Finished in 20 days. This might be a personal record for this year. I had occasional days where I could get through 100+ pages. Sadly, these days were spread rather thin, so the words/day average is a much more pitiable number in reality.

Another fine book by Abercrombie though. Best Served Cold is a delightful tale of vengeance and how awful and wasteful it is. And how that doesn't stop people needing it. It's also really good at making you feel sad and upset. Like I said, delightful.

Was going to begin reading The Neutronium Alchemist, but after a trip to Toronto, I now own a copy of House of Leaves. Can't seem to resist reading it right away. I started reading bits of it before I even finished the last book...

Edit: this post isn't a book

Huh, I also have to wonder how I missed this thread for so long. Might have something to do with not being very active around here...

I just have to say though, wow, I really didn't expect that holding my nose and inhaling through it would actually work but it does! It's weird though - it's like it's not working but is at the same time. I can only imagine that dream-me couldn't breath but real-me could (I can't really explain it better). This is probably going to be my go-to RC along side trying to remember how I got to places for now since it's pretty quick.
Heh, had a similar thing happen in my first intentional lucid dream. I just casually stuck my finger through my hand...it felt strange, but it was so long ago I don't recall it enough to describe the sensation.

Not to make it sound like I'm a lucid dreaming expert or anything, though. That one lasted about a minute before I woke up, and I've had maybe three or four since, all equally short and disappointing. I've been losing the will power to keep up my dream journal as well. It makes me sad, because I love dreams and their possibilities, but my mind is just so cluttered with the junk of life...meditation and dreams came so much easier when I was but a child without too much worry for the future.

Gah. Done, finally. Not a bad trilogy, really, but it has its rough spots. There was one chapter near the end which didn't seem to be revised at all...must've been missed or something?

'twas mostly nice to read, though it's now time to get back to the grim, the dark, the darkest grim of grim dark, Joe Abercrombie, and his world of getting dead for real. Then maybe I'll take a shot at the second book in Peter Hamilton's massive Night's Dawn trilogy, alone about the same length as the trilogy I just finished.

So, all in all, I'll probably get 10 books read this year, considering the pace I've set. Go me.

One of our cats jumped off my bed and I saw something fall on the floor as she dashed away...a spider. As the spider runs off, a cloud of black dots slowly expands from that point...innumerable baby spiders...

Don't think I'm going to sleep tonight.

Okay, I have arrived at a familiar point today. After a little over half a month of fiddling, frustration, an absurdly long power outage, and ceaseless distractions, I can now get a little '@' to move around a terminal. Now with 100% less screen flashing! It feels like I've been on pause for this whole time, but I have admittedly learned a lot of useful stuff since then.

Now then, time to start putting something together...

Okay, aftering farting around and harassing the people over at the Temple of the Rogue forums for a little while, I've come to the conclusion that libtcod is just rude and I've decided not to bother with it any longer for the time being. I'm currently fiddling around with a little library someone over there recently released, called BearLibTerminal. It seems pretty nice and I've already got it working, so my impressions of it are good already.

Anyhow, thanks for putting up with my constant stream of dumb questions for the most part, and also sorry about that. I just recently noticed that there's a thread in the Creative Projects sub-forum specifically for "newb programming help"...so yeah. Sorry about that. XP

the program is looking for a file that's not there. Line 196 of src/console.cpp is the location in the code that triggered the problem, not the file that is missing. Compiling and linking went error-free. cpp files are only used in the compiling stage, they're never accessed by a running program.

It's pretty easy to narrow down what the problem probably is. What type of file is accessed during runtime by low-level library functions? DLLs are! Most likely you forgot to put the DLLs in the location you're running tuto.exe from.
Ah, good things to remember. However, I have all the .dll files I can find in the directory containing tuto.exe...I even threw in the gui related ones just in case, to no avail. Have any other ideas?

Spoiler: 7/52 (click to show/hide)

Okay, so I finished Deep Water about a week ago, but it was during a power outage (a seven day one, mind you) and I'm just getting around to reorienting myself now. Not too bad, though it got oddly sexual from time to time. Some cool ideas and story writing stuff in there.

I'm a little over 100 pages into the third book now, but I'm getting slowly tired of it. I sort of want to give it a rest and read something new, but I feel terrible about the idea of leaving the book unfinished...

I was having some weird trouble compiling a program using libtcod via console earlier (from a libtcod C++ roguelike tutorial) and I still can't get that code to work, however, after poking through some other tutorials and the like, I've been able to get another simple program to run both via console and codeblocks. I'm trying to figure out what my problem is with the original code.

This is what it looks like:
Code: [Select]
#include "libtcod.hpp"
int main() {
    TCODConsole::initRoot(80,50,"libtcod C++ tutorial",false);
    while ( !TCODConsole::isWindowClosed() ) {
        TCODSystem::checkForEvent(TCOD_EVENT_KEY_PRESS,NULL,NULL);
        TCODConsole::root->clear();
        TCODConsole::root->putChar(40,25,'@');
        TCODConsole::flush();
    }
    return 0;
}

As per the tutorial, I'm compiling it with this input:
g++ src/*.cpp -o tuto -Iinclude -Llib -ltcod-mingw -static-libgcc -static-libstdc++ -Wall        [Someone mind explaining what these commands actually do?]

I've set up the folders include and lib within the program's directory, containing the things they should contain. The code itself is stored as main.cpp within the src folder. Following some advice from the tutorial, I ran the code with a command line debugger (gdp, I think), which gives this output:
Code: [Select]
(gdb) r
Starting program: C:\Users\Soulusk\gameplace\tuto.exe
[New Thread 8900.0x14c8]
[New Thread 8900.0x888]
24 bits font.
key color : 0 0 0
character for ascii code 255 is colored
Using SDL renderer...

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
0x65e70d9f in TCODConsole::clear (this=0x1) at src/console.cpp:196
196     src/console.cpp: No such file or directory.

It seems, to my untrained eyes, that it can't find the file console.cpp, which is in libtcod's src folder (I checked). Anyone here actually know what my problem is and perhaps how I might go about solving it?

Spending my second day with electricity again, after an eight day power outage. I've had the joys of throwing out nasty smelling food with two different families! Horray!

So much precious food...
*cries*

Well, that was a long break. My programming studies were put on hold during an eight day power outage. The break from everything was nice, but a little disorienting...

On the numerical base topic, a lot of them might not be all that important to know, but I've always found them fun to study. It can be pretty insightful to learn about, in terms of our own base-10 system and the nature of numbers in general. How about decimals and fractions in other bases? Fun!

I'm running visual studio express with pdcurses for making a roguelike. It's not a bad option if you're on windows, it was extremely easy to set up.
Speaking of setting up libraries, is there any general method of knowing what to include where? I've been told to look for things in include folders and library folders, but of course pdcurses had neither of these (apparently pdcrs34dllw.zip has all the important files?). The include stuff seems to be needed for the compiler (.h/.hpp files) and the library stuff for the linker (.lib/.a files). There's also the case of the special .h files, like curses.h and libtcod.h, which are not included in these folders but still need to be recognized somewhere.

I think I was able to get libtcod set up (though it might not actually be working), but I haven't tried anything with pdcurses yet.

13
Well, as far as I can see, I'd like something to give me a good terminal or window, or whatever the proper name is, to run a roguelike in and an acceptable way to receive keyboard input in such a game. From there I'll see how far I can get on my own.

14
Okay, so before I get too far, I've got a few questions for whoever feels inclined to answer:
Is ncurses actually available for Windows?
How similar is pdcurses to ncurses? Would something explaining usage of ncurses being any use in learning the pdcurses library?

I've been poking around about using libraries, but I'm probably going to create inexplicable problems anyway, so stay tuned for billions of questions once I get started on that.

I feel kind of like an idiot now. Didn't realize I'd downloaded Code::Blocks on to this computer already. It also compiles properly.

So yeah, just going to leave that IDE stuff alone for now. Focus on easier to understand (and better documented) things, like pointers and libraries or something. I'll figure out how to do things in CodeBlocks later.
