Giant pandas.

I thought I was gonna send out my 5 guys to get a little training. I was wrong.
While it didn't take out my entire militia, one thing that surprised me is it took out one soldier in no time at all and injured a couple more. It tore out the throat of one of them. TWICE. And then just swiped at a few more before They stabbed it enough times to kill it.

Use them to train your military. This way they all die, and your military gets experience.

Guys, how many dwarven kids do you reckon could take out say a roc or equally hostile mega-beast?

GUYS! I HAVE GOOD NEWS! HES NOW BACK ON HIS FEET! :D Hes back to slaving away in my fortress as everyone does  8) So soap is really needed?

Dwarves with minor injuries (broken limb, amputation etc etc) seem to do okay without soap. But cave-in victims and other victims with multiple/massive injuries are quite likely to die of infection if there is no soap, but with soap - and with a clean water supply in the hospital or at least nearby - they seem to do okay.

I'd hate to see your definition of a Major injury

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What do you do with your immigrants?
« on: August 28, 2011, 05:44:19 pm »
Well, 80-90% of all immigrants that enter my fort are turned into haulers, the few that are not, are put into their respective useful industries.
Some very unlucky immigrants get turned into my first militia (usually 3rd or 4th wave) and proceed to get slaughtered during a training exercise involving a panda.

Maybe there is something in the raws to edit how many mega-beasts can spawn.

But have fun waiting thousands of years for your dragon to grow to adult size.

Wild animals will destroy the child outright.  Tame animals take "pot shots" that usually fail to kill.  Never use wild animals.

Children will fight back, but not on purpose.  Some will rage, but the majority won't, especially if there's mood-elevating things nearby to make them calm and happy.

Do not put all the children in one pit, this is the exact opposite of what we want to happen.  What WILL happen, is that you get a clutch of supersoldiers, send them out to fight, and a goblin lasher kills one of them, sending the other dozen into a tantrum spiral.  Do you WANT a tantrum spiral where the worst offenders are ungodly monstrosities who wear steel not to protect themselves, but to hide their scarred and desecrated body from civilians?

You are doing it all wrong! LESS NO SOCIALISING, MORE ALL KILLING!!!
You should also build say 12 chambers (or whatever age they become adults) and separate them by year, so you release them all at the same time when they reach the required age. Also you should have some magma fall at the exit so they get scarred on the way out, to look more badass of course.

I'm pretty sure they will automatically pick up backpacks and waterskins to carry food and drink in.

Yeah they will auto-pick up water skins and backpacks, aslong as some are available.

So next dwarven caravan, buy all the leather and make 100 water skins and 100 backpacks.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What kind of fort do you build?
« on: August 27, 2011, 07:30:23 am »
Normally just go for dirt/rock forts, dig underground like a true dorf.

Next game however, I will try an above ground fort, and will make each building out a material, so when I look on stonesense, it doesn't look like rainbow building fort.

Dear Newly created Militia

So I sent you out to go and kill a panda to help you train (no danger rooms here), how in the fuck did it take you all that time to track down pandas, which may I remind are supposed to be slow, and then beat it to death with your iron spears for about a month or two.

Yours Truly, your slightly frustrated Overseer.

Dear Urist McTwoThroats

Now you were also part of said militia, Even though you are dead, I somehow congratulate you on managing to actually hit the panda, but Only God Armok knows how the Panda managed to rip out your throat letting you stand up, ripping it out AGAIN, letting you stand up before you stabbed with the spear all without bleeding to death until just after you stabbed it. I would totally engrave this in your tom, but it is in the soil layer, sorry.

Yours truly, You confused and slightly pleased, Glorious Overseer.

You can play with humans?!!!

I didnt realise you could edit the raw files to such an extent......Hmmmm
The idea with building the above ground fort/castle sounds REALLY cool/funny, but but but... What... ehmmm So basically you are playing with "dwarfs" that looks like humans, I mean they only look like humans but behave like dwarves as we know it? Right?

afaik yes - and you can make ANY creature playable.. granted playing as a race of giant earthworms would be sorta disappointing :D

Wait, does this mean I can make Dragons playable? and I'd get Dragon migrants?

How about if we make one big room, dump half of all children in it, and put 1-2 dangerous non-tame animals, that way the kids have more of a chance of survival. Dump in food as needed, have a waterfall in the corner. I say half of all children because some need to go into the civilian sector.

This is like the Dwarven version of the Spartan society.

Can dwarves re-grow beard?

If not, you must sacrifice him to Armok, so that Armok can then nurture the dwarf and have him re-gain his beard.
You might want to adorn is life with gold and finery to try and take his mind of his horrible facial injury.
