DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Face Palm moments you had
« on: April 10, 2014, 11:48:35 pm »
Learning the basics of modding on a fort-in-progress. Spent about 45 minutes trying to figure out why the bullets would just pass right through their target Changed everything I could think of, including giving them identical parameters to a normal crossbow bolt. Watched one of my test dwarves run up to his target after running out of ammo, where his rifle butts "passed right through".

Turns out I forgot to define what material the bullets and rifles were made of. So they technically didn't exist. *facepalm*

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: April 10, 2014, 11:40:43 pm »
My most recent fort, started after a several month hiatus, is falling to its end.

The last eight in-game years have been relatively quiet, with no invaders save a siege consisting of two waves of hammergoblins and a random dragon stopping by. My military, although small, has proven exceptionally effective, given that it's two spearmasters, two elite marksdwarves, and two "blowgunners" using modded blowguns (rifles). As a precaution I've got three more full squads training up, and they're shaping up promisingly.

A vile force of darkness has arrived!

Okay, let's see what they've brought. Okay, a bunch of swordsgoblins and hammergoblins. Easy. And... Wait. War Cave Dragons? Twelve of them? Uh oh. And what are these "voracious cave crawlers?"

After a long and bloody fight, my 170some dwarf population is down to 36. the only remaining member of my original military is the captain of the guard, who shot around 280 bullets throughout the entire fight in the main entrance. Of the surviving dwarves, 10 are unwounded adults and 6 are children. I don't think I can pull this one back.

And, as I've learned today, if you mod in an item but forget to define what material it's made of, it has no weight. And when you melee attack with a rifle that weighs nothing, it passes through things.

Couldn't figure out why my dwarves weren't using the minecarts I designed my fortress layout to have to move things. Turns out I forgot to set what the minecarts actually moved.

Jeez, my turn again already? That was fast. I don't think I'm going to have much time this week to play, so you should probably move me down on the list (since I'd still like another shot at the fort).

5
I'd say that's a fair decision. Done and done.

6
This squad has 4 "Military" members in it, but none of them have... really any skill. This squad is definitely getting disbanded (or at least having all of the members expunged).

They're training in Lasher and Knife User, since I've noticed both tend to be pretty deadly. The game doesn't recognize those as military skills.

Also, just put all the millstones in the king's tomb. It's what I was doing.

7
I'm not exactly pleased with the idea of danger rooms. We already have some legendary military, let the rest train up regularly.

8
If you don't mind, I'll take a miner. Name Manze, title Digger of Holes.

A dwarf, one of our mechanics-turned-cooks, came up to me today, saying he'd like to crosstrain in swordfighting and mechanics. I told him to join the Captain of the Guard's squad, since he's training half the year and the other half is spent doing whatever he pleases.

Oh hey, the traders are finally leaving. Took them long enough.

Spring is here! Guess that means it's someone else's turn to control this place. Here's a look at things at the end of the year.

And turn's done. The legendary military was certainly a pleasant surprise, but other than that there wasn't exactly much to do.

Notes:

 - The outer wall isn't done. Up behind the king's tower is where it stops right now. There's a stockpile in the wagonpath that takes gold bars and rock blocks for construction.
 - Bedrooms, as always, need furnishing. Doors, cabinets, coffers, and beds are all needed.
 - Keep an eye on trade goods production. Since there are three different stone stockpiles, sometimes they run out. There are a couple of small stone mines dug out along the staircase - one in marble and one in diorite.
 - There's a giant empty bedroom and a giant empty tomb. Both were meant for the King, but then I gave him his tower. They're fair game.
 - Squad A is set to patrol the outer boundaries of the fort for the last four months of the year. Keep that in mind.

Sign me up for another turn, please. This fort is fun.

Hey now, I didn't murder him. He was dead before my turn started. The_Force even clearly stated "1 insane baroness". >.>

Well, after the human "army" was killed, I noticed they had some nice iron armour. Except it's too big. Oh well, I'm sure our furnace operators will be glad to have some iron to play with.

After stripping the Goblin general naked, I had him dragged to the artifact cage in the dining hall. Now we can all laugh at him!

Oh goody. Another kid is taken by some sort of strange mood.

He grabbed a Craftsdwarf workshop. So surprising. No really, I'm completely surprised. Can't you tell?

...Uh oh. He wants a ton of things, including shells. Which I think we're out of. And the river's dry. This isn't good.

The traders refuse to leave. I don't know why.

That poor kid never did get his shells. Never seen anyone that sad before.

I decided to take the profiles of all the named dwarves. These were all done with two months left on my turn, so the stats may have changed slightly.

I've got 5 days left before the end of Obsidian on the save. I was planning on keeping it until either tomorrow, or whenever Firsal says what kind of dwarf he wants. Either way, my turn's almost done.

12
Yeah, sure, and if you post what you want now, I can probably even do it before the end of my turn.

13
Oh, there's already a tower. A fantastic one. The king lives in it.

14
I've never had much sccess melting things down, but heck, I'll see what I can do.

Journal of Manze, Digger of Holes

Well, that farmer finished what he was making. It's one heck of a coffin. Guess the king gets a new coffin. Oh, or not. His tomb is already Royal. Guess I get a new coffin!

Miners were complaining about lack of work, so I told them to dig out another column of tombs. That'll shut them up.

I've ordered the production of a bunch of stone blocks. Our surface presence could use some extensions. Unfortunately, I've only got 4 months left of my rule, so I don't know how that'll go.

I've ordered our marksdwarves and our Legendary champions to patrol the surface while we start construction of a wall. That'll ease my mind for sure. They're on patrol for the next 4 months.

...Er. What?

Oh. Humans. I was wondering where their caravan was. Huh. I guess one of the other overseers pissed them off. God damnit guys. Okay.

...They brought one squad of hammermen with one lasher leading them. I'm pretty sure first squad can kill them by themselves.

Joeclark and HARD2 quickly got into position, supported by two marksdwarves. Then they all charged.

That was ridiculous. The lasher and horse escaped with two hammermen. HARD2 and joeclark killed everyone else.

The traders are sitting in the depot, and The_Force is being a lazy bum and getting drunk instead of trading. Sigh.

He finished getting drunk, then grabbed some food. Fuck it, someone else can trade this time.

Since the broker wasn't there to keep track of it [[read as: I was too lazy to screenshot it]], I don't have any hard copies of what was traded, but we got a ton of gems, food, drink, and some steel armour for about a billion crafts.

since we had some spare adamantine laying around unused, I told joeclark to go make himself a spear out of it. I think he may have threatened a metalworker until he did it. Oh well. He's already got a masterwork adamantine shield, made to fulfill one of the king's ridiculous mandates. Hmm, I think I know what to do with those millstones now.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's the end of Moonstone, so I've got two months left. This fort really is kind of slow. It doesn't help that the workshops are so far from the surface, though.
There seems to be two good ways to work on forts: You can either do everything near the surface, and pump magma up, or you can do everything near the magma sea, and not have anything at the surface. Problem being that at this point, half is near the surface, and half is down low. and I really don't want to try and fix that.
Wow...so did you bury me in my tomb or did you just give that away too?
Nah, I let him deal without a tomb. He likes shields and millstones, which is a slight issue, because we lack weaponsgrade materials. We also have about a dozen millstones now.
