The new custom workshops seem like they could hold a great deal of potential. Since you can choose what skill is trained it could be possible to set up "training dummies" by creating a custom workshop that would require certain materials, rock, wood, corpses, and train their weapon skills.

Build a device that will flood the entire fort if a another floodgate is opened. Very easy to keep him from touching the stuff. Put it all into a room and put a drawbridge over the only entrance.  Put a lever near the floodgate and attach it to the drawbridge. Pull the lever and the drawbridge closes. Then when he looks at what you have done is build a way to destroy the fort by pulling a lever. He will never touch that lever. And thus your goodies are safe.

I'm in university so my summer started in April. I decided to go across the country to a new city to go back to university to take more courses. I traveled 3000km to take Introduction to Quantum physics. The climate change from Ottawa to Victoria was just a bonus, had nothing to do with my decision, nothing at all.

There was a thread about using trees to hold back the magma since ballista arrows can go through trees but magma won't.

No you cannot import sand. There is a way of using water on rock underground that can produce sand though.

Hauling an item pays 1@. That is why haulers are so poor. They spend a week hauling some stone from the greatest recesses of the earth to the masons workshops just to watch the mason spend 30 minutes turning it into a no quality table and earning 10 times more then they did.

4x4 map, 180 dwarves, most animals caged (most pets free), temp and weather off, GFPS set to 5, Cave river running.
4GB RAM, Duo 2.8 Intel Processor

10-15 FPS

I don't know what Lexender is doing but I think I'm going to steal his computer.

I've set up a fort in a scorching area before and constructed* a room room then surrounded, above and below, it with magma. All these added together were unable to harm my dwarves.

*The constructions were outside so although the room was inside it was still scorching.

Now that's simply silly. The trees will burn, magma pours onto your ballista, your ballista burns, your dwarf burns, Everything goes to hell in a handbasket.

Magma cannot enter a tile occupied by a tree. Also It cannot burn the trees that it is around.

I don;t have a pic from that time but at one point my fort of about 180 dwarves had 96 children. Production was slow.
