Just thought I'd say that I am looking forward to what may come with Soundsense in the new DF version.  I've been using Soundsense for years - never really bothered to stop by and say it, but I really could not (and would not) play Dwarf Fortress without it, so thanks a million for all you've done.

I was really really really hoping for more sieges.  Honestly, they are such a big part of the fun of this game - was the "path" system really necessary?   I dont need *that* much realism :/

Renamed short skirts to plain skirts, they are now common.

But.. but.. that ruins everything!

Is there something special you have to do to get the magmaling/waterling reactions to show up in the alchemist?  I have magma discovered... were they moved from there or something?  The manual says I should be able to do it there, but the only gem reaction i'm seeing is to create metal from bones of armok.  Sucks cuz I was counting on it for lava this time :(

Secondly, I noticed this before like a year ago, and since picking DF back up I was surprised to see it happening again - I thought it was some sort of one-off bug, but apparently not.  2 times I've started fortresses with an Earthkin dwarf.  Both times he starts out fine, but after a few years he slows down so much that he can hardly move.  Tried training with workbench to get his str up to no avail - seems to be an issue with the rockskin buff they are constantly recasting on themselves not expiring or something like that?

I'd strongly recommend using SoundSense if nothing else - being able to hear when your dwarves are fighting is a godsend, if for no other reason.

Could be.  I was under the impression Pyromancers were immune to fire, though - this guy dies almost every time. Thankfully, too - when he doesn't, he proceeds to blast fire all over the inside of my fort (no enemies there either) and kill everyone (which is what happened the first time.)  I'm not sure what the game counts as "startling" but this seems a bit excessive for being unlucky enough to get this migrant, no matter how good of a fighter he may be.. considering I can't find a way to get him to live 10 seconds into the map without using DFhack to dump water everywhere, and then, as I said, he just blows up everything inside.

Oh well.  Can't say I would ever consider creating a pyromancer after this, but life goes on.  Thanks for the answers.

I see.. there are no creatures to startle him though, he just explodes as soon as he comes on the map.

It just says arcane dwarf, didn't realize thats what they are called.   Thanks, and though I know I said it last time.. One more quickie: despite how rare I can now see they are supposed to be, I "lucked" into a pyromancer migrant.  I didn't realize he was one, actually, until the first time he showed up and burned down my entire fort;  savescumming it, he comes into the map and immediately blows fire everywhere, despite there being no enemies in sight, killing himself (and pretty much everyone else) every time in the process.  I presume this isn't supposed to happen - both the fort-destroying and the fact that he kills himself with his fire-wave-thing?  Pretty funny, though.   I have the save right before it happens if you want to see it.

Edit:  I can't tell if he's blowing fire or something, or just exploding... it kinda goes everywhere.  As an additional bit of amusement, his wife comes in right after, and if she survives she is very unhappy at losing a spouse to tragedy recently, witnessing their death.. due to spontaneous combustion xD

Thanks a lot, Meph!  One more quick question, I am familiar with the arcane dwarves, firekins, wavekins, etc.  In my latest fort I got a "sorcerer" (should be sorceror) dwarf.. is that a new type or something?  He's also high in the Magic Weapon User skill, which I've never seen before.  Dont see anything regarding this caste in the manual, so thought I'd ask.

So, a while ago I edited my Masterwork raws to bump up the percentage of naturally magic dwarves, just for flavor.  I like starting with an Earth or Waterkin, just to give my military leader that extra something.  However, that was a loong time ago, and I would like to do the same thing now, and am having a lot of trouble recalling exactly how I managed it.  Could someone point me in the right direction?

IMO a better solution than digging invaders would be enemies that could disarm traps - orc/goblin mechanics, as it were.  After all, in most fantasy settings they are the "techy" steampunk races.  It would be cool if once the knew there were traps, they could try to disarm them, which would of course take time, and you could try to cover with marksdwarves and so on.. and it wouldn't be nearly as game-breaking as digging invaders.

DF General Discussion / Re: How "Old" could you have made DF??
« on: January 28, 2014, 04:41:06 am »
Well, Trickman, you are right in most cases, but there are some exceptions (mostly to do with different specs from the same time period). My macbook runs DF better than my friend's new gaming rig, because it's a dual core with more clock speed instead of a quad core. Although it's a complicated system with many other factors, it is an interesting anomaly.
(Yeah, I like the durability of macbooks, I don't use it for gaming besides DF.)

My Macbook runs DF like absolute garbage, compared to my gaming PC.. even the loadscreens take a zillion times longer.

Maybe not quite a zillion, but it is definitely noticable.

More like a swarm of them, yeah, due to the respawing-and-instantly-dying-random dwarf thing I mentioned in the other thread - I stopped building coffins cuz it was getting annoying to keep up with, just dumping their skeletons in my lava pit now.  Weird - after years of DF, never realized a ghost could actually kill before.  Thanks.
