DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Glass upright spikes

I prefer static spikes, Mortal Kombat style, aesthetically.

I love the idea of glass spikes even if they aren't efficient.  A bit of beauty in the horrible death pits filled with rotting corpses and rusted armor.

What multiplying effect do spikes have on fall lethality, though?

Steel is better than iron is better than copper for axes and picks if used in combat.  When used to cut trees or tunnel, it doesn't matter if you're using copper a higher-end metal.

DF Gameplay Questions / Hang on a tick, is this normal now?
« on: March 17, 2012, 10:28:14 pm »
So I recently promoted my expedition leader's romantic interest to hammerer and sheriff (I figure nepotism is alive and well among the dorfs, plus I like the guy).  I've noticed he didn't turn noble purple and doesn't seem inclined to go fetch the hammer I have sitting about.  Is this normal now?  Do hammerers wait until a crime occurs to 'activate' and go fetch their head-squasher?  Do sheriff and hammerer perhaps not play well together?

Send in squads of sacrificial peasants and flank it with marksdorf squads once it moves to engage the sacrificial lambs.

Recruit the dwarf and seal him in a room for a year.

If he starves to death, he was innocent.

That law often follows the dominant ethical system should be blindingly obvious.

People seem to be confusing law and ethics here.  The reason that you don't fuck your sister isn't because there's a law against it, but because it violates your culture's ethical beliefs (leaving aside selection-based instinctual drives).  The reason dorfs don't take slaves isn't because the mountainhomes say so, it's because slavery is abhorrent to dorf culture and its understanding of right and wrong.  You can expect INTERNAL strife as well as external punishment if you decide to suddenly revise ethics as dorfs know it in your fort.

It wasn't.  Boatmurdered seriously predates 40d.

You may want to regen your world if you're encountering the metal-is-too-rare problem and set minerals to frequent or everywhere.  Me, I go for the former; I don't cotton to the less metal = more fun school of thought at all.

Last I checked, the clowns don't go out into the world, though if you come calling as a reclaim party/adventurer, they'll be about and more than happy to have fun with you.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they qualify as Forgotten Beasts.

DF Gameplay Questions / Picks as Weapons
« on: August 08, 2011, 11:59:12 pm »
The wiki mentions that picks are now reasonably decent weapons, and I've always kinda fancied an army of dorfs with picks instead of swords or axes.  Can these be set as military weapons, and if so, does it work or is it buggy?
