DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Vampire lovers?

My guess? People don't anymore recognize that previously friendly historical figure is now evil bloodsucking creature.

So I start out as fortress guard in dwarf fortress, find a (something) Freak Bride, go to brag about my kill to the king and this ensues(note I don't remember exact quote)

Me: "I just killed Queen (night creature's name)"

King: *spits on me*

Sooooooo yeaaaaah <_< King kinda tried to kill me for killing his monsterious ex wife :P

After recruiting two of my fellow fortress guard, I moved north to attack a goblin fortress. I realized two things very quickly: that my companions will charge in like rabid dogs, even when I'm trying to sneak, and that they provide a great distraction.

After many battles, some horror movie levels of brutality (I get bored sometimes), and some sort of insurrection that happened while I was there, I am now waiting for three of the ten children I'm trying to herd in the general direction of home to stop sobbing on the floor so that maybe we can actually get them to safety. I really can't wait until they're traumatized enough to ignore the corpses I've been too lazy to hide.

i havent even worked out how to rescue children yet

1) Talk to prisoner

2) Ask them to come with you

3) Take them away from dark fortress. If you have to, use Z to wait until they catch up if they keep falling on ground crying

4) Take them to their parents

5) Watch them automatically starting tearful reunion scene.

Thats pretty much it

Though be careful to not rescue children with goblin names. Why? They are snatched from other goblin civilizations so returning them is pain plus if their parents are dead then you can't return them at all so all you can do is to keep them around as companions or cancel the rescue thing at random place

I neglected to check the cause of death of a worldgen reclaim fortress, and ran into something similar. Wall him in and forget about him, I guess. If he doesn't have a gas or spit attack, you can fortification some walls and make it into a shooting range.

"Lish Hatedfates the Nightma-" something

"An enormous feathered leech. It has wings and it is ravening. Its slate gray feathers are fluffed-out. Beware its poisonious bite!"

Yeah, its not really that frightening monster  :P If it is killed by military dwarves, can I still butcher its corpse for meat and parts?

]I'm picturing a dwarf opening the door while exploring a ruin, seeing a, shambling primeval horror from the deep, and just slowly closing the door while the creature stared at her with its equivalent of eyes, and nonchalantly telling everyone that the room is out of limits.

That is actually pretty much how the first encounter went. The forbidden beast didn't even move in the time it took for dwarf to enter the room and grab stockpile item.(I reclaimed this world gen fortress once already, but got killed by "vile force of darkness" elves since I hadn't prepared for early siege in first year)

I discovered that fact by accident in my current fortress, leading to a... erm... "diplomatic incident". I was attacked by a group of humans and i thought they was regular soldier of the human civ trying to backstab me (we found coins of that civ on one of them). I may or may not have slaughtered their next caravan in retaliation... who know ?

lol, I guess you forgot that civilization doesn't send caravans if they are hostile towards you  :P

Oh. Umm. Whelp this is... Weird

I didn't realize that previous historical figures who destroy fortress in world gen may remain in ruins <_< Or at least forbidden beasts do. I think its because they hide in one room and only way they are spotted if dwarfs go to that room

SO I guess I'm lucky that "Current Residents" don't move at all... I forbidden all doors to that room and now poisonous flying leech just stands there. Lucky that he didn't attack anyone. But yeah, no clue what to do with the leech, do I just wait till I have strong enough soldiers to kill it?

To be fair, in standard ASCII worldmap evil oceans look like dried up muddy pool floors too.

Yeah, but its easier to get used to that than looking at travel map and seeing floor on it

Honestly, you don't need to modify anything for easy mode. Only thing you need to do is to create pocked world with with minimum amount of civilizations and use the world that doesn't have goblins. Or alternatively, just embark on island without other civilizations. Wildlife in caves can be hard and megabeast can be dangerous, but megabeasts don't start attacking before you have population of 80(I think) and a lot of created wealth so either way you are safe until you have learned to keep your dwarves alive from starvation and thirst and wild life whether cavern or surface.

(I'm not sure about current version since nowadays civilizations can declare war on each other after world gen, but in previous version I had extremely easy time with small world where only humans, dwarfs and elves existed as nobody attacked me and two other races sent caravans once a year)

From adventure mode, jumps can only be two tiles in any direction.

Actuaaaallyy... It depends on what your speed is. If you sprint and get to speed 3.5(orwhatever) then you can jump wider and longer range, at cost of only being able to jump into direction your character is facing.

9
Aaaaand this is one reason to not use tilesets :P Cause same symbols are used for multiple different things so it can look very confusing when travel map town symbol is same as floor symbol

1) Talk to the guy who knows where the dragon is

2) Instead of picking option one from menu(Where is "insert dragon name here"?) pick option two (Where is "Insert name of cave where dragon is"?)

3) ???

4) Profit!

They should be hostile, but new version kinda broke that so most of enemies that are supposed to be hostile aren't in adventure mode.

The attackers are drawn from historical figures and since world is activated, sieges and ambushed no longer happen because of game deciding "Whelp, player has played enough, time to attack". So I guess either goblin civilization got conquered, goblin civilization is conquering someone else, all goblins died or they just decided to not attack your dwarf civilization or some reason  :P

(Most of time in my games my dwarf civilization starts out healthy, but since currently invaders always win after world gen, after few months all of my dwarf civilization fortresses besides my own are conquered by goblins so when I go to adventure mode afterwards I can't start out as fortress guard since fortresses no longer exist. Maybe I just have bad luck or something)

DF General Discussion / Re: Possum Demon Diety Diplomat
« on: July 21, 2014, 04:32:13 pm »
Anyway, humanoid historical figures demons do one of following things: Take over goblin civilization either by usurping previous leader(thats how you get lawgiver demons), take over goblin civiilzation by creating position of "Master", take over human civilization by pretending to be a deity(currently gods never appear in flesh, they only do things during history, so all deities you meet are actually demons) and sometimes, at least in older versions I'm not sure if it happens anymore, they sit around in a cave like semi megabeasts, night creatures, werecreatures, etc.

DF deity (noun): A deity who watches over a world as its inhabitants are brutally murdered, and laughs. The only thing they do for the world is curse people, causing more hues and bloodshed.

And make deals with giant humanoid demons to bring them to mortal world as evil overlords for reasons ranging from "Mwhahaa, evil!" to "This doesn't really make sense"

You can nowadays butcher everyone's corpses, but you still can't eat everything :P Like elves apparently can't eat wildlife(I think? I'm kinda confused) and dwarfs and humans can't eat sapients. Don't know about kobolds
