Oh. So suicide, basically?

Well, I wasn't ever able to hit myself. I guess knowing exactly where the blow was coming from is pretty helpful in dodging it

No, he was me.

By "I came back" I meant I chose to play as him from the start adventuring menu, and it gave me the option to attack myself. He also resisted my movements and ran around by himself if I pressed . .

So I retired an adventurer, came back and found that he was now sentient and apposed to my actions.

I decided to teach him a lesson, but the bastard was very good at dodging.

A book called "Glad Trees" which is a two page poem written by a necromancer and not, as I suspected, a painting manual.

As expected. My complaints are confined entirely to in-character, I personally enjoy seeing Noface and company turn their enemies into paste.

This is a dog leather-bound book, entitled "The Eventual Death of MrCat." The book is entirely handwritten, and consists of a (note to self to insert page number here pending completion) page journal, authored by MrCat. It is a chronological account of the life of the militia dwarf MrCat. The writing is rambling yet it is of questionable quality.

22 Limestone, 16
I arrived at Silverysects two days ago and immediately joined the militia. Since this is the first fortress to actually be created (Armok only knows how the other ones got there, considering no one remembers building them in the first place) I figured the place would be awash in new and exciting ways to be horribly murdered. However, I was soon informed that the entirety of the actual fighting (if not necessarily the dying) was done by 7 legendary dwarfs referred to as "The Founders." My fellow militia regaled me with tales of the Founders making their way across vast tracts of land, killing everything in their path, before arriving here and doing much the same. Of particular note is the dwarf "Noface," who is said to wield two picks into battle, in the same hand, to great effect. This is elf shit. I come to the very first fortress, expecting to die awash in the blood of my friends and hated enemies, only to find that all of the enemies will be long dead by the time I haul my ass out of bed and I probably won't make any friends in the first place. Perhaps a kobold will sneak past the line and stab me in the face or something. At least then I might earn a place on one of the walls.

This is a drawing of a dwarf in ink. The dwarf is surrounded by dwarfs. This drawing relates to the appointment of the dwarf 'MrCat' to the Silverysects militia in the year 16.

(also, could the next overseer post a screenshot of my dwarf if it isn't too much trouble?)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Ascii is beautiful!

I personally prefer ASCII, although possibly as I learned in ASCII before even becoming aware of tilesets. Now tilesets just confuse me, and i know the ASCII instinctively.

Same here, I started DF in adventure mode, learned the ASCII, screwed around killing megabeasts for a while, then eventually figured out fortress mode. I tried a couple tilesets, and while I can comprehend them fairly easily I still prefer the ASCII.

Very good read, I'd like to be put in as a militia member and get horribly slaughtered by a goblin ambush.

I had a somewhat similar situation to Beast Tamer, with dust clouds bringing lifeless husks of sadness and death-huggles. A few stray kittens had been killed as result of a goblin ambush, and I had (stupidly) left them outside to rot. When they were not all that surprisingly turned into carnage machines (about 7 in total, I think) I holed up in my fortress, which had no competent military force at the time, and left a poor miller outside to die. I then watched in a mixture of wonder and horror as the undead kittens proceeded to kill him in the slowest way physically possible, chasing him all over the map and bruising all sorts of things. He was finally ended when he dodged into a pool of stagnant water and drowned.

The other day I was thinking about how the trading caravans always arrive at the same time (due mostly because my civilization was located across the world from me), and the obvious question came to my mind. Will the distance from your (or any) civilization to your fort ever effect how long it takes for a caravan to reach you? For example, instead of always arriving at the same time every year perhaps it would arrive at the same time every 2 years, or 1.3 years, and so forth.

DF Suggestions / Re: Bow effectiveness is affected by material

Fair point, Escapism, and I apologise. My excuse is my lack of sleep, although even then I should have shown better manners. But, in any case, I think the argument about how flexible adamantine is should be left for another thread, except perhaps to speculate on how it would effect (cross)bows.

The children have become aware that they are going to spend their whole lives in this hellhole, and are trying to off themselves before a carp does it for them.

Why do beekeepers come to a fortress that is dug into a glacier?

I was imagining dwarves attempting to eat while listening to the sounds of elephants having sex, giving birth, then waiting fearfully for the next barely-formed foal to fall into the dining room.

Probably just a glitch in the fortress. I'd just forget it and move on, but you could log it in the bugtracker if you wish.
