DF Modding / Modding Healing and other Health issues
« on: September 05, 2012, 09:22:36 am »
So I've come to know that nails can stay infected for all eternity and that infections don't really heal, nor does nervous damage.

Alas, I interested to know how mod the raws in order to cull these issues. Additionally, are there any other issues that I should be aware of that I could handle at the same time?

Basic information on infection:

When a dwarf is wounded their base chance of infection is based on a basic "dirtiness" number for each dwarf. This number decreases whenever the dwarf cleans themselves, especially if they clean themselves with soap and water. This base chance is then modified by whether or not the wound is cleaned, and if soap is used. The order of greatest chance of being infected to least is: (no cleaning)>(cleaning with water)>(cleaning with soap and water).

As for how the wound functions, you can think of an infection as basically working like a very slowly bleeding wound. If a dwarf is infected for long enough they will eventually turn "Pale" before "succumbing to the infection". The larger the wound is and the more infected wounds a dwarf has, the faster they will bleed out and succumb. However if the dwarf is healthy, tough, and the wound is small, it is possible for the dwarf to go years before death, or even possibly last indefinitely with an infected wound. Each infected wound also has a very small chance of healing at any given time, with the chance being based on the toughness and recuperative ability of the dwarf. If a body part does not heal then an infected wound in that part will never heal either.

This is very interesting information. Any suggestion on how to get dwarves to clean themselves up more?

The answer here, of course, is to simply make everything that is pink in the game blue.

[LMAGENTA_R:0]
[LMAGENTA_G:0]
[LMAGENTA_B:255]

In the colors.txt file in data/init.

A very interesting suggestion.. so this would change everything that is pink to that color? Like.. uum.. pigs?

Picks are nice even if you don't quick-train the skill by digging up stairs and then removing those up stairs. Good edged attack, no blunt attack. Probably the best weapon to make from adamantine, and if you really want a backup blunt attack dwarves will throw in punching, kicking, and shield bashing.

I wonder what the combat numbers are for shields. I've seen leather shields with a couple of kills on them, but leather maces aren't in the game so any comparisons would need to be specifically set up. Maybe you could mod leather to be a weapon material just long enough to make some? It works for lead and bolts, but those two materials are handled in slightly different ways.

So actually, a pick and shield equiped guys actually has all the types of attacks?

What's wrong with pink?  Real dwarves wear pink.  It's the color of blood mixed with grizzly bear bile.  Only the ammer dwarves are hardcore enough to drench themselves in it.

That über-bright flashing pink thing is one of the ugliest things in DF. The contrast difference to all the other darker tones is just headbursting :D

I just mod my raws to add a heal rate to nails, I just copy the heal rate of bones or cartilage, problem solved, you don't even need to regen.

I probably should do this too. Any other suggestions on what to tamper with relating to healing now that I'm at it, not game breaking though.

After running around with this boots issue, there are two ways with which my dwarves equip boots with sock/shoes:
 1) Don't replace clothing
 2) Assign two Boots

So.. got a bunch of guys in the hostipal after last siege and most of them have infection in various locations, despite having soap and clean water around.

Anyways, I'm not particularly aware how the infection actually work, have somebody made any science on this?

Of course, miners are also really strong and tough from mining, so that helps.

I was under the impression that only military training currently increases stats?

Sounds all good.

So bacically I could go on just with axe and spear dwarves?

Yes, with 2 caveats:
1) Some ranged support is useful
2) Mining picks are worth consideration as very powerful general purpose weapons

Aye, I've got two full squads of good marksdwarves and figured I'd go for an extra four full squads of melee dwarves. There just is something .. deeply addicting in melee carnage.

But.. picks eh? Sounds pretty good! How do those picks compare to other weapons and what color do they change your dwarves to? Do they stay grey?

Pick compared fairly well last time I used it in 31., not too disimilar from combined axe and spear. I doubt material system's changed too much in 34. and I've not really looked to see what color they turned, probably same one as wrestler since pick is a misc weapon that uses mining skill.

The pick idea is very nice indeed, I kinda like the grey color of recruits so if they stay grey that would be awesome. I also very much like the idea of miner warriors, though isn't there somesort of conflict with miners in military?

Other than that, I'll probably go for the maces dwarves just because the red color is just so much more human to look at, as there apparently ain't much difference in there.

Am I the only one who dislikes that pink color of hammerdwarves? Also, anybody have trouble actually seeing axedwarves due to the dark blue color?

Aight, apparently I can't put socks nor shoes on, in order to get those high-boots going.

Used to have that issue in 31., haven't checked if they does in 34., I think the issue was there not being enough boots when they get ordered to put it on or having sock in uniform ( they tend to put two socks on one foot and boot can't fit for some reason ). No idea if the latter issue's been fixed, yet, since I'm playing 34.09 and haven't tried to put sock in uniform.

Set your uniforms to "replace clothing" instead of "wear over clothing" and it will probably sort itself out.

Well apparently, despite removing the socks and having the uniform in "replace clothing", the one boot issue persists.

So I don't really like that pink color of hammer lords.. so I figured I'd use mace dwarves instead.

But I was wondering how do they compare?

It must be this. I've got leather socks on everybody so I'll check for this. Thank you.
