Not sure, but could this also be increasing the lag by a large quantity?  I'm assuming each splatter of blood increases the cpu load minutely, and while this isn't an issue under normal conditions, it can be when the blood is tracked all over and covers each body part of all animals and dwarves.

My fortress (and dwarves and puppies) are covered in splatters of blood.  However, the odd part is that it's been over a year (plus rainfall) and none of the blood splatters are dissolving.

Also, regarding the wind speculation:

The "ripples" seem to be going west to east (while the river is running east to west), and these lines also appear in lone standing ponds.  If anything, I wouldn't think the ponds would be churning so much so as to be as actively moving as the river.

I've got to be kidding?  Nah, Toady would never surprise me by being in-depth, even insanely so.  That's just his nature, and that's one of the reasons the current state and future of the game are so bright.

Toady:

I've heard speculation regarding the blood-river video, and now I'm curious myself: Has wind been implemented and if yes, are there any visual effects on the water's surface?  Seems like there were some occasional lines moving across the water.

Also, what's going to happen if a player rewalls the area in which the caravan spawns?  Will they not appear?  Will they appear elsewhere?  How about if they enclose the spawn areas on the edge of the map and set up rewalled flooding zones to kill any spawning creatures/sieges for massive profit?

Ooh! Also:

Is there any sort of update to statuses of dwarves (tiredness/thirst/etc.) and will any of these give a temporary modifier to statistics (e.g. I'd imagine that drinking a lot of dwarven wine would probably lower one's balance)?

Guilty as charged, yes I did play Asheron's Call.

Point being, I didn't so much expect the stats to be pulled over (as I noticed there were some holes and whatnot when writing the post) as I was more hoping that it would spur some discussion, which it did.

Anyway, Toady:

Are there going to be any synergies between statistics?  Will training a physical statistic simultaneously aid a mental one?  Are there going to be any innate characteristics/statistics of characters (aside from personality) that are relatively untrainable and can only possibly be changed from a major lifetime experience (e.g. near-death, family dies, have a child, etc)?

Here's a suggestion for stats...

Strength
Affects: Damage, Encumberance, Adjusted Hauling Speed
Trained by: Hauling, Sparring, etc.

Endurance
Affects: Health, Resistances, Stamina before tiring
Trained by: Becoming winded, overcoming wounds, living a healthy lifestyle (hunger/thirst/sleep)

Quickness
Affects: Movement Speed, Attack Speed, Task Speed
Trained by: Moving around, repetitive tasks, sparring

Coordination
Affects: Attack accuracy, Quality of Finished Goods/detailing, Long-range aim
Trained by: Sparring, detailing, making trade goods, decorating, target practice

Focus
Affects: Ability to act under stress/hunger/sleep deprivation, speed of learning skills, Quality of Finished Goods
Trained by: Working for extended periods of time, no idea

Willpower
Affects: Giving into pain, happiness/tantrums, etc.
Trained by: Suffering, being unhappy, learning

All of these would essentially be influenced by race/personality attributes.

How do you plan on dealing with larger animal sizes?  I'm sure you've already considered that whales could quite easily take up more than one tile.  Could you represent a bigger creature like this?:

4 tile whale:
W+
++

6 tile whale:
+W+
+++

9 tile whale:
+++
+W+
+++

This isn't to say that there would be all of these variants so much as to give you an idea of the scheme of increasing creature sizes.  This could also apply to other large creatures (e.g. dragons) which might not be able to fit down smaller passages in the mountain.  This in itself could give rise to many interesting situations, a dwarf escaping a marauding dragon by reaching a single-tile safety tunnel for example.
