I think my problem with it is that Intelligent Undead shouldn't necessarily be [opposed to life].

In narrative, there's a ton of instances where intelligent Undead actively try to either end their existence, or live in harmony with the living.

Think Adams Family, or Casper.

I'm not opposed to them living in hiding though, like Vampires or Demons do currently.

DF General Discussion / Re: Dwarven poetry (bad is the new good)

These descriptions are awesome. I love the comments on stanza, metre, syllabic counts, and the other technical poetic structure/form detail. It's impressive how varied the styles get. Generator has a surprising love of tercets and assonance. So many speak stanzas in the style the serpent.

"The ending of every line of the poem rhymes with every other." - Does this mean it's using an alternating rhyme scheme or more: ABCBDBEB etc?

The latter. Every line has the same ending Rhyme.

So who's the first to try the epic riddle poem?

" A poetic riddle intended to complain about a chosen subject, originating in The Seducer of Webs. The poem is divided into two distinct parts: five ten-line stanzas and seven to nine quatrains. Use of metaphor and vivid imagery is characteristic of the form.
The first part concerns the past. The tenth line of each stanza uses the same placement of allusions as the first line. It has lines with three feet with an accent pattern of stressed-unstressed-stressed (qualitative cretic trimeter). The ending of each line of this part rhymes with each other.
The second part concerns current events. Certain lines use the same placement of allusions. It has lines with three feet with an accent pattern of stressed-unstressed (qualitative trochaic trimeter). The ending of each line of this part rhymes with each other."

That's quite the riddle...

I'm picturing a rap about Kobolds stealing gold, by Urist McSlim Shady...

I'm almost tempted to give it a go. :)

I should also reiterate that we're not generating actual words for poems
Ha! I knew it will be like books, only even more descriptive.

What I like about this is that since poems tend to be shorter than books, we may see a lot of people putting up their topics from in-game with a fan created poem to match. Like a more advanced Mad-libs word game.

Other Games / Re: Risk of Rain giveaway 2!

I'm going to throw out 2. Not because they are my favorite per se, but because they are so memorable to me.

The first is the original Zelda. I watched my mom play and beat this game. She had even mapped out the whole world using several sheets of graph paper taped together (minus the lost forest ;) ).

The second is staying up all night and beating Sam and Max Hit the Road with my sister. Such a great game. One of the first games I ever bought that was on a CD as well.

I'll drop a few more into the thread over the weekend. Spread them out a little.

Could do another livestream today in a 2-3 hours? What you think?

I'd tune in. There aren't enough pirate games for me to skip out on following this. :)

Other Games / A few of the Humble WB Bundle items. First come first serve!
« on: November 12, 2013, 04:58:42 pm »
Awhile back I was going through some hard times, and some forum goers offered to gift me some games. I turned them down because I'm fine monetarily and others deserved them more.

I'd still like to repay that kindness by offering up some items from the Humble WB Bundle that I don't want or need. :)

As much as I love the game and aesthetic. I am horrible at it.

The one time I was doing good I had to save out real quick (while grappling to the boat) to take care of my kids. Loaded up, grapple was gone, captain drowned. XD

I think there's got to be a little more to the relative merits of gaming vs reading. One is more involving, but the other requires a calmer state of mind.

Jocan - ouch :( You're free to take any of the other games on here if you so wish, of course!

Keshire: I can't really imagine what that must be like... but I hope that it isn't a nasty breakup. Either way, feel free to take something!

I'm good, but thank you anyway. I have a minecraft server setup for myself and my kids. That's the ultimate time waster. All I'm missing are cheap headsets for voice chat when my kids are with their mother.

Just wanted to share my thoughts mostly, and let people know they aren't alone. ;D

I know how hard time can be for some, im currently in a bad position myself and i have to scrounge up here and there to feed my familly, sometime i just like to dwelve in a game and have a moment where i dont have to worry about anything, an escape of some sort. These games were all sitting and collecting dust anyway so why not give them away to ppl who are in the same boat as me. This community gave me some games in the past ( Thanks to hemmingjay mainly and some others whose name has been forgotten sadly ). It is my turn to give to the community as a thank you.

I hope these game will find a new owner and bring some peace and calm to those in high stress situation.

P.S.: Just a sidenote, when i was lot younger a shrink once told me that is wasnt sane to escape reality in games, he told me to read instead and meditate, think about how to fix the problem. But want to hear my point of view? I say screw them, when you spend hours/days/week trying to fix a problem caused by unforseen forces ( economic crash ), thats quite out of your reach. Go on my friend, get some good time, and instead of reading a story, make your own in a game but please, stay focused on real life too because in the end only you can push it hard enough to get out of the dark days.

I kind of think it's funny that the shrink gave you alternative escapism options. Books are the same as games in the general sense.

Other than that, ya. I'm separated from my wife, and it's looking like it's going to turn into divorce eventually. It's nice to have something to take my mind off the grind of everyday living.

DF Suggestions / Re: Magic/Enchanted Wood
« on: December 28, 2012, 10:04:49 pm »
I saw this topic, and realized I had never heard a suggestion about the topic I thought it was about! I was pleased.

Then I read the topic.

Not that this is bad, but it doesn't go far enough.

Here's how I think it should be handled:
"Enchanted Wood" should be an additional material defined in each type of tree, with a tag in the wood material proper identifying that the elves use the Enchanted Wood instead of the normal one (e.g, HARMLESS_EXTRACT:LOCAL_PLANT_MAT:WOOD_MAGIC or something). This enchanted wood would have other useful properties, such as enhanced sharpness and such, which makes elven weaponry not suck.
Brings to mind this:

Difference being that there's a justification. Unless there was in that comic, in which case the difference is, um...Hey look over there, a squirrel!

It was all elven made. ;)
Including the wooden skin graft. If it helps, the guy's name was goblin slayer, though he was a jerk.
