DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Dwarven Linguistics: Community Project
« on: August 26, 2013, 09:32:11 pm »

Also, would dwarven have a explicit neutral gender? It would save some work by hiding the neutral in one of the other genders like portuguese does (masculine can be both masculine and neutral)
I would think that neutral gender would be the default for dwarves, given how gender-neutral their society is (with the exception of baby-carrying and the parent a dwarven child chooses to follow).

So instead of having masculine / neutral with the feminine specifically noted, you'd have neutral and then both the masculine and feminine specifically noted.
Why stick with actual genders? Perhaps the dwarves, taking a small note from their ethics, distinguish between sentients and non-sentients, with the latter being the majority of word?

Do all of them have the same material? As in, does he have a silver warhammer while the others have steel or something else?

DF Suggestions / Re: Evil Rain should give Dwarfs Happy Toughts
« on: April 24, 2013, 05:50:19 pm »
Just cause they're his slaves doesn't mean they're happy about it.  Maybe if it rained exceptionally well-crafted cheese...

...they'd all get concussions and die with a smile permanently engraved on their face. :P
So, better than what we offer them?

What might be another interesting addition would be to have them hold annual commemorative feasts for particularly special events. Or maybe days of morning, taking a page from the Roman dies atri. If made to be a week (more would probably be horrible) then it would actually be pretty awesome to see your dwarves remembering the Great Victory at Bronzefurnace in 259.

If you removed the offending body parts, could you have magmanauts then?

What a curious
turn of events in this thread.
Quite strange derailing.

"There is currently a bug that causes only one thread to be created from a stack of wool."

Is the wiki still up to date on this bug?
From my alpaca fortress, I believe it is so.

This is spectacular - keep up the amazing work! You should consider bundling it together at some point, hell, I might buy it if you made a book (and you keep it up, as formerly-tacitly assumed).

My current fortress has goblins who wear minimal armor (helmet, (leather) armor, and shoes); said battleaxe would be very effective at purging the nudists.
Stripper goblins are hardly the norm, so you should probably prepare for some armored goblins, since metal is still metal.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Stones VS. Stone blocks.
« on: January 02, 2013, 05:30:04 pm »
How much stone are we talking?

Because, if it's under a few thousand, you won't see that much of a difference either way, in terms of FPS. For actual dwarf speed, blocks are lighter and thus easier to carry - they also have a build speed bonus (for bridges definitely, not sure about other constructions).

If you have a metric ton of stone, you probably have a large amount of open areas. There is a suspicion (and a well founded one) that dwarves moving through large open areas consume more CPU cycles for the pathfinding function to try for all the open squares (I believe traffic designations can alleviate some of the problems there).

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Toady might be getting a big donation soon

I'm still curious if the concern for his health is more out of genuine care for Toady or just a desire for the long promised DF 1.0.

Why don't we have a task to decapitate things in the first place?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Bolt stack separation/candy factory
« on: November 03, 2012, 07:46:54 am »
I found a dwarfier way to unstack items. I only checked to see if it works for bolts and coins (it does) but it probably works for all stackables. Get a miserable/tantruming dwarf into an isolated room somehow, then lock the door, and inside that room have a stack of coins. When they tantrum sometimes they throw things. They'll start spamming about 200 hundred or so coins in all directions in the span of a few seconds. Then just d-b-c them and d-b-m them.

This is a way to make miserable naked children do something useful.

This was inspired by a tantrum spiral that happened to me when a pissy little dwarf kid grabbed some bolts and started tossing them all over the place, killing my expedition leader in the process with one of them.

Have fun

Can How can we weaponize this?

This is true, but adding them is a rather long process that I would prefer to avoid.
I'm lazy. And then I don't have to send my own personal word list when I give them the link to this thread.
