I know I had that problem for a while.

Once I get a Jeweler dwarf (usually in one of the first two immigrant waves), I rarely have had a problem buying everything I want from a caravan.  One or two encrusted items will usually do it.  Not sure whether this is a good long-term tactic, but it makes the first few years easier.   :)

Unfortunately I think you're stuck with either nonsquare tiles or a squished-seeming gameplay window.  At least until and unless Toady changes things so that the game isn't limited to an 80 tile by 25 tile game window.

It's possible I've missed something completely, though.

Thanks.  Maybe I'll try going all Sweet Pods for a change.  I did plump helmets before because the dwarves could eat them raw for one meal, then cook the spawn for a second (if needed).  I don't remember if that works for Sweet Pods.

I played DF for a while a year or so ago, and I'm thinking of picking it up again.  Before I do, I have a question about what I thought was a bug at the time:

Does cooking plump helmets in dwarf mode still result in no plump helmet spawn being produced, and if so, is it considered a bug or a feature?

I have yet to get a farm up and running before winter.  I've mostly relied on fishing, hunting, and food brought with me for the first year.  After that, I can farm, and just one or two gem-encrusted craft items will typically buy out all the food from a caravan.  Farms are definitely important, though.

Why do tantruming dwarves always destroy bridges?  That's the only "room" I've had one destroy, and I think they destroy them at least as often as ordinary furniture.  I find it kind of weird that a dwarf can destroy a 3x6 bridge of stone blocks by himself in general, but why do they do it so often?

Actually, it's somewhat useful to put a refuse pile in your fortress and seal it off with doors.  It improves the efficiency of waste disposal and the crafts that depend on the waste a fair amount.

Have you already dismantled and used your wagon(s)?  If not, set the wagon to be dismantled just like a room, and make sure you have at least one dwarf designated as a Carpenter.  Dismantling a wagon will give you three units of wood.
