty sure blunt attacks wouldn't be much use. Slashing limbs/heads of large creatures can work but it seems to be much more difficult than with humanoid opponents.

I tend to only do the shaking around by the throat, tearing apart the throat thing when it's just one humanoid or smaller opponent around.

Haven't tried throwing megabeast corpses but it sounds like carrying one around would severely limit your speed....

How do you gouge anyway? I only get 'release' as an option when I grab someone's head.

Full docs on all possible wrestling maneuvers:

Very enlightening.

Seems like the genesis mod is an absolute must for the sexual sadists out there. I mean I might (in adventure mode) cut someone's wanker off and beat them to death with it just for a laugh, but I wouldn't be doing it on a routine basis.
