Bu.. Bu.. Netbook can DF? How often do you die due to FPS Death?

i play df almost exclusively on a (3y old) netbook. with a little adjustments and tweaks you can manage a 20 year old fort with 120 dwarves at 15-20 fps. it's too slow for megaprojects, i admit, but it's enough for normal play and you can play without haste. (of course, when 200 gobbos show up it goes down to 3 fps)

on topic: as many have said already: having only a simple ascii representation gives the ability to a) quickly see what is going on, b) zoom out a lot and still see what is going on and c) imagine what the things look like that are going on.

i always considered playing df to be like reading a randomly generated interactive fantasy book. i wouldn't want to play it any different.

while the checkerboard method surely is more dwarfy i found it much easier to lure them somewhere for marksdwarves behind fortifications to shoot them. and after they killed 20 of the clowns you get bored and collapse a portion of the mountain above the rest of them.

well i think that is covered. at first glimpse i saw a lot of goblin towers, dark goblin fortresses and dark dwarven fortresses. in fact, the entire west part of the map is essentially "dark" save one small elven retreat (thehehe). and on the east there is "the fabulous island" :)

14. if you have an entrance prepared for goblins (weapon traps), zombies (atomsmashing bridges) and titans (cavein-trap) you are NOT prepared for elves because if you manage to get them to attack you, they know about your traps and attack en masse on giant flying bridge-destroying mounts.

i too think that legends should stay legends.
like michael schumacher. he could have quit racing as a legend, but chose to come back and race again. now he's lame.

there are a number of sandbox-games with world-shaping and tunnelbuilding ability now. the most prominent one i can think of is dungeon keeper. but i don't think that anyone can hack something as feature-rich as df in less time than toady just because he is a minecraft-fan.

i mean, the diggable local area and some worker bees are but a fraction of what df offers...

I'd go with around 110.
10 miners and 10 masons (for the start, they can be repurposed later), 5 carpenters and 5 woodworkers, 5-10 good grower, 2 cooks and 2 brewers, 10 alround-smiths, 10 clothier/weavers, 20 military and the rest (medical team, nobles, haulers)
edit: forgot about 5 mechanics

what i did was prepare a big cavein-trap (v2) near the 4x4 shaft, breached it, lured the demons in and then got 120 birds with one stone. one survived but could be slewn by the axedwarves. then i sealed the spire jsut above hell and started mining.

edit: what actually happened was i wanted to lure them there to kill them with archers (archers being the bait in this case) which worked well until they ran out of ammo. then i got bored and dug the cavein-trap above the demons
